Soccernostalgia Question: When AC Milan
started the 1988/89 season, they had been eliminated early in the previous
season’s UEFA Cup vs. RCD Espanol but had finally won the Scudetto after nearly
a decade. What were the expectations going into the Champions Cup?

Quando l'AC Milan ha iniziato la stagione 1988/89, era stato eliminato
all'inizio della Coppa UEFA della stagione precedente contro l'RCD Espanol, ma
aveva finalmente vinto lo scudetto dopo quasi un decennio. Quali erano le
aspettative per la Coppa dei Campioni?
Mr. Rho
Mauro Response: Milan returned to play a European match of Champions Cup after nine years
of absence. There was great expectation for this return to the most prestigious
European Cup. The elimination in the second round of the 1987/88 Uefa Cup
against Espanyol risked putting an end to Arrigo Sacchi's experience on the
Milan bench. In Milan it was rumored that the coach from Fusignano would hardly
have eaten Panettone at Christmas, thus taking his exemption for granted.
Instead, the farsightedness of President Silvio Berlusconi who confirmed his
confidence in Sacchi was rewarded in May with the victory of the Scudetto. So,
Milan returned to play the "cup with big ears" with the enthusiasm of
all of us fans who, let's not forget, in the meantime had also suffered the
shame of the double relegation to Serie B.
Mr. Rho Mauro Response: Il Milan è tornato a giocare una partita europea di Coppa
dei Campioni dopo nove anni di assenza. C'era grande attesa per questo ritorno
nella Coppa dei Campioni più prestigiosi. L'eliminazione al secondo turno della
Coppa Uefa 1987/88 contro l'Espanyol rischiava di mettere fine all'esperienza
di Arrigo Sacchi sulla panchina del Milan. A Milano si vociferava che il
tecnico del Fusignano difficilmente avrebbe mangiato il panettone a Natale,
dando così per scontata la sua esenzione. Invece la lungimiranza del presidente
Silvio Berlusconi che ha confermato la sua fiducia in Sacchi è stata premiata a
maggio con la vittoria dello scudetto. Così, il Milan è tornato a giocare la
"coppa dalle grandi orecchie" con l'entusiasmo di tutti noi tifosi
che, non dimentichiamolo, nel frattempo avevamo subito anche la vergogna della
doppia retrocessione in Serie B.
Soccernostalgia Question: The major
transfers in the off-season had been the arrivals of Dutchman Frank Rijkaard joining
compatriots Gullit and Van Basten. The departures included the loan of Daniele
Massaro to AS Roma. In hindsight how critical was the arrival of Rijkaard in
the European matches that season?
Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): I
trasferimenti più importanti in bassa stagione sono stati gli arrivi
dell'olandese Frank Rijkaard che si è unito ai connazionali Gullit e Van
Basten. Le partenze includevano il prestito di Daniele Massaro all'AS Roma. Con

