The Euros-Part Six (1980 Edition)-part b (Qualifiers-Groups 5 to 7)

 

Group 5

This Group consisted of Czechoslovakia, France, Sweden and Luxembourg.

France and Czechoslovakia would cancel each other out in home and away matches. France’s undoing was dropping a point (at home) to Sweden, while Czechoslovakia won all the rest of its matches and just moved ahead of France by one point.

As a result, the 1976 Champions Czechoslovakia got a chance to defend their title.

Group 6

This Group featured the Soviet Union, Hungary, Greece and Finland.

At firest viewing this should have been a great to be decided between Hungary and USSR.

However, the two favored Nations would have a poor qualifying campaign, with the Soviets finishing dead last.

This allowed to Greece (who won all its home matches) to win the Group by one point over Hungary and Finald and qualify its first Euros Finals.

Group 7

This Group featured West Germany, Wales, Turkey and Malta.

The Germans were always favorites in this Group and comfortably won.

The side was now managed by Jupp Derwall, the former Asssistant of Helmut Schoen.

They started their campaign with two scoreless ties but won the last four.
