Why did the Dutch team wear PSV jerseys in Israel? Was it because the match was a friendly or other non-competitive game?
ReplyDeleteThis was a pre match photo, in the game itself they wore their usual jerseys, Phillips were one of the sponsors of the NT
DeletePhilips was the sponsor of the Dutch team during the 2nd half of the 80's. The Netherlands (and so were other national teams) were allowed to wear sponsored jerseys in unofficial matches. This photo was taken on 07.01.1989 in Petakh Tikva, when the Dutch (in their 3rd kit) played against Hapoel Petakh Tikva. This match ended in a 3-0 victory for the Netherlands.

ReplyDeleteThe Dutch team were on a trip in Israel in the beginning of January 1989. The national coach, Thijs Libregts, wanted to play friendly matches: a serious one against Israel on 4 January 1989 and a game in which the Dutch could 'experiment'. Due to some organizational problems, it was difficult to find a 'sparring partner'. Thanks to Piet Lagarde (a representative of Adidas) and Emmanuel Schaffer, former manager of the Israel national football team, a match against Hapoel was arranged.