Mr. Rho Mauro Response: Arrigo Sacchi had
an excellent roster of players available but, without a shadow of a doubt,
Franky Rijkaard's contribution in the season was decisive.
Giant in the center of the field
was present in all seven races that led to the conquest of the trophy. His
performance in Serie A was also excellent, where he played 31 games scoring 4
goals. However, it must be remembered
that due to the injury of defender Filippo Galli at the beginning of the
season, Arrigo Sacchi employed Rijkaard for most of the matches in the role,
unusual
for him, of additional defender.
Massaro's departure was certainly painful ... but we knew he would be back soon
...
Mr. Rho Mauro Response: Arrigo Sacchi aveva a disposizione
un'ottima rosa di giocatori ma, senza ombra di dubbio, l'apporto stagionale di
Franky Rijkaard è stato determinante.
Gigante al centro del campo è stato presente in tutte e
sette le gare che hanno portato alla conquista del trofeo. Ottima anche la
prestazione in Serie A, dove ha giocato 31 partite segnando 4 gol. Tuttavia, va
ricordato che a causa dell'infortunio del difensore Filippo Galli ad inizio
stagione, Arrigo Sacchi ha impiegato Rijkaard per la maggior parte delle
partite nel ruolo, per lui insolito, di difensore aggiuntivo. La partenza di
Massaro è stata sicuramente dolorosa... ma sapevamo che sarebbe tornato
presto...
Soccernostalgia Question: The first
round turned out to be very easy with AC Milan comfortable winners over Bulgarian
side Vitosha Sofia. The take-away was Van Basten’s four goal display at San
Siro. What do you remember from these matches?
Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): Il
primo turno si è rivelato molto facile con l'AC Milan che vince bene sulla
squadra bulgara Vitosha Sofia. Il take-away sono stati i quattro gol di Van
Basten a San Siro. Cosa ricordi di queste partite?
Mr. Rho Mauro Response: The first cup match on 7
September 1988 in Sofia, Bulgaria against Vitosha was not at all easy. Arrigo
Sacchi had a fever the day before the game but with cold clarity he preached
humility. The players listened to him and the 2-0 victory with goals from
Virdis and Gullit was the beginning of a beautiful adventure. In the return
match played at San Siro on 6 October 1988, as mentioned, Van Basten made a
personal show with 4 goals. In the final 5-2 there was glory again for Virdis
who scored a goal.
Mr. Rho Mauro Response: La prima partita di coppa del 7 settembre 1988 a Sofia,
in Bulgaria, contro il Vitosha non è stata affatto facile. Arrigo Sacchi aveva
la febbre il giorno prima della partita ma con fredda lucidità predicava
l'umiltà. I giocatori lo hanno ascoltato e la vittoria per 2-0 con le reti di
Virdis e Gullit è stata l'inizio di una bellissima avventura. Nella gara di
ritorno giocata a San Siro il 6 ottobre 1988, come detto, Van Basten fece una
personale con 4 gol. Nel finale 5-2 ancora gloria per Virdis che ha segnato un
gol.
Soccernostalgia Question: The
second-round tie vs. Red Star Belgrade was perhaps the hardest round of this
Great Milan. It’s possible Milan could have been eliminated at this stage and
Red star would have been equally deserving. It is also referred to as the match
with the fog that may have saved AC Milan as a losing match was to be replayed
on the following day. Much Drama for this round, what do you remember?
Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): Il
secondo turno contro la Stella Rossa Belgrado è stato forse il turno più
difficile di questo Grande Milan. È possibile che il Milan potesse essere
eliminato in questa fase e la Stella Rossa sarebbe stata ugualmente meritevole.
Viene anche definita la partita con la nebbia che potrebbe aver salvato il
Milan poiché una partita persa doveva essere rigiocata il giorno successivo.
Molto dramma per questo round, cosa ricordi?
Mr. Rho Mauro Response: No doubt. The match that took
place between 9 and 10 November 1988 in Belgrade was the most
"complicated" of the tournament. After the 1-1 draw in the first leg
played at San Siro on the evening of 26 October with an initial goal from
Stojkovic and a draw from Virdis, in a match in which the Red Star goalkeeper
Stojanovic was one of the best in the field, the match of return to Belgrade
was a thrilling match in every sense. The match was suspended due to fog at 57
minutes with the Red Star leading 1-0. At 3 pm the following day the match was
replayed starting from 0-0. After an oversight by the referee Pauly who did not
see a regular Milan goal (the ball entered half a meter beyond the goal line)
Van Basten thought about bringing Milan 1-0 ahead. After just three minutes
Stojkovic scored the 1-1 final goal. After the extra time ended on the same
result, it was the penalty kicks that sanctioned Milan's 5-3 victory. Giovanni
Galli saved Savicevic's and Mrkela's penalty, the new signing Rijkaard took
care to seal the passage of the round for Milan with the last decisive penalty.
Giovanni Galli was the Hero of Belgrade.
Mr. Rho Mauro Response: Nessun dubbio. La partita che si è svolta dal 9 al 10
novembre 1988 a Belgrado è stata la più "complicata" del torneo. Dopo
l'1-1 dell'andata giocata a San Siro la sera del 26 ottobre con gol iniziale di
Stojkovic e pareggio di Virdis, in un match in cui il portiere della Stella
Rossa Stojanovic è stato uno dei migliori in campo , la partita di ritorno a
Belgrado è stata una partita emozionante in tutti i sensi. La partita è stata
sospesa per nebbia al 57' con la Stella Rossa in vantaggio per 1-0. Alle 15 del
giorno successivo la partita si è ripetuta partendo dallo 0-0. Dopo una svista
dell'arbitro Pauly che non vede il gol regolare del Milan (la palla è entrata a
mezzo metro oltre la linea di porta) Van Basten ha pensato di portare il Milan

