Soccernostalgia Question: What was the mood with the French National team with Michel Platini in his first full season in charge in the Fall of 1989?

Richard Coudrais Response: (Original Response in French):  Depuis la défaite à Glasgow contre l’Ecosse, la France avait fait le deuil de la Coupe du monde 1990. Il restait certes une infime chance de se qualifier (elle perdurera jusqu’à la fin des éliminatoires), mais Michel Platini avait décidé de tourner la page. Son objectif était désormais de se qualifier pour l’Euro 1992 qui devait se dérouler en Suède. Il s’est ainsi donné un an pour préparer son équipe aux éliminatoires. 

Richard Coudrais Response: (English Translation):  Since the defeat in Glasgow against Scotland, France had mourned the 1990 World Cup. There certainly remained a tiny chance of qualifying (it would last until the end of the qualifiers), but Michel Platini had decided to turn the page. His goal was now to qualify for Euro 1992 which was to take place in Sweden. He thus gave himself a year to prepare his team for the playoffs.

 

Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): Il y avait eu beaucoup de bruit pendant l’intersaison avec l’Olympique de Marseille de Bernard Tapie et ses dépenses pour constituer une équipe pour participer à la Coupe des Champions. Soccernostalgia Question: There had been much fanfare in the offseason with Bernard Tapie’s Olympique Marseille and its expenditures to build a team to compete in the Champions Cup. Did this have appositive effect on the National team?

Richard Coudrais Response: (Original Response in French):  Bernard Tapie commençait en effet à prendre l’habitude de recruter des internationaux et notamment des joueurs de l’équipe de France. Après Giresse et Papin à son arrivée en 1986, le président de l’OM avait enchaîné avec Le Roux, Ayache, Genghini, Sauzée, Cantona, Vercruysse puis Amoros et Tigana en 1989… Suivront Deschamps, Boli, Casoni, Pardo, Angloma, Durand, Desailly et bien d’autres. Le fait que l’ossature de l’équipe de France provenait d’un même club était forcément bénéfique en termes d’automatismes. Beaucoup de grandes sélections s'appuient sur l’ossature d’un club.

Richard Coudrais Response: (English Translation):  Bernard Tapie was indeed starting to get into the habit of recruiting internationals, particularly players from the France team. After Giresse and Papin upon his arrival in 1986, the president of OM continued with Le Roux, Ayache, Genghini, Sauzée, Cantona, Vercruysse then Amoros and Tigana in 1989... Richard Coudrais Response: (Original Response in French):  Ce n’est pas la première fois que Papin et Cantona jouaient ensemble en équipe de France. Henri Michel, le précédent sélectionneur, avait testé le duo en deux occasions. Mais c’est bien à Malmö que son efficacité a été la plus convaincante. Cela deviendra l’attaque emblématique de l’équipe de France dans ces années-là. Avec cette association, Michel Platini avait réussi ce que l’OM n’était pas parvenu à faire. 

Richard Coudrais Response: (English Translation):  This is not the first time that Papin and Cantona played together in the French team. Henri Michel, the previous coach, had tested the duo on two occasions. But it was in Malmö that its effectiveness was most convincing. This will become the emblematic attack of the France team in those years. With this association, Michel Platini had achieved what OM had not managed to do.

Richard Coudrais Response: (Original Response in French):  Il ne s’agit pas seulement d’une formule. Une équipe est vraiment née à Malmö parce que le sélectionneur l’avait décidé ainsi. Platini avait convoqué une quinzaine de joueurs et leur avait dit que quoi qu’il arrive à Malmö, il conservera le groupe jusqu’à l’Euro 1992. Le temps des expérimentations était terminé. Le sélectionneur avait eu le temps de réfléchir à un onze type et il avait décidé de s’appuyer dessus sur la durée. Quelques joueurs s’ajouteront au fil des matchs, mais Platini conservera son ossature et son schéma de jeu. 

Richard Coudrais Response: (English Translation):  It's not just a formula. A team was truly born in Malmö because the coach decided so. Platini had summoned around fifteen players and told them that whatever happened in Malmö, he would keep the group until Euro 1992. The time for experimentation was over. The coach had time to think about a typical eleven and he decided to rely on it over time. A few players will be added over the course of the matches, but Platini will retain his structure and his playing pattern.

 

Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): Le match suivant fut un match de qualification pour la Coupe du monde à Oslo, le 5 septembre 1989, qui se termina par un match nul (1-1). La Norvège a marqué vers la fin, mettant ainsi fin à tout espoir de Coupe du monde. Le public français était-il déjà résigné à cela ?

