Notes:
-Match number 433 for France and number 497 for West Germany.

- The first international match hosted at Strasbourg since November 6, 1968 France 0-Norway 1.

-Genghini scored on a volley at 6 meters line from a cross by Didier Six, deflected by Briegel.

-Maxime Bossis  captained France in the abscence of Platini. He left at halftime as his club Nantes had a match against Metz the next day.

-Didier Six assumed captaincy second half

- France played a 4-3-3 formation with Bravo and Genghini acting as “meneurs de jeu” and two wingers. In the second half Domergue came in as left back, Battiston became sweeper and Amoros moved to right back.

-Platini was not released by Juventus for this match.

-The following France players in addition to Platini were missing:  Alain Giresse, Tigana , Girarrd , Tusseau and Toure (Source: L’Equipe de France de Football, L’Integrale des 497 Rencontres (1904-1991)., Author: Jean-Michel Cazal.

-Uli Stieleike and Bernd Schuster were not released by Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively for West Germany.

-Jean-Marc Ferreri was supposed to have started the match , however, due to fever, he was a substitute.

-Jean-Francois Domergue’s first match for the national team.

-Didier Six was playing for a second division club (Mulhouse). He also played for RC Strasbourg on two separate spells, in 1981 and 1986.

- This was Phillipe Anziani’s first match for France since vs Brazil in 1981.

-The first match between the two countries since the 1982 World Cup Semifinal in Seville.

- Schumacher was roundly booed in the pre-game warm-ups and during the match. The French crowd still had his foul on Battiston during the 1982 World Cup in their memory.


-France’s last victory over West Germany was February 23, 1977 when they won 1-0. Battiston and Rummenigge were the only players who played in that match.

-Rudolf 'Rudi' Völler became manager of Germany in August of 2000.

- Didier Six played at Stuttgart (1981-1983) and was a teammate of the Forster brothers.

-Wolfgang Rolff played at Strasbourg (1989-90).

  1. All of the French players were playing for French clubs, while all of the German players were playing for German clubs - totally different to the current day!


    Is Didier Six the last player to represent France while playing for a second division club?

  2. You know I just remembered during 1985/86 season Maxime bossis played for racing club Paris who were in the second division