Savicevic e Mrkela, il neo acquisto Rijkaard si è preoccupato di suggellare il
passaggio del girone al Milan con l'ultimo rigore decisivo. Giovanni Galli era
l'eroe di Belgrado.
Soccernostalgia Question: AC Milan
entered the Springtime Quarterfinal swell out of Serie A contention against a
rampant Inter side and clearly the Champions Cup was its main objective. Not as
difficult as the matches against Red Star, nevertheless had difficulty breaking
down West German side Werder Bremen’s defense. After a scoreless tie in Bremen,
a Van Basten made the difference between the sides. What do you remember from
these matches?
Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): Il
Milan è entrato nei quarti di finale di primavera fuori dalla contesa di Serie
A contro un'Inter rampante e chiaramente la Coppa dei Campioni era il suo
obiettivo principale. Non così difficile come le partite contro la Stella
Rossa, tuttavia ha avuto difficoltà ad abbattere la difesa della squadra della
Germania occidentale Werder Brema. Dopo un pareggio senza reti a Brema, un Van
Basten ha fatto la differenza tra le due squadre. Cosa ricordi di queste
partite?
Mr. Rho Mauro Response: On 1 March 1989,
when the Champions Cup matches resumed after the winter break, Trapattoni's
"Record" Inter race towards the Scudetto was unstoppable. So. all the
energies of Arrigo Sacchi's Milan were dedicated to the Bremen match against
Werder. At the end of a difficult match that ended 0-0, Milan impressed the
German sports press for the attacking mentality they had shown on the
Weserstadion field. I clearly remember that a regular goal of "our"
Franky Rijkaard was also canceled. The return match at San Siro, on the evening
of 15 March 1989, was won by Milan thanks to a penalty converted by Marco Van
Basten. It wasn't a great match. Milan played, as usual, on the attack but
without being able to fully realize the many opportunities created. Once again,
however, the opponent's man of the match was the goalkeeper, Oliver Reck… this
means that the ball of the game was in the hands of the Rossoneri.
Mr. Rho Mauro Response: Il 1° marzo 1989, alla ripresa delle
partite di Coppa dei Campioni dopo la pausa invernale, la corsa
"Record" dell'Inter di Trapattoni verso lo scudetto è inarrestabile.
Così. tutte le energie del Milan di Arrigo Sacchi sono state dedicate alla gara
del Brema contro il Werder. Al termine di una partita difficile, terminata 0-0,
il Milan ha impressionato la stampa sportiva tedesca per la mentalità offensiva
mostrata sul campo del Weserstadion. Ricordo bene che è stato cancellato anche
un goal regolare del "nostro" Franky Rijkaard. Il ritorno di San
Siro, la sera del 15 marzo 1989, fu vinto dal Milan grazie a un rigore
trasformato da Marco Van Basten. Non è stata una grande partita. Il Milan ha
giocato, come al solito, in attacco ma senza riuscire a realizzare appieno le
tante occasioni create. Ancora una volta, però, il migliore in campo avversario
è stato il portiere, Oliver Reck… questo significa che il pallone era nelle
mani dei rossoneri.
Soccernostalgia Question: It was at the
Semifinals stage that this AC Milan became a Legend after its (5-0) demolition
of Real Madrid. It was not just the scoreline but the manner and style of play.
As I was watching the match unfold, it felt like I was witnessing History in
the making. What was the experience for you like?
Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): È
stato in fase di semifinale che questo Milan è diventato una leggenda dopo la

