International Season 1976/ 77, Part 10 (April 1977)

April

Hungary won a key qualifier vs. USSR at the end of the month.
Mark Lawrenson earned his first cap for Republic of Ireland in a friendly vs. Poland.
Hans Krankl scored 6 times in Austria’s (9-0) win over Malta in a World Cup qualifier.
West Germany’s matches in this month were the first in seven years that did not include Franz Beckenbauer. Berti Vogts was now the team captain in his absence.
For their match vs. Yugoslavia, Rolf Russmann and Felix Magath (as a substitute) earned their first caps.
For their match vs. Northern Ireland, Abramczik and Klaus Fischer earned their first caps.
The selections of Schalke’s Russmann and Fischer was controversial. They had been involved in a bribery scandal with Schalke in 1971.
