3-About two weeks before the matrh, Didier Six crashed his car one late night after a National Team get together at St. Germain. There were many questions surrounding this accident and his role. There were some who even suggested he should be penalized from the National Team as a disciplinary measure.

He was internally disciplined in the end and the sanction was not disclosed. Albert Enon started in his place.

4-Michel Platini’s first match of the season. He had been injured since the start of the season. He returned to training in January 1979 on a Tour of Mexico with his club Nancy. He had only returned to competitive League action in March 197.

5-French Federation President Fernand Sastre remarked that during France’s last three matches in Eastern Europe (1975 vs. East Germany, 1977 vs. Bulgaria and now Czechsolovakia), penalty kicks were called against France and called it a ‘Curious Coincidence’.

6-The penalty kick decision was contested and Specht stated that “In Paris, the penalty kick would not have been called.”

Battiston and Roger Jouve called up in their place.

6-There was some criticism about the date of the match as the League race was still ongoing. Strasbourg Manager Gilbert Gress felt this match would be of no value to the National Team, as the players would arrive there tired at a time of League fixture congestion. He felt many players would return injured as a result. He strssed this was not an attack at Hidalgo but at French Football in General.

7-Saint Etienne President Roger Rocher complained that more of his club’s players werre called up as opposed to direct rivals Nantes and Strasbourg.

As a result, Christina Lopez was withdrawn. Even when Specht was injured, Hidalgo chose not to call up Lopez to maintain balance between the clubs and called up Battiston instead.

Christina Lopez was angered and reminded everyone that he had stepped up at Bratislava, when others had withdrawn, and even captained the side. But now players were suddenly available to have a good time in New York and unjustly he had to be sacrificed. Lopez even went as far as to say he was leaving the National Team for good, before he was convinced otherwise by Hidalgo.

8-Iran had been the initial opponents for this match, but due to the Iranian Revolution, the match was called off.