Grande Milan by “Arrigo Sacchi da Fusignano” unfolding before your eyes ...
Incredible.
After the 1-1 draw in the Madrid match on 5 April
1989 with a splendid diving header by Van Basten and another regular goal
denied to Gullit, with several saves by the Spanish goalkeeper Buyo the return
match, which was played at San Siro on the evening of April 19, 1989,
definitively certified the birth of Grande Milan. Arrigo Sacchi's team
literally humiliated Real Madrid by overwhelming them with 5 goals scored by 5
different players. As if to say that that, ... oh yes, it was the Perfect Team.
Mr. Rho Mauro Response: E chi lo dimentica? La Storia del Grande Milan di “Arrigo
Sacchi da Fusignano” che si snoda davanti ai tuoi occhi... Incredibile.
Dopo il pareggio per 1-1 nella partita di Madrid del 5 aprile 1989 con uno
splendido colpo di testa in tuffo di Van Basten e un altro gol regolare negato
a Gullit, con diverse parate del portiere spagnolo Buyo il match di ritorno,
giocato a San Siro sul la sera del 19 aprile 1989 certifica definitivamente la
nascita del Grande Milan. La squadra di Arrigo Sacchi ha letteralmente umiliato
il Real Madrid travolgendolo con 5 gol segnati da 5 giocatori diversi. Come a
dire che, ... oh sì, era il Perfect Team.

Soccernostalgia Question: By the time
of the Final, AC Milan’s victory appeared a formality and a foregone conclusion
and the scoreline reflected that as Steaua were never in it. How was it like
watching a final that appeared over and finished so early?
Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): Al
momento della finale, la vittoria del Milan sembrava una formalità e una
conclusione scontata e il punteggio rifletteva che la Steaua non era mai
presente. Com'è stato guardare una finale finita e finita così presto?
Mr. Rho Mauro Response: When you are 18
years old, and you have never seen your favorite team raise the most
prestigious cup to the sky ... there is no "too early" or "too
easy" ... The Gullit-Van Basten – Gullit – Van Basten goal sequence was
the worthy conclusion to a wonderful ride that lasted nine months ... Nine
Months ... Almost like giving birth. It was an apotheosis. The Camp Nou in
Barcellona was all colored in red and black …
After the hell of Serie B when we were the “Piccolo Diavolo” ... after
years of decline ... I enjoyed every minute of that final. Every second. And
just how much the final one is still celebrated can be understood by entering
the dedicated pages of the "Rossonero" site par excellence.

Before the 1987/88 Scudetto the
only "Rossoneri" poster in my room was that of Mark Hateley's goal in
the derby against Inter on October 28, 1984, ... that was the height of the
Rossoneri glory I had experienced with conscience until the day of the Scudetto
... And think, ironically, the day of the Scudetto that marked the beginning of
the saga of Sacchi's Great Milan, on May 15, 1988, the match was played in
Como, here in the province where I live.
Mr. Rho Mauro Response: Quando hai 18 anni e non hai mai visto la
tua squadra del cuore alzare al cielo la coppa più prestigiosa... non c'è
"troppo presto" o "troppo facile"... The Gullit-Van Basten
– Gullit – Van Basten sequenza di gol è stata la degna conclusione di una
splendida cavalcata durata nove mesi... nove mesi... quasi come partorire. Era
un'apoteosi. Il Camp Nou di Barcellona si è colorato di rossonero... Dopo
l'inferno della serie B quando eravamo il “Piccolo Diavolo”... dopo anni di
declino... mi sono goduto ogni minuto di quella finale. Ogni secondo. E quanto
sia ancora celebrato quello conclusivo lo si capisce entrando nelle pagine
dedicate del sito "Rossonero" per eccellenza.

