Teams on Tour-Part 11 (Argentina’s European Tour of 1980)

After Argentina won the World Cup in 1978 on home soil, they had four years of preparations for the next World Cup in Spain in 1982.

Argentina Manager Cesar Luis Menotti had a backbone of the 1978 winners that he could rely upon but also had to blood in youngsters to be ready for a couple of years’ time.

Menotti felt Tours in Europe were essential to prepare the team for the likely European opposition at the World Cup.

A year after the World Cup win, Menotti and Argentina embarked on their first preparatory tour of the old continent in the summer of 1979.

It was there that the European and global audience were introduced to the teenage Superstar Diego Maradona, the heir apparent to Pele as the World’s greatest player.

That Tour consisted of matches against Holland and Scotland, among others.

In the interim time, Maradona had only enhanced his reputation after leading Argentina to triumph in the U-20 World Cup in 1979.

Menotti had also used the 1979 Copa America as an experiment to try new players and increase his options along with the U-20 standouts.

For the year 1980, another Tour of Europe was to take place. Menotti once again underlined the importance of such tours to prepare for the defense of the World Cup.

This Tour in May 1980 would consist of matches against England, Republic of Ireland and Austria.

Menotti chose not to select any foreign-based players, and this meant that 1978 World Cup star Mario Kempes (at Valencia in Spain), Osvaldo Ardiles (at Tottenham Hotspur in England) and Striker Daniel Bertoni (at Sevilla in Spain, about to join Fiorentina in Italy) were discarded.

Ahead of heading to Europe, from April, Menotti selected a Group to train three days at the Military Camp of Villa Martelli (Another source stated that the team trained from Monday to Friday).

In defense Menotti still relied on 1978 winners such as goalkeeper Ubaldo Fillol, Team Captain Daniel Passarella, Jorge Olguin and Alberto Tarantini.

Luis Galvan was deemed too old at this point and Menotti was eyeing Hugo Eduardo Villaverde of Independiente as his replacement. Though in the end, Villaverde was injured just before the Tour and missed the matches.

In midfield Americo Gallego was ever present for Menotti. Besides Maradona already an established International, Menotti promoted other U-20 World Cup winners Juan Simon, Juan Barbas, Ramon Diaz, and Gabriel Calderon to the senior team to take part on the Tour.

In all Menotti picked five, 19–20-year-olds with the future in mind.

The options upfront were more of a concern for Menotti since the retirement of Rene Housemann and the injury to Oscar Ortiz.

The 1978 World Cup winners Leopoldo Luque and winger Jose Daniel Valencia competed for the striking positions with U-20 World Cup winners Ramon Diaz and Gabriel Calderon.

Rounding out the squad were players like Jose Van Tuyne, Victorio Ocaño, Carlos Ischia, Carlos Fren and Santiago Santamaria.

Argentina played one friendly match before traveling to Europe.

On April 30^th at River Plate’s El Monumental, Argentina took on League of Ireland XI. Incidentally, no River Plate players took part in this match as they had played in a Copa Libertadores match just two days prior. Argentina had to do without Captain Passarella, Tarantini and Luque.

Allegedly some of the Argentine Press also believed this was the senior Republic of Ireland National Team.

As expected, this was a match that Argentina would dominate with Maradona and Gallego in superb form. The League of Ireland XI just defended and limited the damages to one goal by Maradona (12^th minute).

It was early in this match that Hugo Villaverde would be injured and miss the Tour.

Argentina would start its Tour at Wembley on May 13^th facing potential World Cup rival England. It was a match billed as the clash between two of the best players in the World: Maradona vs. Keegan.

Argentina had not defeated England since 1964 and the ill-tempered 1966 World Cup quarterfinal (1-0 England win and Alf Ramsey’s ‘Animals’ remark) was also a back-drop in covering this match.

Hugo Villaverde’s injury forced Menotti to make adjustments in defense. Jorge Olguin moved from right back into the center of defense to partner Passarella, with Van Tuyne taking the right-back slot. In all seven of the 1978 World Cup winners took part in this match.

Santamaria made his International debut upfront (see Note 2 below for the Squad).

It would be a match dominated by the hosts who take a two-goal lead at either side of halftime through David Johnson.

