International Season- 1982/83, Part 1

August

The International season started in the aftermath of the 1982 World Cup in Spain that Italy had won.
There were few matches of interest in August as most nations were just recuperating from the World Cup. In  New York, the FIFA/UNICEF charity match took place that the Europeans triumphed.
France played its traditional August curtain raiser. Their opponents Poland,  had also been their opponents in their last match of the previous World Cup.
The experimental and under-strength French squad was torn apart in Paris (0-4). France were to host the 1984 Euros, so Michel Hidalgo had two years of Friendlies as preparation.
This match was also the death-nail of French goalkeeper Jean-Luc Ettori’s international career. The goalkeeper who was already on thin ice following his disappointing World Cup was jeered throughout the match.

The attendance was the lowest for Germany at home since the end of World War II.

Likewise, Felix Magath had retired from the National team in anger after not playing in the Final match of the World Cup.
