International Head-to-Head –Part Four, Brazil and France -Part 1 (1950s-1980s)


1950s
The very first match between the nations took place at the 1958 World Cup in the semifinal. It was a match between the first Great Generations of either side, where Brazil won (5-2) through a Pele hat trick after France’s Robert Jonquet had left the field injured in the 37th minute.

1970s
The sides met twice in Friendlies in the decade. In the first one in 1977 at Maracana, France earned the respect of the Brazilian crowd by coming back from 0-2 to tie the match with Marius Tresor scoring one of his most famous goals for France. Less than a year later at Paris, Platini scored the winner against a Brazilian squad toruring Europe in preparations for the 1978 World Cup.

1980s
The sides met twice again. In 1981 in Paris, Brazil impressively defeated France with Tele Santana’s Jogo Bonito. In 1986, the two played in one of the most memorable World Cup matches in History. France defeated Brazil in a penalty kick shoot-out.