Argentina pulled a goal back through a penalty kick by Passarella (55^th minute) after Maradona had been fouled by Kenny Sansom in the box. Just as Passsarella was about to take the spot kick, Keegan standing behind him, with his finger indicated to Clemence that Passarella would kick to the left side. He was proven right, though Clemence was unable to stop the attempt.

In the 69^th minute, Keegan settled the match with England’s third and reminded the defending World Cup champions of the task ahead.

Carlos Luis Ischia made his International debut with Argentina by coming on as a substitute in the second half.

Given the history between the sides, this match was peaceful and uneventful on the field.

At the end of the match the English crowd chanted, “You are no longer Champions”,

The crowd did however applaud Maradona and the sight of him swapping shirts with Kevin Keegan is one of the most historical images in the History of the game.

Unfortunately, this was the one and only time the pair faced each other in an official setting.

There were some stories off the field. While in London, Ubaldo Fillol had tried to buy Ray Clemence gloves, but could not find adult fitting.

It was also reported that ‘Pata’ Villanueva (Alberto Tarantini’s wife) had been fined £1,000 after being caught shoplifting at Harrod’s for £100 worth of clothes.

She stated that, “It was the biggest mistake I made in my life” but when she returned to Argentina, she said it had all been trumped up by the English police to “add to the psychological campaign against our players”.

It would be another six years before the sides would meet again, due to the Falklands War in two years’ time. This would be in 1986 and the ‘Hand of God’, but that is another story.

Three days later (May 16^th), Republic of Ireland hosted Argentina at Dublin.

Menotti made two changes from the previous match, Juan Simon (making his International debut, see Note 2 below for the Squad) started in defense, replacing Van Tuyne.

In attack, Ramon Diaz started ahead of Leopoldo Luque.

It would be a tense defensive match, with Argentina having great difficulty to break through the Irish defense.

The match was settled in the 28^th minute with Maradona taking a free kick to set up Valencia with a headed goal.

This match also marked the International debut of Gabriel Calderon (see Note 2 below for the Squad), who replaced Diaz in the 73^rd minute.

Argentina concluded its Tour on May 21^st at Vienna facing Austria. Menotti once again made two changes and started with the same lineup as the first match vs. England. Van Tuyne (in defense) and Luque (in attack) were back in the side ahead of Simon and Diaz.

For the Austrian hosts, this match was billed as Robert Sara’s Farewell match. By the time he had left the field in the 16^th minute, Argentina had taken a three-goal lead and the match was effectively over as a contest.

For the Austrians, the absence of Bruno Pezzey in defense was sorely felt. He was retained by his West German club Eintracht Frankfurt for the UEFA Cup Final.

The introduction of defender Heribert Weber for Kurt Welzl in the 29^th minute (after he had been hurt after a collision with Passarella) made no difference.

Kurt Jara did pull a goal back in the 20th minute hosts (the best goal of the evening) but in the second half Maradona scored twice more to complete his hat trick and Argentina won (5-1).

Victorio Orlando Ocaño made his only appearance of the Tour by coming on for Tarantini in the 29^th minute. This was his sixth and final match for Argentina.

Ischia, who came on in the 70^th minute, also made his second and final appearance for the National Team.

 

Cesar Luis Menotti would declare that he was satisfied with the Tour. However, the critics thought otherwise.

They questioned most particularly the performance of the defense that was exposed in the match vs. England.

The loss to England and the difficulty to break down the Republic of Ireland could not be masked with a satisfactory opening fifteen minutes vs. Austria.

Tarantini had a difficult time and perhaps the shoplifting incident of his wife affected his performances.

Fillol and Luque had a strained relationship with the Argentine Press before the Tour and that similarly might have affected them.

Juan Barbas was criticized in comparisons with Ardiles, though Menotti would maintain his confidence in him.

Ischia and Ocaño missed their opportunity and would be discarded. Juan Simon would also be discarded and would have to wait another decade to be recalled by Menotti’s successor Carlos Bilardo.

Diaz and Calderon earned some points and remained in the squad until the World Cup, while Luque was starting to lose his status.

There were two years left to the World Cup and more experimentations and Tours were on the horizon, most notably the 1981 Mundialito in Uruguay.

This Tour showed that Menotti still needed the likes of Ardiles, Kempes and Bertoni and Maradona’s brilliance was not sufficient without the experience of the foreign-based players.
