New Addition: Copa America-Part 1 (1983)

The interest for the Copa America, once a prestigious Tournament for South American continent, had been declining steadily since the emergence of the World Cup. The regularly held Tournament had been staged sporadically in the 60s and 70s, as the World Cup and Copa Libertadores held sway over the region.

The competition itself that was regularly hosted by a single nation had become a home and away fixture set-up much like continental club competitions.

The 1983 Edition would likewise follow this format.

The teams would be divided in three groups with the winners joining defending Champions Paraguay in the semifinals.

The tournament itself was spread over a few months, spanning from August to November.

The continent’s top two teams (Brazil and Argentina) had been under new Management since the end of the 1982 World Cup. The artistry and attacking philosophies of Tele Santana and Cesar Luis Menotti had been replaced with the more physical and defensive approach advocated by Carlos Alberto Parreira (Brazil) and Carlos Bilardo (Argentina).

They had been drawn in the same Group along with Ecuador. The Tournament kicked off in their Group (Number 2) on August 10^th when Ecuador hosted Argentina at Quito.

Argentina had foreign-based players unavailable as was the custom of the day for matches taking place during Europe’s pre-season and regular season.

This meant Diego Maradona and Daniel Passarella were not called up for the entirety of this competition.

Alejandro Sabella played in the number 10 position for Argentina.

For this match in Quito, Bilardo also could not call upon starting goalkeeper Ubaldo Fillol. He was involved in a contract dispute with his club River Plate and was suspended (He would join Argentinos Juniors shortly thereafter).

Nery Pumpido took his place in the net.

In addition, after being selected Trobbiani, Ponce and Camino were informed by CONMEBOL that they were suspended for this match due to their sending offs in a Copa Libertadores match with their club Estudiantes a month prior.

Ecuador also had the advantage of playing in altitude (more than 9,000 feet above sea level.)

Argentina went ahead from two goals by Jorge Burruchaga on either side of halftime. Ecuador got back in the game as the game wore on, with the Argentineans suffering from the altitude. After Ecuador’s first goal, Jose Luis Brown and Jorge Ron started arguing and were both sent off.

Ecuador deservedly leveled the scores in the 79^th minute and to most observers a draw seemed like a fair result.

Afterwards, Argentina Manager Carlos Bilardo requested their kit manufacturers ‘Le Coq Sportif’ to design their shorts to have at least one pocket, so that the players could place three to four slices of lemon.

Apparently, Argentina had brought two plastic bags filled with lemon during the match with Ecuador, one was stolen by a Policeman and the other by a ball-boy.

The following week, Ecuador hosted Brazil at the same venue. Brazil were missing Zico who was on the verge of transferring to Udinese and Captain Socrates due to injury.

Just like Zico, Toninho Cerezo had been transferred to the Italian League and joined his compatriot Falcao at AS Roma. Needless to say, both were absent from this Copa.

In Zico’s absence, Tita was placed in his position and Renato replaced the injured Socrates. Jorginho occupied the suspect right wing position for Brazil.

Brazil were also missing Eder, who had been suspended by his Federation due to tardiness.

Brazil played well in the first 15 minutes and scored their winner through Roberto Dinamite. However, after the goal they went into a defensive shell and allowed Ecuador to dictate the match.

Perhaps, they had learned Argentina’s lesson and did not want to needlessly exert themselves in the high altitude.

There were some disturbances during the match, as some fans invaded the pitch every time the play was stopped.

Brazil’s Andrade was sent off in the 55^th minute after a bad foul on Valdez.

However, the decision to send him off was mostly due to pressure from the opposition Management, delegation and even the fans.

Reduced in number, Brazil were forced to substitute Renato and enter China for an even more defensive formation.

Ecuador continued to dominate but were only able to send aimless high crosses into the box that were well handled by the organized Brazilian defense.

A foul on Brazilian goalkeeper Leao provoked a fight and the match was stopped. Eventually the police had to restore order and in doing so a policeman struck Brazilian defender Marcio. Due to the stoppages, the injury time was up to seven minutes.

The week after that on August 24^th, the big two faced off against one another when Argentina hosted Brazil at the El Monumental.

Argentina had Fillol back in the net and he captained the side.

Brazil were still missing the injured Socrates and the suspended Andrade.

In defense, Paulo Roberto and Toninho Carlos started ahead of Lenadro and Marcio Rossini.

Junior captained the team in Socrates’ absence.

Given the new philosophies of the respective Management, this was a scrappy affair, where neither team impressed.

Argentina won the match through a single goal from Gareca (after a one-two with Burruchaga).

This was Argentina’s first win over Brazil in 13 years and 1970. There was some relief for Bilardo who was under pressure to get results.