Prima dello Scudetto 1987/88 l'unico manifesto rossonero
in camera mia era quello del gol di Mark Hateley nel derby contro l'Inter del
28 ottobre 1984... quello era il culmine della gloria rossonera che avevo
vissuto con coscienza fino ai giorni nostri dello Scudetto... E pensate, ironia
della sorte, al giorno dello Scudetto che segnò l'inizio della saga del Grande
Milan di Sacchi, il 15 maggio 1988, la partita si giocò a Como, qui in
provincia dove vivo.

Soccernostalgia Question: As the season
progressed, Alessandro Costacurta established himself in defense as a starter,
while Pietro Paolo Virdis’ career was waning. Besides Costacurta, who else
stood out in Europe (of course besides Van Basten)?
Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): Con
l'avanzare della stagione Alessandro Costacurta si è affermato in difesa da
titolare, mentre la carriera di Pietro Paolo Virdis era in declino. Oltre a
Costacurta, chi altro si è distinto in Europa (ovviamente oltre a Van Basten)?
Mr. Rho Mauro Response: It is difficult for me to choose.
Because, on closer inspection, all the players called into question by Sacchi
fully committed their duty. Players like Donadoni, Ancelotti, Colombo, Evani,
Virdis, Mussi ... perhaps less named than the Dutch ... but certainly they too
are undisputed protagonists of the destiny of Grande Milan. The defense, even
without Filippo Galli, found its balance with Costacurta and the retreat of
Rijkaard and with the solid coverage of Baresi, Tassotti and Maldini to finish

i calciatori messi in discussione da Sacchi hanno svolto pienamente il proprio
dovere. Giocatori come Donadoni, Ancelotti, Colombo, Evani, Virdis, Mussi...
forse meno nominati degli olandesi... ma di certo anche loro sono protagonisti
indiscussi del destino del Grande Milan. La difesa, anche senza Filippo Galli,
ha trovato il suo equilibrio con Costacurta e la ritirata di Rijkaard e con la
solida copertura di Baresi, Tassotti e Maldini per concludere con Giovanni
Galli che è stato decisivo nella sequenza dei rigori di Belgrado... insomma. ..
li ho nominati tutti.

Berlusconi era, is this perhaps the greatest and memorable triumph in Europe?
Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian):
Dall'era Berlusconi, è forse questo il più grande e memorabile trionfo in
Europa?
Mr. Rho Mauro Response: Surely. This victory marked the
beginning of a cycle which, in fact, changed the face of football not only in
Italy. If you think about it: the advent of Berlusconi and Sacchi, the birth of
Grande Milan, this idea of football changed "the rules of the
game". At that time, we were at the top of Europe and then we became world
champions against the Colombians of Medellin in December of that 1989 ...
But it all started with that intuition of
Berlusconi who fell in love with Arrigo's football with his Parma and had the
patience to wait for it to blossom like a red ... and black rose.
There is a video, shot in the Milan headquarters
the evening after the Scudetto victory in Como, with the general manager
Adriano Galliani and Silvano Ramaccioni of the Milan management staff answering
questions from journalists. Their goal was clear already that evening, and they
said it: to reach the top of Europe and the world in the space of a couple of
years. There was also talk of the possible arrival of Gianluca Vialli in Milan
...
In short, there was a specific project which was
then realized.
Mr. Rho Mauro Response: Certamente. Questa vittoria ha segnato l'inizio di un
ciclo che, di fatto, ha cambiato il volto del calcio non solo in Italia. Se ci
pensi: l'avvento di Berlusconi e Sacchi, la nascita del Grande Milan, questa
idea di calcio ha cambiato "le regole del gioco". A quel tempo
eravamo al vertice d'Europa e poi diventammo campioni del mondo contro i
colombiani di Medellin nel dicembre di quel 1989...
Ma tutto è iniziato con quell'intuizione di Berlusconi che si è innamorato
del calcio di Arrigo con il suo Parma e ha avuto la pazienza di aspettare che sbocciasse
come una rosa rossa... e nera.
C'è un video, girato nella sede del Milan la sera dopo la vittoria dello
scudetto a Como, con il direttore generale Adriano Galliani e Silvano
Ramaccioni della dirigenza milanese che rispondono alle domande dei giornalisti.
Il loro obiettivo era chiaro già quella sera, e lo dissero: raggiungere la
vetta d'Europa e del mondo nel giro di un paio d'anni. Si è parlato anche del
possibile arrivo di Gianluca Vialli a Milano...
Insomma, c'era un progetto specifico che poi è stato realizzato.

