The Soccernostalgia Interview-Part 31 (Interview with Spanish Authors Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro and Mr. Sergio Galán on Real Madrid, Season by Season, 1985/86 season)

For this interview, I continue a project as I look back at past Real Madrid seasons and ask the opinions of knowledgeable Real Madrid observers.

Soccernostalgia Question: Despite finishing poorly in the League the previous season, there was renewed optimism at Real Madrid at the start of the 1985/86 season. Real Madrid still had not won the title since 1980. What were the realistic expectations of the fans and the press going into the season?

Pregunta Soccernostalgia: A pesar de terminar mal en la Liga la temporada anterior, había un optimismo renovado en el Real Madrid comenzó en la temporada 1985/86. El Real Madrid no ganaba el título desde 1980. ¿Cuáles eran las expectativas de los aficionados y la prensa de cara a la temporada?

Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro @SVilarino Response:  After several years of not being able to compete for the title, and some major disappointments (defeats in the European Cup final in 1981, and the Cup Winners’ Cup final in 1983), for the first time in the whole decade, there was optimism in Concha Espina. The signings for the upcoming year were excellent, and the squad had immense depth.

Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro @SVilarino Response:  Tras varios años de no ser capaz de competir en la liga y algunas decepciones importantes (derrotas en las finales de Copa de Europa y Recopa del 81 y el 83), por primera vez en toda la década había optimismo en Concha Espina. Los fichajes para la temporada que comenzaba eran excelentes y las plantilla tenía muchísima profundidad.

Mr. Sergio Galán @HemerotecaRMCF Response:  The expectations were great especially for the signings. It was not about arrivals of foreign signings who had hardly been seen playing, but soccer players who in our country had already given proof of their great quality. In addition to being the best in the League, as were Maceda, Gordillo and Hugo Sánchez. The expectation for the league was maximum.

Mr. Sergio Galán @HemerotecaRMCF Response: Las expectativas eran grandes sobre todo por los fichajes. No se trataba de llegadas de fichajes extranjeros que apenas se les había visto jugar, sino futbolistas que en nuestro país ya habían dado pruebas de su gran calidad. Ademas de ser los mejores de la Liga, como eran Maceda, Gordillo y Hugo Sánchez. La expectativa por la liga era máxima.

Soccernostalgia Question: Let’s look at the transfer activity in the off-season. To begin a new era, Mexican Pichichi Hugo Sanchez arrived from crosstown rivals Atletico Madrid. Experienced Spanish Internationals Antonio Maceda and Rafael Gordillo arrived from Sporting Gijon and Real Betis respectively. Cholo arrived from Real Zaragoza and Jesus Solana moved up from Castilla. Belgian midfielder Juan Lozano returned to Anderlecht, long-serving West German Uli Stilieke joined Swiss club Neuchatel Xamax. Francisco Pineda, Juan Jose, Alfonso Fraile were also offloaded, while Miguel Pardeza was loaned to Real Zaragoza.  How did public and press view the transfer activity?

Pregunta Soccernostalgia: Veamos la actividad de fichajes. Para comenzar una nueva era, el  Pichichi mexicano Hugo Sánchez llegó procedente del Atlético de Madrid. Los experimentados internacionales españoles Antonio Maceda y Rafael Gordillo llegaron del Sporting de Gijón y del Real Betis respectivamente. Cholo llegó procedente del Real Zaragoza y Jesús Solana subió desde el Castilla. El mediocampista belga Juan Lozano regresó al Anderlecht, el veterano alemán Uli Stilieke se unió al club suizo Neuchatel Xamax. También causaron baja Francisco Pineda, Juan José y Alfonso Fraile, mientras que Miguel Pardeza fue cedido al Real Zaragoza. ¿Cómo vieron el público y la prensa los fichajes?

Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro @SVilarino Response:  The transfer campaign was brilliant that summer. Hugo Sánchez, Rafael Gordillo and Antonio Maceda were three of the best players of La Liga, and a major upgrade for key positions of the team. They were nicknamed “La Quinta de los Machos” by Sánchez himself.

