Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): Michel Platini a été nommé alors que la saison se déroule de manière dramatique. Quelle était l'ambiance à ces débuts alors que Platini n'avait que quelques jours pour préparer un important match de qualification pour la Coupe du Monde contre la Yougoslavie en novembre ?

Soccernostalgia Question: Michel Platini was appointed with the season underway under dramatic fashion. What was the atmosphere in these early days as Platini just had days to prepare an important World Cup qualifier against Yugoslavia in November?

Richard Coudrais Response: (Original Response in French):  La nomination de Michel Platini au poste de sélectionneur, le 1er novembre 1988, a surtout été un choix politique. Elle a été initiée par des personnages extérieurs qui ont profité de la position de faiblesse de la fédération. Cet épisode a d’ailleurs gardé le nom de “putsch de la Toussaint”. Toutefois, le nom de Platini faisait l’unanimité, même s’il n’avait que 33 ans, aucune expérience d'entraîneur et s’était un peu éloigné du football après la fin de sa carrière de joueur. La fédération a pris soin de lui adjoindre Gérard Houllier, ancien entraîneur du Paris Saint-Germain, qui connaissait parfaitement les joueurs du championnat de France. Les deux hommes ont eu une vingtaine de jours pour préparer la rencontre.

Richard Coudrais Response: (English Translation):  The appointment of Michel Platini to the post of coach, on November 1, 1988, was above all a political choice. It was initiated by external figures who took advantage of the federation's weak position. This episode has also kept the name of “All Saints’ Day Putsch”. However, Platini's name was unanimous, even though he was only 33 years old, had no coaching experience and had moved away from football somewhat after the end of his playing career. The federation took care to add Gérard Houllier, former coach of Paris Saint-Germain, who knew the players of the French championship perfectly. Richard Coudrais Response: (Original Response in French):  Cette décision a été diversement commentée, d’autant que l’on n’a pas laissé le choix aux intéressés (une sanction en cas de refus de sélection). En outre, Tigana jouait à Bordeaux et son président était partie prenante de la nomination de Platini à la tête de l’équipe de France. Donc Tigana ne pouvait pas refuser, et se retrouvait contraint de jouer contre son gré. Battiston, qui jouait à Monaco, sera rappelé plus tard, au début de l’année 1989. Il n’était pas enchanté non plus d’être rappelé de force, mais il a accepté de bonne grâce au nom de sa vieille amitié avec le nouveau sélectionneur. Chez les autres joueurs, ce rappel des anciens a fait grincer quelques dents, car cela signifiait que leur génération ne s’était pas montrée à la hauteur (ce que confirmaient malheureusement les résultats).

Richard Coudrais Response: (English Translation):  This decision has been variously commented on, especially since interested parties were not given a choice (a sanction in the event of refusal of selection). In addition, Tigana played in Bordeaux and its president was involved in the appointment of Platini as head of the France team. So Tigana could not refuse, and found himself forced to play against his will. Battiston, who played for Monaco, would be recalled later, at the beginning of 1989. Richard Coudrais Response: (Original Response in French):  Ce fut un très bon match des Tricolores en effet, face à une très bonne équipe de Yougoslavie. La France a ouvert la marque très tôt puis a mené au score jusqu’à un quart d’heure de la fin, mais les Yougoslaves ont trouvé les ressources pour remporter la rencontre. Toutefois, la satisfaction a été forte en France car l’équipe a bien joué et le match était plaisant. Le nouveau sélectionneur avait réussi son entrée. Il a en outre laissé une image très forte en se tenant debout auprès du banc, attitude très rare à l’époque, et avait délaissé le traditionnel survêtement pour un look plus soigné. L’effet Platini a fonctionné. On en aurait presque oublié, c’est vrai, qu’il s’agissait d’une défaite et que la situation dans le groupe qualificatif allait devenir fort compliquée.

Richard Coudrais Response: (English Translation):  It was a very good match for the Tricolores indeed, against a very good team from Yugoslavia. France opened the scoring very early then led until a quarter of an hour from the end, but the Yugoslavs found the resources to win the match. However, satisfaction was high in France because the team played well and the match was enjoyable. The new coach had succeeded in his entry. He also left a very strong image by standing near the bench, a very rare attitude at the time, and had abandoned the traditional tracksuit for a more polished look. The Platini effect worked. We almost forgot, it’s true, that it was a defeat and that the situation in the qualifying group was going to become very complicated.

