-Spain’s next win, as well as the next match between the nations on Scottish soil, would be a UEFA European Championship Qualifier on October 12, 2010 in Glasgow that Spain won 3 to 2.
-Spain’s next win on home soil would be a UEFA European Championship Qualifier on October 11, 2011 in Alicante that Spain won 3 to 1.
-Missing for Spain, from the previous qualifier between the Nations in November 1984, were: Santiago Urquiaga, Victor, Urtubi, Carrasco, Santillana and Rincon.

-Missing for Scotland, from the previous qualifier between the Nations in November 1984, were the Liverpool pair of Steve Nicol and Kenny Dalglish.
Both missed the match through illness and were replaced by Gough and Archibald.
This was not known until an hour before kickoff.
-Much to the amazement of the Spanish press and Miguel Munoz, Steve Archibald who was having a fine season with Barcelona was not initially called up.
He was only included after Dalglish had to withdraw.
-The Scottish training sessions were disrupted by local gate crashers.
-The Spanish League matches had been postponed to prepare for this match, unlike the English and Scottish Leagues.
-Arthur Albiston of Manchester United was the only English League based player in the starting lineup.
-French Referee Michel Vautrot wore a green uniform instead of the customary Black to be distinguished from the Scottish uniforms.
-Richard Gough was booked in the 2nd minute for a foul on Gordillo at halfway line.
-Oranges, toilet rolls were thrown at Jim Leighhton by the Spanish fans.
-Scotland had a lackluster performance, with the attack force completely ineffectual.
-The Spanish goal was scored after Butragueno passed to Senor who crossed from the right for debutant Clos to head home.
-James Bett joined Aberdeen next season and became teammates with Leighton, Miller and McLeisch.
-Scotland Manager Jock Stein passed away 6 months later.
He had a heart attack during Scotland’s World Cup Qualifier on September 10, 1985 at Cardiff.

-Spain Manager Miguel Munoz resigned from his post following the 1988 UEFA European Championships.
He passed away on July 16, 1990.
-Both Managers had Champions Cup successes in consecutive seasons. Munoz with Real Madrid in 1966 and Stein with Celtic in 1967.
-Scotland’s Davie Cooper passed away on March 23, 1995 at the age of 39 from a brain haemorhage.
-This was Francisco Clos’ First cap and first and only goal. He would only earn two more caps in the next few months (Northern Ireland and Wales). All his caps were vs. British opposition.
-Gordon Strachan is the current Manager of Scotland. Mc Leisch and Camacho have also managed their respective nations.
-Mc Leisch and Souness have both managed Rangesr Glasgow.
-The other teams in this World Cup qualifying group were Wales and Iceland.
Spain won this group, Scotland finished second and qualified to the World Cup be eliminating Australia in a series of playoffs at the end of the year. By then they were managed by Aberdeen’s Alex Ferguson.

-Graeme Souness was appointed Rangers Glasgow’s Player-Manager in 1986.
As Manager he purchased Richard Gough and Maurice Johnston.
His purchase of former Celtic and Catholic player, Maurice Johnston in 1989 caused a major controversy.
-Spain’s next three matches were also all vs. British opposition.
A scoreless Friendly vs. Northern Ireland in Mallorca on March 27th was followed by a heavy loss vs. Wales in a World Cup Qualifier on April 30th that Wales won 3 to 0 at Wrexham.
Spain also played a scoreless tie vs. Republic of Ireland at Cork on May 26th.
The loss vs. Wales turned out to be Captain Luis Arconada’s last ever match for Spain.
Following that Andoni Zubizaretta became Spain’s starting goalkeeper and remained so until 1998.
-During the 1982 World Cup in Spain, Scotland played one match in Sevilla, though not in Sanchez Pizjuan but at Benito Villamarin Stadium.
On June 18, 1982 they lost vs. Brazil 1 to 4.
Scotland’s Souness, Miller, Mc Leisch, Strachan and Archibald were present that day.

-In fact Scotland’s last ever match on Spanish soil prior to this qualifier had been during the 1982 World Cup.
On June 22, 1982, they tied 2 to 2 with USSR at Malaga with Souness scoring one of the goals.
-Gerardo, Julio Alberto, Clos as well as Scotland’s Archibald won the Spanish League title with Barcelona that season.
-Real Madrid’s Camacho, Gallego and Butragueno won the UEFA Cup that season.
-Maceda and Gordillo joined Real Madrid the following season.
-The match was being played in FC Sevilla’s home ground.
Local FC Sevilla player ‘Francisco’ was one of Spain’s non-playing substitutes.
-Rafel Gordillo was a player for local rivals Real Betis.

-Aberdeen’s Miller, Mc Leisch and Leighton won the Scottish League that season.
-Scotland’s Bett, Souness and Archibald were Scotland’s only foreign (non-british based) players.
-Aberdeen’s Leighton, Miller, Mc Leisch had been part of Aberdeen’s Cup Winners Cup triumphant side of 1983 that defeated Real Madrid that included Camacho and Gallego.
-Graeme Souness had joined Serie A’s Sampdoria that season from Liverpool.
Gordon Strachan had joined Manchester United that season from Aberdeen.
-Souness was part of the Liverpool side that defeated Real Madrid in the 1981 Champions Cup Final that included Camacho.
-Roberto and Zubizaretta joined Barcelona in 1986.