The biggest loss was Stielike, because he was a main leader of the team, but his rivalry and bad relationship with Juanito was well-known. They’ll see each other again in the games against Neuchatel in the UEFA Cup, and it would not be pretty.

Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro @SVilarino Response:  La campaña de fichajes de ese año fue brillante. Hugo Sánchez, Rafael Gordillo y Antonio Maceda eran tres de los mejores jugadores de la Liga y una tremenda mejora en puestos claves del equipo. Fueron apodados “La Quinta de los Machos” por el propio Hugo.

La principal baja fue Stielike, porque era uno de los líderes principales del equipo, pero su rivalidad y mala relación con Juanito eran bien conocidas. Ambos se verían de nuevo las caras en los encuentros contra el Neuchatel en la Copa UEFA, y no será un reencuentro bonito.

Mr. Sergio Galán @HemerotecaRMCF Response: In signings, within the local area, you couldn't sign better. For this the fan was very happy. At the exits there was a division of opinions due to the non-renewal of Uli Stielike. This was a player much loved by the fans and in his last match played, the League Cup final, the public shouted in favor of him and against Hugo, not because they didn't love this player. We must remember that due to the limit of foreigners, and already having Valdano, for the Mexican to arrive, the German had to leave.

Mr. Sergio Galán @HemerotecaRMCF Response:  En los fichajes, dentro del ámbito local, no se podía fichar mejor. Por ello el aficionado estaba muy contento. En las salidas hubo división de opiniones por la no renovación de Uli Stielike. Este era un jugador muy querido por la afición y en su último encuentro disputado, la final de la Copa de la Liga, el público gritó a su favor y en contra de Hugo, no por no querer a este jugador. Hay que recordar que debido al límite de extranjeros, y teniendo ya a Valdano, para que llegara el mexicano tenía que salir el alemán.

Soccernostalgia Question: Luis Molowny was maintained to manage this new upgraded squad and how did public and press view this?

Pregunta  Soccernostalgia: Se mantuvo a Luis Molowny para administrar este nuevo equipo mejorado. ¿Cómo vieron esto el público y la prensa?

Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro @SVilarino Response:  The main task for Molowny was to get results while keeping the veterans happy and the young members of the Quinta del Buitre growing. It was not easy, since Juanito, Camacho and Santillana were still important members of the squad along with Gallego. Sanchis, Butragueño and Michel were automatic starters, while Martín Vázquez was more of a rotation player. On top of that he had Valdano, who played the best season of his career, plus Maceda, Gordillo and Hugo Sánchez, the new signings. The only weak sport was in goal, where Ochotorena started as the main man but was not convincing enough.

As I said, there was optimism amongst the press and fans.

Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro @SVilarino Response:  El principal objetivo de Molowny era conseguir resultado mientras mantenía contentos a los veteranos y hacía crecer a los jóvenes miembros de la Quinta del Buitre. No fue fácil, porque Juanito, Camacho y Santillana todavía eran jugadores importantes, como lo era también Gallego. Sanchís, Butragueño y Míchel eran titulares indiscutibles, mientras que Martín Vázquez era aún un jugador de rotación. Además de esto, Molowny contaba con Valdano, que jugó la mejor temporada de su carrera, junto a Macedo, Gordillo y Hugo Sánchez, los nuevos fichajes. El único punto débil era la portería, donde Ochotorena comenzó como titular pero sin actuaciones convincentes.

Como dije, había optimismo entre aficionados y prensa.

Mr. Sergio Galán @HemerotecaRMCF Response: Good. Luis was a man of the house, loved by players, press and fans. I don't think anyone can say a bad word about him. Not as a coach but also as a person. Mendoza asked him to continue and Molowny, who was a club man, could not say no.

Mr. Sergio Galán @HemerotecaRMCF Response: Bien. Luis era un hombre de la casa, querido por jugadores, prensa y aficionados. No creo que nadie pueda decir una mala palabra de el. Ya no como entrenador sino también como persona. Mendoza le pidió continuar y Molowny, que era un hombre de club, no pudo decir que no.