Richard Coudrais Response: (Original Response in French):  Après le match de Belgrade, Tigana a été appelé pour la rencontre en Irlande mais il a dû déclarer forfait sur blessure. Même chose pour le match en Ecosse. Et on ne le reverra plus jamais par la suite. Il méritait une plus belle sortie. Il reste un “monstre sacré” de la génération dorée 1982-1986. Il a eu un parcours atypique et a mis quelques années à obtenir un statut de titulaire. Il est vraiment devenu indiscutable à partir de la Coupe du monde 1982 et a toujours été très bon lors des échéances décisives. Malgré une constitution physique très légère (1,68 m pour 62 kg), il a épuisé le géant Briegel à Séville. Pendant l’Euro 1984, il était le dernier à courir alors que ses coéquipiers étaient épuisés. Il a été l’homme des fin de matchs en donnant des ballons décisifs à Platini et Bellone.

Richard Coudrais Response: (English Translation):  After the match in Belgrade, Tigana was called up for the match in Ireland but had to withdraw due to injury. Same thing for the match in Scotland. And we never see him again after that. He deserved a better outing. He remains a “sacred monster” of the golden generation 1982-1986. He had an atypical career path and took a few years to obtain starting status. He really became indisputable from the 1982 World Cup onwards and was always very good during decisive events. Despite a very light physical constitution (1.68 m for 62 kg), he exhausted the giant Briegel in Seville. During Euro 1984, he was the last to run while his teammates were exhausted. Richard Coudrais Response: (Original Response in French):  Platini et Houiller restaient confrontés aux mêmes problèmes qu’a connu Henri Michel à savoir un grand nombre de forfaits ou de joueurs en méforme. Il fallait donc poursuivre, de gré ou de force, les expérimentations. Christian Perez a été une bonne surprise : il a ouvert le score très tôt en profitant de l’erreur d’un défenseur yougoslave puis a donné à Sauzée le ballon du deuxième but. Un petit gabarit, très vif. Platini l’a remplacé par Bravo juste après ce but et ce ne fut probablement pas une bonne idée. Quant à Alain Roche, il était chargé du marquage de Cvetkovic puis de Savicevic dans une défense un peu curieuse avec trois défenseurs centraux (Roche, Boli et Kastendeuch) et un arrière latéral (Amoros). L’ensemble de la défense a été mise en difficulté par les dribbleurs yougoslaves, notamment Savicevic entré en fin de match et qui a donné les deux ballons de but.

Un match contre la Hongrie était prévu en février, mais Platini a préféré que son équipe soit confrontée à des adversaires britanniques pour préparer le rendez-vous de Glasgow. Les Bleus se déplacent donc à Dalymount Park pour affronter l’Irlande puis à Highbury le mardi suivant pour jouer contre Arsenal. L’idée semblait bonne mais encore eut-il fallu que le sélectionneur puisse aligner les mêmes joueurs d’une rencontre à l’autre. Ce qui n’a pas été le cas.

A Dublin, Platini n’a gardé que cinq joueurs du match de Belgrade. Les Français obtiennent sur un terrain boueux un match nul satisfaisant. La défense s’est montrée très homogène, avec trois joueurs de Monaco, mais l’attaque ne s’est pas procuré beaucoup d’occasions.

Richard Coudrais Response: (English Translation):  When the Belgrade meeting ended, the France team immediately looked ahead to the Scotland-France match on March 8. A match against Hungary was planned for February, but Platini preferred that his team face British opponents to prepare for the Glasgow meeting. The Blues therefore traveled to Dalymount Park to face Ireland then to Highbury the following Tuesday to play against Arsenal. The idea seemed good but the coach had to be able to field the same players from one match to the next. It was not the case.

In Dublin, Platini only kept five players from the Belgrade match. The French obtain a satisfactory draw on a muddy field. The defense was very homogeneous, with three players from Monaco, but the attack did not create many chances.

Richard Coudrais Response: (Original Response in French):  Laurent Blanc était alors un meneur de jeu, avec le numéro 10. Un poste où ont été essayés Ferreri, Vercruysse, Touré, Bravo, Passi sans qu’aucun ne s’impose vraiment en patron. A 23 ans, Blanc provenait de l’équipe de France espoirs qui avait remporté le championnat d’Europe 1988. Mais il ne s’imposera pas non plus comme numéro 10 puisque dans son club, on le fait jouer libéro, un poste qu’il appréciait moyennement au départ mais dans lequel il va finalement faire la carrière qu’on lui connaît.

