-This was the 4th meeting between the nations.

-This was the first match between the nations on Argentinean soil. Two of their previous three encounters had been on neutral venues both in Europe. (1958 in Sweden and 1966 in England during the World Cup Finals.)

-The previous match between the nations, as well as the previous match on German soil and Argentina’s only victory up to that point (away and otherwise), was a Friendly at Munich’ Olympiastadion on February 14, 1973 that Argentina won 3 to 2.

West German players: Hans-Hubert ‘Berti’ Vogts and Josef ‘Sepp’ Maier were present that day (on the field and/or the substitutes bench).

The Germans wore green jerseys for that match as well.

- West Germany’s previous win, was a World Cup Finals match in Malmoe, Sweden, on June 8, 1958, that the Germans won 3 to 1.

-The next match between the nations as well as the next match on German soil, was a Friendly at West Berlin’ Olympiastadion on September 12, 1979 that the Germans won 2 to1.

-The next match between the nations on neutral soil, as well as Argentina’s next victory, would be during the Mundialito Tournament at Montevideo’s Estadio Centenario on January 1, 1981, that Argentina won 2 to 1.

Argentina players: Olguin, Passarella, Tarantini, Ardiles, Bertoni, Luque and Gallego and West German players: Kaltz, Dietz, Rummenigge, Bonhof and Magath were present that day (on the field and/or the substitutes bench).

Kaltz scored an own goal for Argentina in that match.

Dietz captained West Germany and Passarella captained Argentina.

-The next match between the nations on Argentinean soil would be a friendly at Buenos Aires’s Estadio Antonio Vespuci Alberti (El Monumental) on March 24, 1982 that ended in a one to one tie.

-The defending World Cup Champions West Germany was on a tour of the continent to acclimatize to the weather and playing conditions one year ahead of the World Cup Finals.

They played four matches in ten days.

-Similarly Argentina had invited many European teams for a mini-World Cup of sorts to prepare for their World Cup.

-Both teams played in a 4-3-3 formation. Argentina with a flat back four and Germany with Kaltz as Libero.

-The Match referee, the Brazilian Arnaldo David César Coelho refereed the 1982 World Cup Final between Italy and West Germany on July 11, 1982 that Italy won 3 to 1.

West German players: Bernd Franke, Kaltz, Fischer, Rummenigge, and Magath were present that day (on the field and/or the substitutes bench).

-The selections of Schake’s Rolf Russman and Klaus Fischer were controversial. They had been involved in a bribery scandal with Schalke in 1971.

-West Germany’s previous two friendlies were the first in 7 years that Franz Beckenbauer was not included.

He had just transferred to New York Cosmos of NASL. This effectively ended his international career.

Attempts were made to include him for the 1978 World Cup squad, but it failed.

As a result Kaltz was assigned to be the libero for this tour and became the first in a long list of players that never truly replaced him.

-Georg Volkert had last played for West Germany in 1969.

-Ulrich Stilieke was overlooked for this tour and the World Cup, the following year, after transferring to Spain’s Real Madrid following the end of this 1976/77 season.

-Bernd Franke started in goal for West Germany as Sepp Maier was injured.

-Both Managers won the World Cup as Managers; Helmut Schoen in 1974 and Menotti in 1978 and both on home soil.

-Of all the European teams on tour of South America, the Germans performed the best.

-This was the first German lineup in ten years that started with no Bayern Munich players.

-The West Germans were clearly superior and fresher as this was their first match of the tour.

-In the 8^th minute, Volkert crossed from the left that Fischer could not connect and Abramczik’s shot was deflected off the bar for Fischer to head home.

-For the second goal in the 61^st minute, Franke gave the ball to Dietz who launched Abramczik in the wing on the right who crossed for Fischer to head home.

-For the third goal in the 70^th minute, Kaltz, after a one-two with Beer, crossed from the right for Holzenbein to head home.

-Passarella scored Argentina’s consolation goal from a cross by Luque on the left after a short corner.

-All four goals were headers.

- Bochini replaced Ricardo Villa shortly before halftime due to injury.

-Ardiles and Villa joined Tottenham Hotspur following the 1978 World Cup.

-The Local press called this match a ‘lesson in football’, as the Germans had dominated.

The Argentinean fans even applauded the West Germans for their performance.

In general Germany’s defense had been tighter.

The Kaltz and Russman partnership of Libero and stopper was praised.

Theirs was a difficult task as they were replacing Beckenbauer and an off form Georg Schwarzenbeck.

