International Head-to-Head –Part Two, Italy and England-part 1 (1930s-50s)

1930s

The very first match between the nations took place in 1933 at Rome, at a time when England were stil boycotting FIFA, while Vittorio Pozzo was forging a World Cup winning side.

The second match between the nations, took place a few months after Italy had won the World Cup at Highbury. The match was somewhat an unofficial world championship, as England were still regarded the best side in the World.

However, the match is mostly rememebered due to its violence and n umber of fouls. It became known as the ‘Battle of Highbury’.

1940s

After nearly a decade, the Italians hosted England, just a prior to the Superga disaster, which killed many of the players that made up the backbone of the Italian National Team. Italy’s humiliating loss at home in 1948 (0-4) also marked the end of the Pozzo era as Italy Manager.

England’s win at home the following only confirmed their dominance and Italy’s decline.