 

Soccernostalgia Question: Real Madrid started the season in impressive fashion, taking advantage of Barcelona’s poor start. The amalgam was quick between the new recruits and th established players . Was this down to the Manager or the talent on dispaly?

Pregunta Soccernostalgia: El Real Madrid comenzó la temporada de manera impresionante, aprovechando el mal comienzo del Barcelona. La adaptación entre las nuevas incorporaciones y los jugadores consagrados fue rápida. ¿Se debió esto al entrenador o al talento que tenía a su disposición?

Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro @SVilarino Response:  Both. The squad was deep and full of talent, and Molowny was a perfect man to manage all those egos and different necessities.

Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro @SVilarino Response:  A ambas. La plantilla era larga y llena de talento, y Molowny era el hombre perfecto para manejar todos esos egos y necesidades diferentes.

Mr. Sergio Galán @HemerotecaRMCF Response: It was a mix of everything. Molowny was not a coach to impose his own scheme, but rather he gathered the talent that he saw in the team and let it flow.

Mr. Sergio Galán @HemerotecaRMCF Response: Fue una mezcla de todo. Molowny no era un entrenador de imponer su propio esquema, sino que reunía el talento que veía en el equipo y lo dejaba fluir.

(Real Madrid squad 1985/86)

Soccernostalgia Question: Real Madrid suffered its first loss of the season in November vs. Barcelona. Barcelona started improving and were just behind Real Madrid. However, Real Madrid pulled away in December and were untroubled from then on with Barcelona dropping points. They won the League on Matchday 30, with record number of points (56) and 11 point lead on Barcelona. Real won 26 out of 34 matches. Was this one of the most comfortable League title wins for Real?

Soccernostalgia Pregunta: El Real Madrid sufrió su primera derrota de la temporada en noviembre ante el Barcelona. El Barcelona empezó a mejorar y quedó justo por detrás del Real Madrid. Sin embargo, el Real Madrid se alejó en diciembre y desde entonces no tuvo problemas, con el Barcelona perdiendo puntos a menudo. Ganó la Liga en la jornada 30, con récord de puntos (56) y 11 unidades de ventaja sobre el Barcelona. El Madrid ganó 26 de 34 partidos. ¿Fue esta una de las victorias en Liga más cómodas para el Real Madrid?

Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro @SVilarino Response:  Yes, it was. The team was really good and played some impressive football. At the beginning of the season the results were short, and Real Madrid suffered specially away from home, but when 1986 came, they were already the best team in the country by far.

Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro @SVilarino Response:  Sí, lo fue. El equipo era muy bueno y jugó excelente fútbol durante buena parte de la temporada. Al inicio de la temporada los resultados fueron cortor y el Madrid sufrió, especialmente fuera de casa, pero con el inicio del nuevo año ya se había convertido en el mejor equipo del país con bastantes cuerpos de ventaja.

Mr. Sergio Galán @HemerotecaRMCF Response: It was not easy, because Madrid, after losing in Valladolid, had to achieve a streak of 14 games without losing (13 wins and 1 draw) to have a cushion of 6 points. The turning point was the second leg classic played at the Bernabéu. With the Madrid victory, Barcelona gave it all up for lost and of the last six games they only won one.

Mr. Sergio Galán @HemerotecaRMCF Response: No fue sencillo, porque el Madrid, tras perder en Valladolid, tuvo que lograr una racha de 14 partidos sin perder (13 victorias y 1 empate) para tener un colchón de 6 puntos. El punto de inflexión fue el clásico de vuelta disputado en el Bernabéu. Con la victoria madridista el Barcelona lo dio todo por perdido y de las últimas seis jornadas solo ganó en una.

 

Soccernostalgia Question: This was also the first season that ‘El Quinta del Buitre’ were mainstays of the Team. Emilio Butragueno ‘El Buitre’ had established himself the previous season. Michel and Sanchis had more responsibilties and Michel was selected for the National Team, while Sanchis was not far behind and was starring with the U-21 National Team. Is this regarded as the first great season of the ‘La Quinta del Buitre’?