On aurait bien aimé qu’elle arrache sa qualification in extremis, mais l’élimination était digérée. A Oslo, le sélectionneur a aligné exactement la même équipe qu’à Malmö, confirmant que son plan n’était pas un effet d’annonce.  

Richard Coudrais Response: (English Translation):  Yes. As written above, the page had been turned for a long time. Richard Coudrais Response: (Original Response in French):  Les Français prennent une belle revanche sur l’Ecosse, responsable de leur élimination, et réalisent un match convaincant malgré quelques périodes brouillonnes. L’équipe s’appuie désormais sur des bases solides, les joueurs ont développé des automatismes et remportent quelques victoires qui font accroître leur confiance. Le pays pense sérieusement que c’est la fin des vaches maigres. Même si on est loin du jeu flamboyant des années Hidalgo.

Richard Coudrais Response: (English Translation):  The French took a nice revenge on Scotland, responsible for their elimination, and produced a convincing match despite some messy periods. The team now relies on solid foundations, the players have developed automatisms and have won a few victories which have increased their confidence. The country seriously thinks that this is the end of lean times. Even if we are far from the flamboyant play of the Hidalgo years.

On s’attendait à un festival offensif, mais l’équipe n’a péniblement inscrit que deux buts. On s'aperçoit que l’équipe constituée par Platini a du mal à prendre le jeu à son compte. Elle s’appuie sur une défense solide et deux attaquants de grande valeur, mais le jeu est assez basique. C’est typiquement une équipe de contre, un peu empruntée face aux équipes défensives. On note au passage que les buteurs de Toulouse ont pour noms Deschamps et Blanc, deux jeunes dont on imaginait encore mal la dimension qu’ils prendraient à l’avenir.

Richard Coudrais Response: (Original Response in French): Joël Bats termine sa carrière internationale avec 50 sélections, ce qui est énorme à l’époque. A son arrivée chez les Bleus en 1983, il met fin à une longue période où différents gardiens se sont succédé dans la cage de l’équipe de France. Son talent supérieur a donné une certaine assise à l’équipe de France et lui a permis notamment de remporter l’Euro 1984. Aujourd’hui, on retient surtout son match énorme contre le Brésil en quart de finale de la Coupe du monde 1986, où il arrête un penalty de Zico et le tir au but de Socrates. Dommage qu’il ait commis quelques erreurs lors de rencontres décisives contre la RFA à Guadalajara en demi-finale de la Coupe du monde, ou plus tard à Glasgow contre l’Ecosse. Il garde toutefois l’image d’un immense gardien. 

Richard Coudrais Response: (English Translation):  Joël Bats ended his international career with 50 caps, which was enormous at the time. When he arrived at the Blues in 1983, he put an end to a long period where different goalkeepers succeeded one another in the cage of the France team. His superior talent gave the French team a certain foundation and notably allowed it to win Euro 1984. Today, we especially remember his huge match against Brazil in the quarter-final of the 1986 World Cup, where he stops a Zico penalty and Socrates' shot on goal. Too bad he made a few mistakes during decisive encounters against West Germany in Guadalajara in the semi-final of the World Cup, or later in Glasgow against Scotland. However, he retains the image of an immense goalkeeper.

Richard Coudrais Response: (Original Response in French):  C’est le cheikh Fahad Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, célèbre depuis son intervention lors du France-Koweit de la Coupe du monde 1982, qui avait invité l’équipe de France à cette tournée au Koweït. Le dirigeant a toujours tenu à entretenir de bonnes relations avec la France depuis l’incident de Valladolid. Platini, comme la plupart des sélectionneurs arrivants, avait réclamé qu’on organise une tournée pour l’équipe de France. Cela permet de réunir les joueurs sur une longue période et de renforcer leurs affinités sur le plan personnel. Platini rêvait sans doute d’un périple en Amérique du Sud, mais la fédération a répondu à l’invitation du Koweït, qui reste beaucoup plus faible sur le plan sportif. L’équipe de France a joué de manière sérieuse avec trois victoires et aucun but encaissé. Même si les rencontres n’étaient pas d’un très haut niveau, les résultats ont démontré que les joueurs étaient impliqués.

Le vivier du football français était déjà très riche et le championnat de France d’un bon niveau, même s’il était loin des championnats italiens et espagnols. L’équipe de France n’était pas fermée, mais il fallait gagner sa place. 

