Teams on Tour-Part 12 (Germany National Team’s South American Tour of 1992)

 As defending World Cup Champions, Germany had automatically qualified for the 1994 World Cup in USA. This meant that they were restricted to Friendly matches for almost two years.

 

Berti Vogts had become Germany’s National Team manager in 1990, picking up from the victorious Franz Beckenbauer.

His first objective had been the 1992 Euros. Germany had finished runners-up to the surprising Denmark side in these Euros. This was considered a failure by the high German standards and Vogts was constantly under pressure from a demanding media and public.

He was further hampered when veterans Andreas Brehme and Rudi Voeller retired from the National Team after the Euros.

The Euros had forced Vogts to reconsider his options. Manfred Binz had been left wanting as Libero and was discarded. Stefan Reuter also would be out of contention for the next few years.

Vogts was also unconvinced of Bodo Illgner’s displays in goal, who was now under threat from Andreas Köpke. Vogts would alternate between the two up to the World Cup.

Since 1990 and re-unification, Vogts had overseen the integration of former East German Internationals with Matthias Sammer and Thomas Doll as the pick of the bunch.

 

As part of the preparations for the upcoming World Cup, Germany toured South America in December 1992 to face Brazil and Uruguay.

Lazio striker Karl-Heinz Riedle was missing through injury. This allowed the likes of Thom, Kirsten and Labbadia an opportunity to play alongside Jurgen Klinsmann.

World Cup winning captain Lothar Matthäus had missed the Euros through injury. But he was back with the National Team as well as back in Germany with Bayern Munich.

The first match on the Tour was on December 16^th, 1992, with Brazil hosting the Germans at Porto Alegre.

Brazil included Bayern Munich’s own Jorginho and many other familiar names such as Taffarel, Branco, Bebeto and Careca (Junior and Romario would also come on in the second half).

The home team struck first in the 19^th minute with a long-range shot from Luiz Henrique.

Just before halftime, Illgner rushed out to block an attempt, which deflected off Bebeto and went into the net.

The match was effectively over as the tiring Germans could not make headway against the fresher home side.

Both sides made a series of substitutions in the second half.

The score remained unchanged until the last few minutes. Sammer pulled a goal back with five minutes remaining.

Brazil struck back and scored a third in the last minute with Jorginho scoring with a long-range shot from the right-side touchline.

Thomas Wolter earned his first and only cap for Germany in this match.

Martin Wagner also earned his International debut in this match.

Michael Zorc similarly made his International debut in this match in the second half.

Knut Reinhardt first capped in 1988, earned his seventh and final cap for Germany in this match.

The next match on the Tour was vs. Uruguay at Montevideo, four days later, on December 20^th. For this match, a furious Vogts made some changes.

He made sure that everyone was on notice and declared that had learned “to be more aggressive” with the players.

 

He stated that until the match vs. Brazil, he treated the players as friends, but now he would show who’s the boss.

Andreas Köpke started in goal in place of Illgner. It is possible, Vogts would have alternated the goalkeepers regardless, but Illgner had not acquitted himself well against Brazil.

Olaf Thon, Thomas Helmer, Michael Zorc, Thomas Doll, and Andreas Möller started in place of Christian Wörns, Thomas Wolter, Martin Wagner, Stefan Effenberg and Andreas Thom.

There were reports that Stefan Effenberg was dropped for disciplinary reasons. He had been displeased with his position on the field since the return of Matthaus.

Matthaus was back as the playmaker and Effenberg was shifted to the left side of midfield. In a Television Interview, Effenberg was ambiguous about his International future. Vogts stated that he had not seen the interview. He also said that Effenberg is not a star and should play like the others and now “he will have time to think.”

Vogts got the reaction he wanted from his team, and they convincingly defeated Uruguay (4-1) on home soil.

Just before halftime, Buchwald headed in Klinsmann’s cross from the left.

In the 60^th minute, Andreas Möller doubled the lead by going around the goalkeeper after being sent through.

In the 69^th minute, Thomas Häßler scored the third with an exquisite chip.

The Germans rounded out the scoring in the 76^th minute through Klinsmann.

Uruguay scored a consolation goal near the end, when Moran’s long cross was deflected by Thon into his own net.

Vogts expressed satisfaction with the result and stated that for 80 minutes they showed how good they can play.

He praised Klinsmann, Buchwald and Möller’s performance.

Germany ended the Tour on a high note but had been unconvincing against a quality opposition like Brazil.

It was clear Brehme and Voeller would be hard to replace, which would necessitate their recall by the time the World Cup rolled around.

Riedle’s absence was also felt as none of the attacking alternatives scored points.

Stefan Effenberg’s indiscipline would also come back to haunt Germany during the 1994 World Cup (foul finger…)

Vogts did not come away with many certitudes but saw the need to be firm with his players to instill discipline and get results.

He still had a team to (re)build with many positions still up for grabs.
