International Season 1976/ 77, Part 4 (October 1976)

October

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge earned his first cap for West Germany in a friendly win over Wales.
Miroslav Blazevic managed his second and last match as interim Manager of Switzerland in their loss in a home World Cup qualifier vs. Sweden.
Poland started its World Cup Qualifers with a key win at Portugal (2-0) followed by a comfortable home win vs. Cyprus.
Frank Stapelton scored in his first cap for Republic of Ireland in a friendly at Turkey (3-3).
In a World Cup qualifier at Sofia, Bulgaria held France to a draw (2-2).  This match will be remembered by Scottish referee Ian Foote’s apparent favoritism for the hosts. He awarded a dubious penalty to Bulgaria, which was missed.
He then denied a seemingly clear penalty for a foul on Platini.
Bulgaria’s equalizer was scored on an obvious offside position.
French fans remember sports announcer Thierry Roland’s outburst after the penalty award, when on the air he called Mr. Foote “Mr Foote, you are bastard….”
In a 1985 television interview, Roland apologized to Mr Foote for his outburst.