For Brazil, the midfield of Tita, China and Jorginho did not function and strikers Careca and Roberto Dinamite were non-existent.

On September 1^st, Brazil demolished Ecuador (5-0) at home. Leandro and Marcio were back in defense but Brazil were still missing Socrates.

Renato Gaucho started ahead of China to give Brazil a more attacking formation and he opened the scoring.  Roberto Dinamite chipped in with two of his own for the Tournament’s largest score.

On September 7^th, Argentina hosted Ecuador at El Monumental, where a win was assumed to be a formality for the home side.

The final score of (2-2 tie, just like the first leg) was surprising and misleading.

Argentina had completely dominated the match. Ecuador after their (0-5) drubbing vs., Brazil the previous week had opted for a super defensive formation with virtually nine players in defense.

Team Captain Lupo Cenen Quiñónez was the lone player up front and had to deal with both Mouzo and Trossero.

Argentina played with six midfielders ahead of Trossero and Mouzo in the center of defense. Ecuador only attacked three times during the match yet scored twice. In fact Argentina saved themselves from a defeat through a Burruchaga penalty kick in injury time, just after Ecuador had scored in the last minute. These dropped vital points vs. Ecuador would cost Argentina qualification to the next round.

On the following week, on September 14^th Brazil and Argentina rounded out the Group at Maracana.

Brazil had Andrade back from suspension, as well Captain Socrates, making his first appearance in the Copa.

It was predictably a poor match just like the first Leg, though Brazil had more chances in the second half. Argentina employed man-to-man marking to keep Brazil at bay.

Ubaldo Fillol had an excellent match and saved many shots from Roberto, Eder and Socrates. Fillol was afterwards signed by Flamengo and set to join his new club in December.

Despite taking three out of four points from Brazil, Brazil won the Group thanks to their home and away wins over Ecuador.

The Group number 3, containing Peru, Bolivia and Colombia, was perhaps the weakest of the groups. 1982 World Cup participants were favorites to win this group. This Group kicked off a few days after Group 2.

On August 14^th at La Paz, Colombia came away with a (1-0) win over Bolivia through a goal by Alex Valderrama.

Just three days later, they were defeated at Lima by Peru also by the slimmest of margins (through a goal by Franco Navarro).

On August 21^st at La Paz, Navarro once again came to the rescue and scored an equalizer in the last minute.

A week later on August 28^th, Peru once again came away with a late draw from its trip at Bogota (Colombia 2-Peru 2)

Three days later, Colombia once again drew at home (2-2) with Bolivia and lost any hopes of advancing. Colombia were headed for a win after going (2-0) up, but Bolivia scored twice in two minutes late in the game.

The Group concluded on September 4^th at Lima, with Peru predictably defeating Bolivia at home (2-1) and advance to the semifinals.

The first Group started the latest on September 1^st with Uruguay taking on Chile at Montevideo. Uruguay were missing Enzo Francescolli and in addition the Penarol contingent of the National team had been on tour in Spain and only arrived three days before the match.

Uruguay won (2-1) in a match where Uruguay’s Nelson Gutierrez and Chile’s Juan Rojas were both sent off.

Uruguay followed up with an easy win vs. Venezuela (3-0) three days later.

The Venezuela win proved costly as Uruguay lost Fernando Morena to injury.

Morena had been out of the National team since 1978 and Uruguay Manager Omar Borras had tried hard to finally convince him to rejoin the squad.

The aggressive nature of Venezuela surprised many. Rene Torres, who fractured Morena’s leg, was immediately sent off. In the ensuing arguments Nicola Simonelli and Uruguay’s Luis Acosta were also sent off.

Chile tried to come back in the race and defeated Venezuela (5-0) on September 8^th and three days later defeated Group rivals Uruguay (2-0) in Santiago.

Surprisingly given the importance of this match, no one was sent off.

Uruguay defeated Venezuela at Caracas (2-1) on September 18^th to provisionally move ahead (once again a player, Nestor Montelongo of Uruguay, was sent off).

Chile were to face Venezuela at the same venue three days later, but missed their chance to qualify by being held scoreless.

More controversy followed following Chile’s failure to qualify.  Rolando Molina of the Chilean Federation decided to hold onto the bonuses promised to the National team players. The players had earned their bonuses after wins over Venezuela and Uruguay. According to Molina all players were to blame except goalkeeper Roberto Rojas.

This decision caused an uproar amongst the players and appeals had to be made to recover the bonuses.

The semifinals were held the following month, with defending Champions Paraguay making their first appearance by taking on Brazil in Asuncion on October 13^th.

Paraguay played in front of a record home audience, but were missing Roberto Cabanas.

Brazil were missing Leandro and once again Socrates. As the away team Brazil played more defensively.

