Hungary finally won its first qualifier by defeating Cyprus (1-0) away from home under new Manager Joszef Verebes.
Italy won a key qualifier away from hoem at Portugal (1-0).
England defeated Spain at Madrid (4-2) with Barcelona based Gary Lienker scoring all four English goals.
Republic of Ireland won a key qualifier away at Scotland (1-0).
