The Soccernostalgia Interview-Part 11 (Interview with Spanish Futbol Historian Mr. Josele Carbonell on the Ladisla Kubala era as Spain National Team Manager, starting with the 1969/70 season)

For this interview, I start a new project as I look back at the Spain national tem history under Ladislao Kubala, season by season, starting with the 1969/70 season.

This will be a semi-regular and continuous series.

The Interviewee is:

1-Spanish Futbol Historian Mr. Josele Carbonell

Mr. Carbonell’s contact info:

On Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/josele.carbonell.3

Soccernostalgia Question: How was the decision taken to appoint Kubala as National Team Manager. Was it the failure to qualify for the 1970 World Cup?

Mr. Josele Carbonell Response: (English Translation: The main supporter for the hiring of Mr. Kubala for the National Team in June 1969 once the official season was over, was José Luis Costa, president of the FEF at that time. Despite the many detractors he had in the Federation itself and in the upper echelons of the Spanish Sports Department.

With his signing, it was hoped to give the national team the doctrine and the way of understanding the football of Mr. Kubala, creating an absolute harmony and illusion for the players to join the selection.)

Soccernostalgia Question: As a former Barcelona man was there ever a resistance from the Real Madrid hierarchy and players against his appointment?

Mr. Josele Carbonell Response: (English Translation:
I do not think so at all. The national team alienated up to seven Real Madrid players in one of their matches throughout their time in the national team. For the first call against Finland, called four meringues players, all of them in the national team: Pirri, Velázquez, Amancio and Gento.)(Original Response in Spanish: No lo creo en absoluto.

Soccernostalgia Question: His first match in charge was an inconsequential World Cup qualifier vs. Finland at La Line de la Concepcion. Kubala handed International debuts to five players: Reina, Gatzelu, Quino, Barracina and Pujol. What do you think of this debut match and the new players?

Mr. Josele Carbonell Response: (English Translation: * Initially he called more potential rookies: Igartua, Clemente and Rojo from Athletic, but their coach Ronnie Allen refused to send them to the coach. The Federation made an exit on this issue.

* Those Sundays of Glory 193-1976 (VVAA by Marca Editorial)

Of the 22 that the previous selection trio (Artigas-Molowny-Muñoz) had called up, only 10 remained: Sadurni, Iribar, Ballester, Zabalza, Glaria IV, Rexach, Asensi, Velázquez, Amancio and Eladio.

Reina: Mr. Kubala considered that the reserve goalkeeper of FC Barcelona was better than the starters of the other First and Second teams. Except made of Iribar.

Gaztelu: Substitute for Martin II in said demarcation in the last three matches for Spain.

Quino: One of the four Second Division players called by Mr. Kubala. Selected for his scoring skills at Betis.

Barrachina: Step to the youth in the demarcation that Tonono and Gallego used to occupy.

Puyol: He had an excellent performance on matchday four of the League and Mr. Kubala had planned to replace him with Gento on the left wing in the second half of the game against the Finns.

Soccernostalgia Question: In this match vs. Finland, Kubala also selected Paco Gento in his last International Match. Was his selection a symbolic gesture or did Kubala plan on selecting him in the future?

Mr. Josele Carbonell Response: (English Translation: With 36 years and 43 international matches in his history, Gento was three games away from the Spanish international record holder: Zamora. Gento and Mr. Kubala met again in the Selection; one as coach the other, still, as a player. They had alienated together 13 times: against England (Madrid, May 15, 1955), Holland (Madrid, January 30, 1957), Switzerland (Madrid, March 10, 1957), Scotland (Glasgow, May 8, 1957). 1957), Scotland (Madrid, May 20, 1957), Turkey (Madrid, November 6, 1957), Switzerland (Lausanne, November 24, 1957), Turkey (Madrid, November 6, 1957), Portugal (Madrid, April 13, 1958), Ireland (Madrid, October 15, 1958), Italy (Rome, February 28, 1959), Poland (Madrid, October 14, 1959), France (Paris, December 17, 1959) and France (Madrid, April 2, 1961).

