International Season 1987/88, Part 3 (October 1987)

October
Scotland dashed Belgian qualification hopes by winning (2-0) at Glasgow. Michel Preud’homme played his first match for Belgium as official starting goalkeeper.
On October 5, 1987, France’s Patrick Battiston announced his international retirement.
Republic of Ireland defeated Bulgaria (2-0) in a key qualifier to maintain their hopes. Irish veteran Liam Brady was sent off in this match and received a four match suspension that virtually dashed his Euro 88 hopes should Ireland qualify.
Denmark defeated Wales (1-0) to qualify from their Group.
England defeated Turkey (8-0) at Wembley.
Ruud Gullit inspired the Dutch with a (2-0) in Poland by scoring both goals.
Anonio Cabrini played his last ever International in Italy’s scoreless match vs. Switzerland.
Zdenek Nehoda played in his farewell match in a Friendly vs. Poland at the end of the month. He played for the first 12 minutes.
Holland’s win over Cyprus at the end of the month was marred by the early injury to the Cypriot goalkeeper after flares were thrown from the stands. The result was nullified and ordered replayed.
