Interview conducted in English and Italian:

Come veniva visto questo all'epoca?

Soccernostalgia Question: For these 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Vittorio Pozzo chose to maintain the spirit of the games and selected mostly students, none of the players had ever played for the National Team before. How was this viewed at the time?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: It was a well-considered choice, because the Olympics were held in August, when the Italian championship was stopped for a break after a long season. The professionals were tired and not very motivated, it was better to give young and little-known players an opportunity to show themselves.

Soccernostalgia Question: The first match of the 1936 Olympics was against the United States on August 3, 1936. It was a difficult match as Italy won (1-0). Pietro Rava was sent off and Achille Piccini was almost sent off. Why didn’t the team function properly?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response:  Almost all the players fielded by Pozzo had little international experience and Pozzo himself had also had to take the position of main coach, initially intended for Angelo Mattea, after the club that had him under contract, Napoli, had not released him for the trip to Berlin. Italy is therefore awkward and nervous, with an overly individualistic attitude.

Soccernostalgia Question: After this match against the United States, Pozzo apparently was furious and made the players face their responsibilities. Do you know more about this team talk?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Yes, he tells it himself in his book “Champions of the World”, published in 1960: “I banged my fists on the table, I said that someone had the intention of doing what he wanted and liked, I would drop everything and go home . The team needed a dressing down."

Soccernostalgia Question: For the quarterfinals match against Japan on August 7, 1936, Italy functioned better and won (8-0). How did the press view this performance?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): Il Giappone incuteva qualche timore perche´ pochi giorni prima aveva superato la Svezia.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Japan caused some fear because a few days earlier they had overtaken Sweden. The very large result surprised the experts quite a bit, also because after the negative performance against the United States, there was a bit of pessimism. A Rome newspaper, il Messaggero, spoke of the "Triumph of class". Bertoni's return to attack in particular was decisive. Vittorio Pozzo had him treated for a contracture by Doctor Zezi, official doctor of the Italian rowing team, who put him back on track after treating him with Roentgen rays.

L'Italia fatica e vince (2-1) dopo i tempi supplementari. Cosa puoi dire di questa performance?

Soccernostalgia Question: In the semifinals, Italy faced Norway on August 10, 1936. It would be similar to Italy’s match in the 1938 World Cup against the same opponent. Italy struggled and won (2-1) after extra time. What can you say about this performance?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: It was perhaps the toughest opponent of the entire competition, also because it fielded the senior national team, not young students like Italy. It was a very open race, with frequent reversals in front. Italy was thrilled by the fact of playing for the first time at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, in front of a large audience. The addition of Alfonso Negro, right winger for Fiorentina, was decisive.

Soccernostalgia Question: Following this match, can you discuss Pozzo’s gesture to invite the Norwegian group on the Italian bus after the Norway bus had not arrived?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: It was a gesture that well describes the great sportsmanship of Pozzo and his collaborators. Not only did he invite the Norwegians onto the Italian bus, but he also forbade his players to sing after the victory, so as not to further humiliate their defeated opponents.

Soccernostalgia Question: Italy’s opponent in the Final was the Austrian Amateur side on August 15, 1936. It would be another difficult match that would go into extra time with Italy winning (2-1) and becoming Olympic Champions. How was Italy’s performance viewed?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: There was a long wait, lasting 5 days, before the final and Pozzo did everything he could not to burden his players with too much tension. Every evening the blue team was visited by the famous athlete Jesse Owens, who brought with him the guitar and an accordion, creating a jovial atmosphere, dancing the belly dance. Furthermore, the Azzurri players relaxed with other activities, such as the boomerang, an absolute novelty at the time, and some unauthorized free exits to which Pozzo turned a blind eye.

It was a match of the highest level: the Azzurri took the lead with Frossi, the Austrian equalized by Wallmueller and 2-1 in extra time again with Frossi. Pozzo talks about a "miracle" and one of the best successes of his career. The local newspapers naturally celebrated this triumph, even though it arrived in the middle of summer, when in Italy, interest in football is traditionally at its lowest levels.

Soccernostalgia Question: By winning the gold medal at the Olympics, Italy joined Uruguay as the Olympic and World Cup winners. More significantly for Pozzo, he became the only Manager to have won the Olympic and World Cup titles. Was he at this point regarded as the best Manager in Europe?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): Sicuramente.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Surely. Not only for the Italian newspapers, but also several foreign commentators underlined Pozzo's feat in shaping a new team in just a few days and taking it to the top step of the podium, including the Frenchman Jacques de Rijswick, special correspondent of Paris Soir.

Alfredo Foni e Pietro Rava in difesa insieme a Ugo Locatelli e Sergio Bertoni.

Soccernostalgia Question: Pozzo would find four important players for the 1938 World Cup winning side. Alfredo Foni and Pietro Rava in defense along with Ugo Locatelli and Sergio Bertoni. How beneficial was their Olympics experience?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Very useful, in particular for the full-backs Foni and Rava, who went to renew a department that had had several problems in previous years. But also that of Locatelli, who played in the 1938 final against Hungary. Locatelli was a very useful player because he knew how to play in different roles. He began his career as a striker, but both in 1936 and 1938 he played as a midfielder. Bertoni, on the other hand, was part of the squad, but was not used in France.

Soccernostalgia Question: Annibale Frossi stood out not only for his goals but for playing with eyeglasses attached with an elastic band. Why did he not get further opportunities under Pozzo afterwards?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Frossi, top scorer in Berlin 1936 with 7 goals, had the misfortune of emerging in a period in which Italy had a rich flourishing of world class strikers, including Piola, Meazza and Ferrari and unfortunately he had no space. He preferred to concentrate on his studies and was among the few Italian Olympic champions to complete his university studies obtaining a degree in law.

Soccernostalgia Question: In closing, what is your analysis of Pozzo’s Olympics adventure?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: It was an exhilarating journey that laid the foundations for the future, not only for 1938, but also for any subsequent editions of the FIFA World Cup. I am sure that if the 1942 and 1946 editions, canceled due to the war, had been played, Pozzo would have had a good basis to be able to win the third title.