Félix Martialay: A history of the Spanish soccer team. 1969-70 season

Personally, I think it was a tribute to the career of the Cantabrian player, what happens is that neither the rival nor the stage were conducive to this event. A Santiago Bernabéu filled to the brim against a rival like Italy or Germany would have been more conducive to this fantastic winger so little considered in the football of his time.

Soccernostalgia Question: The new year started with an important friendly vs. West Germany at Sevilla. Spain won (2-0) with Arieta scoring twice. It was an important win against a strong team. What are thoughts about this game?

Mr. Josele Carbonell Response: (English Translation: Mr. Kubala has always been known as the champion of friendly matches. Undoubtedly, having won the World runner-up (1966) was a great achievement and an important springboard for the future career of the Hungarian coach in the National Team.

The Seville public was sensational in its drive, enthusiasm and shouts of encouragement towards our people. The player Lora, perhaps as a free concession to the Sevillians, had a phenomenal meeting. Germany, though full

of figures, came without Beckenbauer or Overath.

Soccernostalgia Question: In this match vs. West Germany, Kubala once more handed International debuts five players: Sol, Melo, Costas, Lora and Arieta. Arieta justified his debut with a double, what are your thoughts on the other debutants?

Mr. Josele Carbonell Response: (English Translation: As I have said before, Lora is thanks to Mr. Kubala for playing in Seville. The rest were defensive players that the coach believed were optimal to establish a very tough marking to the dangerous German forwards. One of Mr. Kubala's qualities was knowing the players a lot, since he not only saw them in league games, but he even attended the team's training sessions where they played and on some occasions he trained with them.

Soccernostalgia Question: Just ten days later at Madrid, Spain hosted another strong opponent Italy. After falling behind (0-2), Spain came back to tie the match (2-2), in a match remembered in Italy for Salvadore’s own goal and deflection. What was the rpess and public’s view of this match?

Mr. Josele Carbonell Response: (English Translation: Spanish fans expected a lot from their national team after the victory against Germany. The four goals were produced by two separate defensive errors in both the Spanish and the transalpine area. With a 0-2 the game seemed doomed but ours cornered the Italians in their area and with more enthusiasm than order the equalizer was achieved despite the ease and skill of the Italians in defending themselves (catenaccio). In the second half, Spain played better than Italy, but they lacked success in the shot and the scoreboard no longer moved.

Soccernostalgia Question: The first season of Kubala at the helm ended with an away win vs. Switzerland (1-0). Eladio and Grosso played their Final matches for Spain. What are your thoughts on this match?

Mr. Josele Carbonell Response: (English Translation: About the game itself, it was not very bright. Spain was lucky enough to score in the seventh minute and from that moment on, Mr. Kubala's men limited themselves to preserving the result without making an excessive effort to seek a better result.

Given the lack of success, the Swiss launched the attack and put the Spanish defense in trouble. Avoiding the possible tie that threatened the Spanish team on several occasions. Iribar, finally, made a brilliant save from Kunzli's shot, thus ending the illusions of the local players.

Soccernostalgia Question: What was the consensus about Kubala and his tactics at the end of this first season?

Mr. Josele Carbonell Response: (English Translation: During these first four matches of the hope of Spanish football, Mr. Kubala, the label of considering our coach as the champion of friendly matches is already evident. Powerful Germany beat, tied with future World runner-up champions after trailing 0-2 and we beat modest Switzerland at home. On the bulky victory against Finland in an official match for the World Championship qualification in which we were already eliminated, the vendetta for the defeat conceded in Helsinki months before was forged. Counting the unofficial match against Hannover SV (ranked at the bottom of the Bundesliga at that time) and the two U-23 matches against Italy, 51 players were called up in the different calls for those seven games. Mr. Kubala wanted players who gave their best and were proud to play for the National Team. With sacrifice and work, the fruits would come. In fact, of the first ten games as a coach, he only lost one. The most crucial and the one that prevented us from attending the final phase of the European Championship in Belgium in 1972. It was in Moscow against the Soviet team on May 30, 1971. But that's another story ...)