Pregunta Soccernostalgia: Esta fue también la primera temporada en la que 'La Quinta del Buitre' fueron puntales del Equipo. Emilio Butragueño 'El Buitre' se había asentado la temporada anterior. Michel y Sanchis tenían más responsabilidades y Michel fue seleccionado con España, mientras que Sanchis no se quedó atrás y fue protagonista con la Selección Sub-21. ¿Se considera la primera gran temporada de 'El Quinta del Buitre'?

Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro @SVilarino Response:  This year is the confirmation of their talent. They played a lot and Butragueño, Sanchis and Míchel became automatic starters and fan favourites.  They were lads from Madrid, and that created an extra connection with the fans.

Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro @SVilarino Response:  Este año es el que confirma el talento que apuntaban. Jugaron mucho y Butragueño, Sanchís y Míchel se convirtieron en indiscutibles e ídolos de la grada. Era chicos de Madrid, y eso creó un vínculo extra con los aficiones.

Mr. Sergio Galán @HemerotecaRMCF Response: Probably yes. You just have to see the explosion of Butragueño in the World Cup and their following seasons. Too bad Sanchis' injury prevented him from going to Mexico.

Mr. Sergio Galán @HemerotecaRMCF Response: Probablemente si. Solo hay que ver la explosión de Butragueño en el Mundial y las siguiente temporadas de ellos. Lastima de la lesión de Sanchis que le privo ir a México.

Soccernostalgia Question: In the UEFA Cup, Real Madrid once more performed ‘Remontadas’. Yet one more against Inter in the semifinals, but the most memorable one was in the third round vs. West German side Borussia Moenchengladbach. Real Madrid had lost the first leg (1-5), but in the return leg, Real overturned the deficit against all odds by winning (4-0). Describe the reaction afterwards and do you feel this was the best ‘Remontada’ of that Generation?

Pregunta Soccernostalgia: En la Copa de la UEFA, el Real Madrid volvió a conseguir sus famosas ‘Remontadas’. Una más contra el Inter en las semifinales, pero la más memorable fue en la tercera ronda contra el Borussia Moenchengladbach de Alemania Occidental. El Real Madrid había perdido la ida (1-5), pero en la vuelta la Real remontó contra viento y marea la desventaja al ganar 4-0. Describe la reacción después y ¿sientes que esta fue la mejor ‘Remontada’ de esa Generación?

Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro @SVilarino Response:  The remontadas became a synonim with those two years in the UEFA Cup. Real were used to kill Inter’s dreams in Europe during the 80s. The remontada against Borussia is probably the most famous one, along with the one against Anderlecht the year before (when El Buitre opened his wings in a European night for the first time). Against the Germans Real played again a suicidal game, only focusing on the attack. Once the remontada was completed, Juanito was substituted and left the field jumping, full of joy, looking like just another fan. This has become one of the most iconic images of this generation.

Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro @SVilarino Response:  Las remontadas se convirtieron en sinónimo de este bienio en la Copa UEFA. El Madrid se acostumbró a romper los sueños europeos del Inter en los 80. La remontada contra el Borussia es probablemente la más famosa, junto con la del Anderlecht el año anterior (cuando el Buitre desplegó sus alas en una noche europea por primera vez). Contra los alemanes el Madrid jugó de nuevo un partido suicida, 100% al ataque. Una vez se completó la remontada, Juanito fue sustituído y abandonó el terreno de juego dando saltos de alegría, como si fuese un aficionado más. Esta se convirtió en una de las imágenes más icónicas de esta generación.

Mr. Sergio Galán @HemerotecaRMCF Response: Without discussing it, yes. For the emotion and the difficulty in achieving the 4th goal. It was an almost impossible undertaking but the public and the players took an oath to do it, and as has been seen in this 2022 with the Champions League, European matches transform everyone in this club.