Press, was this triumph a vindication of Arrigo Sacchi’s zonal tactics?
Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): Per
quanto riguarda la stampa, questo trionfo è stato una rivendicazione della
tattica zonale di Arrigo Sacchi?
Mr. Rho Mauro Response: Sacchi arrived in Milan with very
clear ideas. He brought with him some of the players he had in Parma (Mussi and
Bianchi) in order to teach more experienced players like Baresi, for example,
to make them understand what movements he wanted to see on the pitch. In a
short time, his ideas were assimilated with all due respect to many who had
predicted a certain exemption well before the end of the first round of the
1987/88 championship. His philosophy was based on hard work and humility. He
once said in September 1988: "Do you know what is the best compliment I've
received since I've been at Milan? At San Siro, after the 3-0 at Cesena, their
sport director Pierluigi Cera told me: we came here to play in humility, but
you were humbler than us. "
I don't know how to translate it into English, but
the "Sacchiano motto” par excellence is the famous one that I leave you
"untranslated" and that, if you feel like it, you can only search: "To

Mr. Rho Mauro Response: Sacchi è arrivato a Milano con le idee molto chiare. Ha
portato con sé alcuni dei giocatori che aveva a Parma (Mussi e Bianchi) per
insegnare ai giocatori più esperti come Baresi, ad esempio, a far capire loro
quali movimenti voleva vedere in campo. In poco tempo le sue idee furono
assimilate con buona pace a molti che avevano previsto una certa esonero ben
prima della fine del primo turno del campionato 1987/88. La sua filosofia era
basata sul duro lavoro e sull'umiltà. Una volta disse nel settembre 1988:
"Sapete qual è il complimento più bello che ricevo da quando sono al
Milan? A San Siro, dopo il 3-0 al Cesena, il loro ds Pierluigi Cera mi disse:
siamo venuti qui per giocare con umiltà, ma tu eri più umile di noi».
Non so come tradurlo in inglese ma il "motto di Sacchiano" per
eccellenza è quello famoso che vi lascio "non tradotto" e che, se ne
avete voglia, potete solo cercare: "Per vincere ci vuole tre cose: OCCHIO,
PAZIENZA e BUCO DEL CULO”.

a fan, did this feel like beginning of an era in future triumphs in Europe or a
one-off?
Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): In

era anche abbastanza chiaro che era il risultato di un certo tipo di lavoro, di
una programmazione che lasciava poco o nulla al caso.
Dopo lo scudetto è arrivata la coppa... ed è stato
naturale per me aspettare "la prossima"... la Coppa Intercontinentale
a Tokyo.
Il resto è storia e in quell'epoca... noi eravamo storia
Grazie amico mio per avermi fatto tornare indietro nel
tempo per ricordare quei giorni meravigliosi...di bel tempo che c'era.
