-This was French player Phillipe Jeannol’s one and last cap. He was a member of the 1984 Olympic title winning team coached by Henri Michel.
-France’s Jean Tigana started this match with his fetish number 14 jersey, though later he would be refused such a request by UEFA and FIFA. As they required non-tournamnt matches’ starting jerseys to be from 1 to 11.
-Four past, present and future Euroepan player of the year winners took part in this match.
France’s Platini was the current France Football Magazine’s Ballon D’Or (European player of the year). The soviet Igor Belanov would be awarded the trophy that year.

-Platini eventually became the national team manger of France. Fernandez managed Israel.
Lobanovsky also managed Ukraine, as did (does) Blokhin.
Lobanovsky managed Gulf countries UAE and Kuwait.
Chivadze managed national team of Georgia.
French manager Henri Michel also managed many other nations, such as Cameroon, Morocco, UAE, Tunisia and Ivory Coast.
-This loss early in the qualifying campaign, as well as the comprehensive domination of the soviet team during the match signaled the end of the Platini generation.
France would not qualify for this tournament nor the next World Cup.
-After this match, Platini stated that qualification for the Euros is effectively over and France must concentrate on preparing younger players for the World Cup Qualifiers.
-France had not won a match since the win against Belgium on June 28, 1986. They would not win until April 29, 1987 vs. Iceland (Platini’s final match for France).
-The soviet starting lineup consisted of 7 Dinamo Kiev players.
-Soviets Zavarov and Aleinikov and French captain Platini were present and future Juventus players.
-Soviet players Khidiatullin, Zavarov and Yakovenko joined french clubs later in their careers. They played for Toulouse, Nancy and Sochaux respectively.
-It is to be noted that USSR caps are the recognized numbers prior to April 3, 1991. On that date the Soviet Federatuion decided to recognize certain matches by the Olynmpic team as Internationals. Therefore, the numbers may vary from source to source.