Richard Coudrais Response: (English Translation):  Yes. While maintaining the backbone of the group and its playing pattern, Platini never hesitated to integrate new players. The breeding ground for French football was already very rich and the French championship was of a good level, even if it was far from the Italian and Spanish championships. The French team was not closed, but we had to earn our place.

 

Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): Le dernier match du Tour eut lieu contre l'Allemagne de l'Est le 24 janvier 1990, et la France s'imposa (3-0) de manière convaincante. La France était-elle désormais sur la bonne voie ?

Richard Coudrais Response: (Original Response in French):  Incontestablement. L’équipe de France ne perdait plus et n’encaissait plus de buts depuis plusieurs mois. Elle débutait sans vraiment le savoir une longue période d’invincibilité. C’était très encourageant. Même Deschamps marquait des buts (c’était son troisième en sept sélections). Avec le recul, on s’aperçoit que cette tournée avait une forte symbolique géopolitique : la France a rencontré le Koweït et la RDA dans une période à mi-chemin entre deux événements majeurs de l’époque, la chute du mur de Berlin et la Guerre du Golfe.  

Richard Coudrais Response: (English Translation):  Unquestionably. The French team had not lost or conceded goals for several months. Without really knowing it, she was beginning a long period of invincibility. It was very encouraging. Even Deschamps scored goals (it was his third in seven caps). Richard Coudrais Response: (Original Response in French):  Bruno Martini était en effet désigné comme le successeur de Joël Bats. Il lui avait déjà succédé en club, à Auxerre, puis dans l’équipe de France Espoirs. Il était déjà l’un des meilleurs gardiens du championnat. D’autres étaient également très bons, mais Platini a tenu à maintenir sa confiance à Martini, car il savait que changer trop souvent de gardien n’était pas bénéfique.

Richard Coudrais Response: (English Translation):  Bruno Martini was in fact designated as the successor to Joël Bats. He had already succeeded him at club, at Auxerre, then in the France U-21 team. He was already one of the best goalkeepers in the championship. Others were also very good, but Platini was keen to maintain his trust in Martini, as he knew that changing goalkeepers too often was not beneficial.

Soccernostalgia Question: The next match was a friendly on February 28, 1990, at Montpellier vs. future World Cup Champions West Germany. France won (2-1) and I imagine not many would have expected such a win a year before. Was this another reference match for the Platini group?

Richard Coudrais Response: (Original Response in French): Un des plus grands matchs de l’époque assurément. La RFA qui se présentait à Montpellier était une belle équipe : Matthaus, Brehme, Riedle, Klinsmann, sans oublier leur entraîneur Franz Beckenbauer. Ils deviendront champions du monde quelques mois plus tard à Rome, après avoir été battus par la France. Comme l’Italie en 1982 et comme l’Argentine en 1986. A Montpellier, les Allemands avaient ouvert le score, mais les Français ont renversé la rencontre et marqué par Papin et Cantona. Ce match a nourri des regrets car on s’est dit que cette équipe de France, si elle s’était qualifiée, aurait pu jouer un rôle intéressant en Italie lors de la Coupe du monde.

Richard Coudrais Response: (English Translation):  One of the greatest matches of the era for sure. The West Germany which presented itself in Montpellier was a great team: Matthaus, Brehme, Riedle, Klinsmann, without forgetting their coach Franz Beckenbauer. They would become world champions a few months later in Rome, after being beaten by France. Like Italy in 1982 and like Argentina in 1986. In Montpellier, the Germans opened the scoring, but the French turned the match around and scored through Papin and Cantona. This match fueled regrets because we said to ourselves that this French team, if it had qualified, could have played an interesting role in Italy during the World Cup.

Richard Coudrais Response: (Original Response in French):  Ce match de Budapest ponctuait une saison assez incroyable que les Bleus ont fini invaincus, avec huit victoires en neuf rencontres. Platini avait fait du bon boulot et on avait retrouvé une équipe de France conquérante, motivée, soudée, qui ne négligeait plus aucun match. Il y avait un bon état d’esprit.

Richard Coudrais Response: (English Translation):  This match in Budapest punctuated a fairly incredible season in which the Blues finished undefeated, with eight victories in nine matches. Toutefois, il n'hésitait pas à renforcer son équipe, par fines touches. A Budapest, il avait rappelé Luis Fernandez, auquel on ne croyait plus. Un coup de poker gagnant. Luis s’est parfaitement intégré dans cette équipe enthousiaste.