- The German media (Kicker sportsmagazin) contrasted Germany’s professional attitude on this tour vs. England’s more casual holiday style behavior.

Holzenbein, Fischer and Abramczik were also praised.

-For Argentina, Ardiles was praised for his performance.

-Berti Vogts, Holzenbein, and Bonhof were the only 1974 World Cup winners on the field, with Sepp Maier injured on the bench.

-From Argentina’s 1974 squad, only Carrascosa and Houseman were present that day (on the field and/or the substitutes bench).

-Americo Gallego assumed captaincy in the second half after Carrascosa was substituted.

-Passarella was booked in the 65^th minute after a foul on Abramczik.

-Shortly afterwards Abramczik himself was booked after interfering with Tarantini who was attempting to quickly take a free kick.

-In the 80^th min Fischer was sent clear one on one with only the goalkeeper to beat. Gatti intentionally fouled him outside of the box and was booked. By today’s rules he would have been immediately sent off.

-Argentina’s foreign contingent of Mario Kempes, Ruben Ayala and Carlos Bianchi were not called up.

- Vicente Ruben Pernia’s son Mariano played for the Spanish National team in 2006/2007.

Vicente Ruben Pernia was sent off in Argentina’s match vs. Scotland on June 18^th after he punched Scotland’s William Johnston in retaliation after a foul. He was eventually dropped from Argentina’s squad.

-Of this Germany’s touring squad, the following made the World Cup Finals squad the next year:

-Of Argentina’s squad, the following made the World Cup Finals squad the next year and became World Champions:

-Daniel Bertoni was sent off in Argentina’s match vs. England on June 12^th after he punched England’s Trevor Cherry in retaliation after a foul. He was suspended for four matches by the Argentine Federation.

-Argentina Captain Carrascosa, quit the squad and any World Cup hopes before the February 1978 training camp. He asked to be excluded because his wife was expecting a baby due at the month of the World Cup.

Daniel Passarella became Aregntina’s captain.

-Hugo Gatti was also excluded from Argentina’s Finals squad in early 1978. Ubaldo Fillol became the starting goalkeeper.

-SV Hamburg’s Manfred Kaltz, Peter Nogly, Georg Volkert and Wolfgang-Felix Magath won the Cup Winners Cup trophy that season.

- Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Berti Vogts and Rainer Bonhof won the Bundesliga title that season. They were also defeated in the Champions Cup Final vs. Liverpool that season.

- Heinz Flohe and Dieter Müller won the DfB Pokal with Koln that season.

-Daniel Passarella and Berti Vogts not only managed their respective nations but also managed other nations such as Uruguay (for Passarella) and Scotland and Azerbaijan (for Vogts).

They both managed their respective nations during the 1998 World Cup.

-West Germany’s unused substitute Heinz Flohe passed away on June 15, 2013.

-West Germany Manager Helmut Schön passed away on February 23, 1996.

-Both teams’ squads were home based.

- Hugo Orlando Gatti, Vicente Ruben Pernia and Alberto Cesar Tarantini were playing in their home stadium.

By the time of the World Cup, the Finals squad contained no Boca Juniors players as by then even Tarantini had departed.
 

-Unused Argentina substitute Oscar Víctor Trossero passed away on October 12, 1983, aged 30.

-Argentina’s Daniel Passarella and Daniel Bertoni were teammates at Italian Serie A club Fiorentina from 1982 to 1984.

-Daniel Bertoni and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge have both scored goals in the Final match of a World Cup. Bertoni in 1978 and Rummenigge in 1986 vs. Argentina.

- Argentina’s Daniel Passarella and West Germany’s Karl-Heinz Rummenigge were teammates at Italian Serie A club Internazionale Milano during 1986/87 season.

They have both captained their nations during World Cup Final matches. Passarella in 1978 and Rummenigge in 1982 and 1986.

-West Germany’s Manfred Kaltz, Wolfgang-Felix Magath, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Klaus Fischer were part of the West German squad that reached the Final of 1982 World Cup.

Magath and Rummenigge also were members of the 1986 squad that also reached the Final.

- Jorge Mario Olguín, Daniel Alberto Passarella,  Alberto Cesar Tarantini, Osvaldo Cesar Ardiles, Américo Ruben Gallego,  Daniel Ricardo Bertoni , Hector Rodolfo Baley as well as  Manager Cesar Luis Menotti also represented Argentina in the 1982 World Cup.

Daniel Alberto Passarella was also part of the 1986 World Cup winning squad, though he did not play due to injury.
