International Season 1985/86, Part 2 (September 1985)


September

Canada advanced to the World Cup by winning the Concacaf Finals group.
Poland directly qualified for the World Cup after a scoreless tie at home vs. Belgium. Belgium qualified for the play-offs. Belgium’s Eric Gerets made his return for Belgium after serving his suspension as part of the Standard-Waterschei affair.
Scotland qualified for a World Cup Playoff berth after earning a tie with dramatic penalty kick by David Cooper. This came at a price as Scottish Manager Jock Stein suffered a heart attack in the stadium and passed away.
France lost at East Germany and was left with the option to win its remaining two matches to qualify. Maxime Bossis became the recordholder of caps for France. For this match, he symbolically was appointed as Captain, despite the presence of Michel Platini.
Bulgaria qualified for the World Cup after an away win at Luxembourg.
West Germany dropped its first point in its Group after five consecutive wins, by tying (2-2) in Sweden.
This was their fourth straight match without a win overall.
Spain qualified for the World Cup after defeating Iceland. This was Iceland manager Tony Knapp’s last match in charge.
Italy lost a friendly vs. Norway at Lecce.This was the first ever international match at Lecce.
Italy Manger Enzo Bearzot celebrated 10 years as Italy manager as well as his 58th birthday.
