has sacked National Team Manager Julen Lopetegui just two days before their
World Cup opening match vs. Portugal. Lopetegui was set to replace Zinedine
Zidane at Real Madrid at the end of the World Cup. The Spanish Federation fired
him because the negotiations had occurred without their knowledge. Fernando
Hierro will take over as Manager. Hierro (the then Sporting Director) had urged
the Federation not to sack Lopetegui. The firing saved Real Madrid from paying
