International Head-to-Head –Part Seven, Brazil and (West) Germany (Part 1-1960s to 1980s)

1960s

The very first match between the Nations occurred on May 5th, 1963 at Hamburg. Pele’s Brazil (the then double World Cup Champions) won 2-1 with Pele scoring the winner.
This was followed by another friendly two years later (June 6th, 1965), this time at the Maracana, Brazil won (2-0) with Pele once again scoring.
West Germany defeated Brazil for the first time on Juen 16th, 1968 at Stuttgart (2-1). Brazil were missing Pele, who was on tour with Santos. For the Germans, some of their palyers had to meet up the squad on location.
Held and Neuberger had to be flown from USA, where they were on tour with Borussia Dortmund. Lorenz and Hottgers had to fly from the Black Sea, while on tour with Werder Bremen.
Franz Beckenbauer was in Lima,Peru with Bayern Munich and had to fly over 7,000 miles for this match.
The sides met once again a few months later (December 14th, 1968) at the Maracana in a (2-2) tie.

1980s

The two sides met one another more frequently. Three times just within the first couple of years of the decade. Brazil had the upper hand in the beginning of the decade by defeating West Germany in the 1981 Mundialito (4-1) (first time at a neutral venue), followed by an away win (2-1) at Stuttgart and another (1-0) win in 1982 at Maracana.
West Germany defeated Brazil for only the second time (first time in 18 years) in 1986 (2-0) at Frankfurt. The decade was rounded out with an uninspiring draw in 1987 at Brasilia (1-1) between two weakened sides.