Mr. Sergio Galán @HemerotecaRMCF Response: Sin discutirlo, si. Por la emoción y la dificultad en lograr el 4º gol. Era una empresa casi imposible pero el publico y los jugadores se juramentaron para hacerlo, y tal como se ha visto en este 2022 con la Champions, los partidos europeos transforman a todo el mundo en este club.

Soccernostalgia Question: Just like the previous season, after such displays in the previous rounds, the UEFA Cup Final (this time vs. Koln) was rather comfortable. Describe the Final and the atmosphere just before and after?

Soccernostalgia Pregunta: Al igual que la temporada anterior, después de tales actuaciones en las rondas anteriores, la final de la Copa de la UEFA (esta vez contra Koln) fue bastante cómoda. Describe la final y el ambiente justo antes y después.

Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro @SVilarino Response:  Before the final there was a lot of confidence in the team, although Koln was a very strong side, full of internationals, past and future. But, once again, the Santiago Bernabeu created a magical atmosphere and the team was a steamroller after the first goal from Allofs. Hugo Sánchez, Gordillo, Santillana and Valdano were the heroes of the day. It was a matter of managing the advantage in Germany. These two victories in Europe, plus the winning campaign in the league put a lot of pressure on the team’s shoulders for the years to come: YOU MUST WIN THE 7th EUROPEAN CUP.

Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro @SVilarino Response:  Antes de la final había mucha confianza en el equipo, aunque el Colonia era un conjunto muy potente, lleno de internacionales pasados y futuros. Pero, una vez más, el Santiago Bernabéu creó un ambiente mágico y el equipo fue una apisonadora tras el gol inicial de Allofs. Hugo Sánchez, Goridllo, Santillana y Valdano fueron los héroes ese día. Era simplemente cuestión de administrar la ventaja en Alemania para conquistar el título. Estas dos victorias europeas, junto a la exitosa campaña en la Liga, pusieron una gran presión sobre el equipo para los años siguientes: DEBÉIS GANAR LA 7ª COPA DE EUROPA.

Mr. Sergio Galán @HemerotecaRMCF Response: The first leg was very different than expected. Despite Allofs' initial goal, Madrid came from behind with hardly any problems to achieve a very comfortable income for the second leg. The illusion in another European title was present and the 5-1 was a clear satisfaction for club and fans. In Berlin, in a stadium without being filled, however, Madrid had some difficulties. It seemed that when things are easier, Madrid had it worse.

Mr. Sergio Galán @HemerotecaRMCF Response: El partido de ida fue muy distinto a lo esperado. Pese al gol inicial de Allofs, el Madrid remonto sin apenas problemas para lograr una renta muy holgada para la vuelta. La ilusión en otro titulo europeo estaba presente y el 5-1 fue una clara satisfacción para club y aficionados. En Berlín, en un estadio sin llenarse, sin embargo el Madrid tuvo alguna dificultades. Parecía que cuando son mas faciles las cosas, el Madrid lo llevaba peor.

Soccernostalgia Question: Mexican striker Hugo Sanchez justified his transfer by becoming the Pichichi for the second consecutive year (many more to come). Could he be considered the best signing of the Mendoza era?

Soccernostalgia Pregunta: El delantero mexicano Hugo Sánchez justificó su traspaso al convertirse en el Pichichi por segundo año consecutivo (y faltaban unos cuantos). ¿Se le puede considerar el mejor fichaje de la era Mendoza?

Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro @SVilarino Response:  Hugo and Gordillo were ace signings. The Spanish was a difference maker from the left, but the Mexican was something else. Everything he touched was turned into a goal. Although his character didn’t match that well inside the dressing room, his team-mates could not live without his striking prowess. Fantastic player, excellent signing. And a long-serving one.

Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro @SVilarino Response:  Hugo y Gordillo fueron fichajes estelares. El español marcaba las diferencias desde la izquierda, pero es que el mexicano era un fuera de serie. Todo lo que tocaba lo convertía en gol. Aunque su carácter no se integró demasiado bien en el vestuario, sus compañeros no podían vivir sin su capacidad rematadora. Jugador fantástico, fichaje excelente. Y longevo.