Andrade and Tita were able to control Julio Cesar Romero, Paraguay’s most lethal player.

With twenty minutes left, Paraguay took the lead, Delgado crossed from the right side for Morel to score.

The match seemed to be headed for a (1-0) win, until with two minutes remaining Eder volleyed the equalizer from a cross from the left by Mozer.

This was a vital away goal for a defensive minded Brazil. Carlos Alberto Parreira acknowledged afterwards that Brazil had played as he had wanted  ‘ugly soccer, but effective’.

On the same day, Peru hosted Uruguay for the other semifinal first leg.

Peru, missing Germán Leguía, were in general slower, but had good spells at the end of each half.

Uruguay, with Enzo Francescolli in the lineup, were generally in took control of the match. They took the lead midway through the second half. Carlos Aguilera picked the loose ball and scored from a rebound after a corner taken from the right side.

Peru almost tied the match in the 76^th minute, but Uruguay goalkeeper Rodolfo Rodriguez came to the rescue and saved Navarro’s penalty kick.

Uruguay’s away goal was similarly vital ahead of the second leg.

The following week on October 20^th the second legs of the semifinals were held.

Brazil hosted Paraguay at Uberlândia, still missing Captain Socrates, but with striker Roberto Dinamite (though he would have a disappointing match).

Brazil had a poor match at home and had actually played better in the previous encounter as the away team.

Paraguay needed to win and attacked more, but to no avail as Brazil held on for the scoreless tie that they needed to qualify.

Just like most of the previous matches, players were sent off and Andrade and Cabanas got their marching orders in the 79^th minute.

On the same day at Montevideo Uruguay took on Peru with a (1-0) lead from the first leg.

The Uruguayans were better organized and favored to win despite the return of Germán Leguía for Peru.

Surprisingly the Peruvians took the lead in the 24^th minute through Eduardo Malásquez.

Uruguay attacked more in second half and scored early in the half through Wilmar Cabrera and qualified for the Final.

One week later, Uruguay hosted Brazil at the Centenario for the first leg of the Final.

Brazil still without Socrates opted to start the more defensive China in midfield.

Uruguay dominated at home and were in complete control with Brazil reduced to the occasional counter-attack.

There was some crowd trouble and objects were visibly thrown around Leao’s goal area.

Just before halftime Uruguay took the lead. Luis Acosta was fouled, just outside of the box and Francescolli followed up to score.

However, the referee ruled out the goal and awarded a free kick. The advantage rule should have been applied, but in the end it made no difference as Francescolli scored from the ensuing free kick.

Brazil improved to some extent in the second half once Tita came in and replaced China in the 60^th, but Rodolfo Rodriguez was equal to the task in the Uruguay net.

With ten minutes left, Diogo doubled the score by dribbling past Leao after a one-two near the edge of the box.

On November 4^th, Brazil hosted the second leg of the Final at the Maracana.

Due to events in the first leg, where Brazil felt they were mistreated, this encounter promised to be just as physical.

Brazil had complained of Uruguayan fans throwing objects, as well as the match referee (Carlos Alberto Parreira had accused Paraguayan referee Hector Ortiz of favoritism).

It had been rumored that the Brazil Federation had been training ball boys in time wasting tactics to help the home side.

CBF President Giulite Coutinho had openly asked fans to be hostile to Uruguay because of their own reception in the first leg.

The Uruguay bus was met with stones and rocks and loud music was played outside their hotel.

Brazil had their Captain Socrates back but his presence made little difference as Uruguay were better organized tactically and physically.

Brazilian wingers Eder and Tita were unable to make much of an impact.

Brazil took the lead in the 23^rd minute. Jorginho picked up a rebound after a free kick by Eder.

In the second half, Borras sent on Venancio Ramos for Luis Acosta. With less than a quarter hour left, Ramos crossed from the right side for Aguilera who headed in the equalizer.

Uruguay were deserved champions against a Brazil squad unable to adapt to Carlos Alberto Parreira’s physical defensive tactics that were against their nature.

It was also obvious how big names like Socrtaes, Zico, Falcao and Cerezo were vital to Brazil for their future prospects.

Many criticized the inclusion of Roberto Dinamite who was thought of as a has-been.

Parreira himself criticized players such as Junior, Renato, as well as the aforementioned Roberto Dinamite.

He reiterated many times that he never had the available time needed for the players to adjust to his tactics.

He suggested that he would start clearing out some of the veterans and turn to the Under-20 graduates who had been victorious in their category that summer in Mexico.
He was fired before he could implement any of these options. These performances, as well as the equally disappointing Tour of Europe in the summer did not win him any points.

This was the last Copa America Tournament with this format of home and leg series. From the 1987 edition (in Argentina), the Tournament was properly staged within one Nation during the summer.
