Soccernostalgia Question: Henri Michel became National Team Manager after leading France to victory in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. He inherited a team from Michel Hidalgo that had just won the Euros and included perhaps the best player in the World at that moment, Michel Platini. How was his appointment regarded at the time?

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation):  It had been stalled since 1982, which is very rare in transitions between coaches. Henri Michel was very young, he had stopped his playing career in 1982, at the age of 34, and was therefore 36 when he became coach of the France team. For him to train, he was entrusted with the French Olympic team, after the president of the FFF, Fernand Sastre, offered him to take care of the French women's team.

But Michel Hidalgo, who was only 51, three years younger than Deschamps today, could have continued. He also regretted it afterwards, saying that he had made his decision to leave his post after the Euro a little too early. Personally, I think it would have been preferable for the Blues if he remained in office until 1986, accompanying the generation of Bossis, Rocheteau and Platini that he had launched until the end. Especially, as we will see, the contribution of Henri Michel during his first two seasons was minimal. It was more in the legacy than in the reinvention.

Soccernostalgia Question: The season started on September 5, 1984, with a friendly in Paris against Italian club Inter that included Liam Brady and new signing Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, losing (0-1). Henri Michel chose to experiment and included some of his Olympians like Bibard and Bijotat. How was this loss viewed?

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation):   It was the only match lost in the whole of 1984, but luckily it was also the only one that was not official since it was against a club. It is also the last time that such a match is organized at the start of the season, and no one missed it. During the Hidalgo period, the Blues made a point of winning this match, except in 1981 against Stuttgart (1-3). But there, between the title of European champion and the gold medal at the Los Angeles Olympics, this defeat did not leave a mark. Moreover, it has been largely forgotten since.

Soccernostalgia Question: France properly started its season with a World Cup qualifier, on October 13, 1984, at Luxembourg.  France won comfortably (4-0). Did Stopyra cement his place for Mexico 1986 starting with this match?

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation):   It was not a revelation, because he had been launched in 1980, four years earlier, but, despite a very good match against Portugal in February 1983 where he had also scored a double, he had never found his place in attack. Bernard Lacombe having put an end to his international career at the Euro where Dominique Rocheteau had been very disappointing, Henri Michel was looking for a real center forward, capable of weighing on the opposing defenses and opening up spaces for Platini and Giresse. And when a new coach recalls a player who had been dismissed, it is very important not to disappoint him.

Soccernostalgia Question: This match is also remembered for Platini being substituted, so that he could return to Italy and play in the Serie A in the following day. What can you say about this anecdote?

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation):   It's absurd (and now impossible) for a player to play two games in 24 hours, even if Pelé has often done so in his career when Santos made friendly tours around the world. But Juve were playing in the league against Verona on Sunday, and obviously they had the necessary arguments to negotiate with Henri Michel that Platini spend less than an hour on the pitch (he left in the 57th). Too bad, because while they were leading 4-0 in the 32nd minute, the French team did not score in the last half hour.

Soccernostalgia Question: On November 21, 1984, France played its next World Cup qualifier facing Bulgaria at Paris. France won with great difficulty with Platini making the difference with a penalty kick. Was it obvious at this point that Bulgaria would be the toughest opponents in the Group?

Bruno Colombari Response: (Original Response in French):  C’était difficile à dire.

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation):  It was hard to say. Bulgaria had participated in four World Cup finals in a row between 1962 and 1974, at the time when the French were scarce. But it was not yet the great team of 1994, which would go to the world semi-finals in the United States. And the Blues copiously dominated the Bulgarians for an hour, but, as against Luxembourg, they lacked realism in front. The penalty whistled in favor of the Blues is generous (ball on the arm of a defender in the area), but today it is systematically whistled. Close victory, therefore, but important victory, the eleventh of the year.

Soccernostalgia Question: France’s third World Cup qualifier and the last match of 1984 was on December 8th, 1984, at Paris vs. East Germany.  France won its third straight qualifier (2-0). Did the public believe at this point that qualification was more or less achieved?