Mr. Sergio Galán @HemerotecaRMCF Response: For cost and performance, yes. Without hesitation.

Soccernostalgia Question: For his first season at the helm, Real Madrid President Ramon Mendoza won at home and in Europe. I assume he had the faith of the Madrid public?

Soccernostalgia Pregunta: En su primera temporada al frente, el presidente del Real Madrid, Ramón Mendoza, ganó en casa y en Europa. ¿Supongo que tenía el apoyo del público madrileño?

Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro @SVilarino Response:  Yes. He brought back the idea of seeing Madrid as the king of Europe again. The fans had faith in the team, and of course he was the boss. Although he was such a colorful character, he never stopped trying to improve the team while chasing the desired 7th European Cup.

Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro @SVilarino Response:  Sí. Fue él quien trajo de vuelta la idea de ver al Madrid como rey de Europa otra vez. Los aficionados le tenían fe al equipo y, por supuesto, él era el jefe. Aunque tuviese un carácter tan particular, nunca cejó en su empeño de mejorar al equipo en su sueño por conseguir la 7ª corona europea.

Mr. Sergio Galán @HemerotecaRMCF Response:  He knew how to connect with people. We came from a calmer and more restrained president (Luis de Carlos), who although he had faced the federation and Barcelona, was not quite lax with his rivals, in the eyes of the fans. Mendoza gave him one more point of "Madrid chuleria" with his statements and facts. In addition to being able to snatch the League from Barcelona.

Mr. Sergio Galán @HemerotecaRMCF Response: Supo conectar con la gente. Veniamos de un presidente mas tranquilo y comedido (Luis de Carlos), que si bien se había enfrentado a la federación y al Barcelona, no terminaba de ser muy laxo con los rivales, a ojos de los aficionados. Mendoza le dio un punto mas de “chuleria madrileña” con sus declaraciones y hechos. Ademas de conseguir arrebatar la Liga al Barcelona.

 

Soccernostalgia Question: At the end of the season, Luis Molowny quit his managerial post. Mendoza appointed Dutch Manager Leon Beenhakker to lead a new improved Real Madrid in the Champions Cup. How was this appointment and change received by the Press and the Public?

Soccernostalgia Pregunta: Al final de la temporada, Luis Molowny renunció a su cargo. Mendoza nombró al técnico holandés Leon Beenhakker para dirigir a un nuevo Real Madrid mejorado en la Copa de Europa. ¿Cómo fue recibido este nombramiento y cambio por la prensa y el público?

So the appointment of Beenhakker, who was famous for his offensive style of play, was well received. There were rumours of the club trying to sign a British manager during that summer (Toshack? Kendall?), but the team didn’t fit in the British mould.

However, after his arrival, and with the passage of time, many of his players consider him vital in those victorious years in the League. It was a bet by Mendoza that was very successful.

Soccernostalgia Question: How do you assess the performances of veterans such as Juanito and Santillana in this new stronger and younger team?

Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro @SVilarino Response:  Both were spiritual leaders of the team. Their play time was reduced, as they became rotation players, but they were very important during the whole season and specially in the European campaign, leading the team through the remontadas. Santillana was a backup for Hugo, Butragueño and Valdano. Juanito played mostly as an attacking midfielder, usually keeping Martin Vazquez on the bench.

Aunque sus minutos se vieron reducidos al convertirse en jugadores de rotación, los dos fueron muy importante durante toda la temporada, especialmente en la campaña europea, liderando al equipo en las remontadas. Santillana era suplente de Hugo, Butragueño y Valdano. Juanito jugó principalmente como centrocampista atacante, normalmente dejando a Martín Vázquez en el banquillo.

Soccernostalgia Question: This would also turn out to be the last full season of Argentine forward Jorge Valdano (as midway in the following season, he would be in-active due to Hepatitis). Can you describe this potent strike force of Valdano with Sanchez and Butragueno that season?