Richard Coudrais Response: (English Translation): Laurent Blanc was then a playmaker, with number 10. At 23, Blanc came from the French youth team which won the 1988 European championship. Celui-ci se retrouve dans un milieu de terrain Sauzée-Durant-Laurey-Blanc dont le plus expérimenté est le premier nommé avec six sélections. Devant 65.000 spectateurs et sous la pluie, les Bleus sont confrontés à une équipe écossaise surmotivée, et notamment l’avant-centre Mo Johnston, très critiqué en France pour ses performances moyennes avec Nantes. C’est finalement lui qui marque les deux buts de son équipe, profitant en outre des erreurs du gardien français Joël Bats peu à son avantage. La France n’était pas encore complètement éliminée, mais le résultat fut accueilli comme tel.

Richard Coudrais Response: (Original Response in French):  Patrick Battiston est en effet une grande figure de la génération 1982-1986. Il a débuté très jeune mais a mis du temps à se faire une place. Il a toujours été confronté à une forte concurrence, lorsqu’il était latéral (Bossis, Janvion, Amoros…) puis quand il est devenu libéro (Bossis). Il a gagné ses galons de titulaire pendant les saisons entre le Mundial 1982 et l’Euro 1984. C’est au Mexique, pour la Coupe du monde 1986, qu’il a vraiment atteint un très haut niveau, associé en défense centrale à Maxime Bossis.

Richard Coudrais Response: (English Translation):  Patrick Battiston is indeed a great figure of the 1982-1986 generation. He started very young but took time to find his place. He was always faced with strong competition, when he was a full-back (Bossis, Janvion, Amoros…) then when he became a libero (Bossis). He earned his starting stripes during the seasons between the 1982 Mundial and Euro 1984. It was in Mexico, for the 1986 World Cup, that he really reached a very high level, partnering Maxime in central defense Bossis.

Il était capitaine du FC Nantes à dix-neuf ans, jouait milieu de terrain mais assurait le rôle de libéro lorsque besoin (associé en défense centrale avec Marcel Desailly). Bien entendu, on était loin d’imaginer le joueur qu’il deviendrait, car on n’imaginait tout simplement pas l’équipe de France devenir championne du monde.  

Richard Coudrais Response: (English Translation):  The debut of Didier Deschamps in blue was indeed highly anticipated. Beyond his physical and technical qualities, we especially appreciated his tactical intelligence and his sense of responsibility. He was captain of FC Nantes at nineteen, playing midfielder but taking on the role of libero when necessary (associated in central defense with Marcel Desailly). Of course, we were far from imagining the player he would become, because we simply did not imagine the French team becoming world champions.

Richard Coudrais Response: (Original Response in French):  En fait, pour sa première saison, Platini n’a tout simplement pas fait mieux que Henri Michel. Il ne compte aucune victoire et a perdu les deux matchs qu’il ne fallait pas perdre, alors que Henri Michel lui avait laissé une équipe qui avait quand même récolté trois points sur quatre. Platini a été confronté aux mêmes problèmes que son prédécesseur, à savoir une génération moins talentueuse et de nombreux forfaits à gérer. Cette saison lui a toutefois permis de faire un état des lieux, et probablement de réfléchir à une stratégie à long terme, qu’il appliquera dès la saison suivante.

Richard Coudrais Response: (English Translation):  In fact, for his first season, Platini simply did not do better than Henri Michel. Platini faced the same problems as his predecessor, namely a less talented generation and many packages to manage. Le joueur sera définitivement barré par le duo Papin-Cantona. Il était ami avec le second mais était brouillé avec le premier. Les autres joueurs en revanche ne seront jamais rappelés. Vercruysse et Touré auraient dû avoir une grande carrière internationale. Ils avaient le talent, mais probablement pas le mental suffisant. Touré a connu toutes sortes de blessures et Vercruysse semble avoir été trop timide. Pour Kastendeuch, Sonor et Xuereb, Platini a estimé qu’ils n’avaient pas les qualités suffisantes pour poursuivre en équipe de France, ils n’avaient plus de marge de progression. Xuereb avait pourtant été redoutable en équipe de France olympique (9 buts en 11 matchs), mais n’a jamais confirmé au niveau au-dessus.

Il était prêt pour une nouvelle saison, mais savait qu’il n’avait plus le droit à l’erreur.