Soccernostalgia Pregunta: Esta también resultaría ser la última temporada completa del delantero argentino Jorge Valdano (ya que a mitad de la temporada siguiente, estaría inactivo debido a una hepatitis). ¿Puedes describir el potente ataque formado por Valdano, Hugo Sánchez y Butragueño esa temporada?

Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro @SVilarino Response:  Valdano played the best football of his career this year. Although he struggled during the first games of the season, he became later a focal point of Madrid’s attack, with Hugo Sánchez and Butragueño as his striking partners, one on his left and other on his right, in a very attacking-minded team. His link-up play and mobility were key, combining with el Buitre and creating space and chances for the Mexican striker.

Aunque tuvo ciertos problemas en los primeros partidos de la temporada, pronto se convirtió en el foco principal del ataque del Madrid, con Hugo Sánchez y Butragueño como compañeros, uno jugando a su izquierda y otro a su derecha, en un conjunto con una mentalidad muy ofensiva. La capacidad del argentino para combinar y su movilidad, fueron clave, entendiéndose muy bien con el español y abriendo espacios y creando ocasiones para el mexicano.

Mr. Sergio Galán @HemerotecaRMCF Response: It was a spectacular and little recognized trident. Between the 3 they scored in the League more than half of the team's goals. They complemented each other. Butragueño was the magic, Hugo the opportunist and Valdano the efficiency.

Soccernostalgia Question: Some of the old guard departed at the end of the season. veteran goalkeepers Miguel Angel and Garcia Remon retired. In any case, Ochotorena was the starter that season. Isidro and Bonet joined Real Mallorca. How were their departures viewed by the public?

Soccernostalgia Pregunta: Parte de la vieja guardia partió al final de la temporada. Se retiraron los veteranos porteros Miguel Ángel y García Remón. En cualquier caso, Ochotorena fue titular esa temporada. Isidro y Bonet se incorporaron al Real Mallorca. ¿Cómo fueron vistas sus salidas por el público?

Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro @SVilarino Response:  Isidro and Bonet were just not good enough for the team anymore. It was seen as a natural change. In the case of Miguel Angel and García Remón they were both legends of the last decade.  Both goalkeepers were internationals and at some point were difference-makers. They were going to be missed unless the club signed a new goalkeeper (they did sign Paco Buyo from Sevilla and he was going to be the starter for a decade).

Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro @SVilarino Response:  Isidro y Bonet ya no eran lo suficientemente buenos para el equipo y fue visto como un cambio natural. En el caso de Miguel Ángel y García Remón, ambos leyendas de la última década, fueron porteros que marcaron la diferencia y jugaron con la selección nacional. Se les iba a echar de menos a menos que el club firmase a un nuevo portero, que es lo que se hizo. Llegó Buyo del Sevilla y se hizo con la titularidad para la siguiente década.

Mr. Sergio Galán @HemerotecaRMCF Response: In the goal that year it was a transitory process. The departure of two mythical players left an open door for Ochotorena and Agustín, who, however, despite being two good goalkeepers, failed to gain a foothold with the arrival of Buyo the following year. The departures of Isidro and Bonet were calm. The first had already had his best years at the club and the second had been weighed down by his injuries in clashes with Migueli and Cidón.

La marcha de dos míticos dejó una puerta abierta a Ochotorena y Agustín, que sin embargo, y pese a ser dos buenos porteros, no lograron hacerse un hueco con la llegada de Buyo al año siguiente. Las salidas de Isidro y Bonet fueron tranquilas. El primero ya había dado sus mejores años en el club y el segundo venia lastrado por sus lesiones en los choques con Migueli y Cidón.

Soccernostalgia Question: In closing, at the end of this season, was this Real Madrid side being regarded as the best side since the 1950s?

Mr. Sergio Vilariño Ferreiro @SVilarino Response:  It was regarded as one of the best teams produced by the club, but to climb another step a European Cup was a necessity.

Mr. Sergio Galán @HemerotecaRMCF Response: Difficult question. The first seasons of Miljanic and Boskov, both achieving a double, were very good. I don't see a clear advantage of 85-86 with these two examples, if anything, winning a European title gives it a plus advantage, but not much either.