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation):  No, because there were still three complicated trips to come in 1985, and we remembered that in 1976 and 1980 good starts had been followed by failed away games. But in any case, the start of Henri Michel's mandate was perfect, with three wins in three games and no goals conceded, except that of Collovati against Inter. For the first time, he could line up the magic square of the Euro together, after the withdrawals of Tigana then Giresse in previous matches. And Platini is going to have a huge game: he does not score, but he offers goal balls to everyone, recalling that he is also a very great collective player.

Soccernostalgia Question: France’s win over East Germany was its 12th in the calendar year. In fact, France won every single one of its matches in the calendar year. Up to this point, was this the most glorious year for the National Team?

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation):  From a statistical point of view, certainly: twelve wins out of twelve, 27 goals scored (including 13 for Platini alone), four goals conceded, ten clean sheets for Bats (and Bergeroo who entered against Austria), victories on England, the West Germany, Belgium and Spain, a first title for the 80th anniversary of the selection… Afterwards, we must moderate the appreciation by the fact that the Blues have played eleven times out of twelve at home, and the only away game was in Luxembourg. And they did not meet any South American team, nor Italy, nor the USSR. In 1984, it was obviously the best year for the Blues since 1904. Since then, it has surely been overtaken by 2000 and probably by 2018 and 1998, of course.

Soccernostalgia Question: This match vs. East Germany was also the last one for French Federation President Fernand Sastre, soon to be replaced by Jean Fournet-Fayard. What was Sastre’s role in France’s progress in the last decade?

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation):  He was a very great leader, who we will also find in 1998 when he co-chaired the organizing committee of the World Cup, with Michel Platini. Unfortunately, he died on June 13, the day after the victory of the Blues against South Africa. He would have deserved to attend the final, for all of his work: during his mandate, between 1972 and 1984, the number of licensees in France doubled and the French team went from being a second-class team, roughly at the level of Switzerland, that of European champion and favorite for the World Cup. It was he who brought in Stefan Kovacs in 1973, then who appointed Michel Hidalgo in 1976, a very rich idea certainly. And it was under his mandate, in December 1981, that France obtained the organization of Euro 1984 after applying in 1979, and that it is the only one to date to have won at home since the redesign of the tournament in 1980.

Soccernostalgia Question: There would be many months of inactivity before the next match. On April 3rd, 1985, France traveled to Yugoslavia for its next qualifier. Was the scoreless tie seen as disappointing or a good away point earned?

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation): It was a disappointment, because the Blues had beaten Yugoslavia twice recently, in 1983 in a friendly (4-0) and in 1984 at the Euro (3-2). But it was away, and as usual at that time, the Blues traveled very badly: in the last 20 years, they had played 26 times in competition on opposing ground (excluding final stages), for only 9 victories, including 3 against Luxembourg, 3 against Norway and one in Cyprus… With Hidalgo, the only significant away victory took place in Sweden in 1979 (3-1) but it was useless.

Soccernostalgia Question: Just like Stopyra in previous matches, do you think William Ayache earned his place in the French Group after this match?

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation):  He took advantage of the passage of Battiston in central defense and the disappointing performances of Michel Bibard at the right-back position, even if he played like him at FC Nantes, on the left side for that matter. This is only his second cap, after that of autumn 1983, and even if he did not have a great career in Blue, he will play in all 20 times until 1988 and will have a good World Cup. He even had a scoring chance in Sarajevo, which he didn't convert. But he had a good game.

Soccernostalgia Question: France’s final match of the season, and its next World Cup qualifier was at Sofia to face Bulgaria. The match in 1976 was memorable for all the wrong reasons. For this match on May 2nd, 1985, France suffered its first loss since losing to Denmark in 1983. A sequence of 15 matches. How was this loss viewed at the time?

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation):  I remember an anecdote that marked me, I who am very bad at forecasting: I was passing my driving license that spring (I was going to be 19) and I had bet a driving lesson with the driving school instructor that France was going to lose in Sofia. France lost, and I won a free lesson! More seriously, it was the demonstration that, according to the formula of Lampedusa, "everything changes so that nothing changes": the French team is better than ever, and it loses again in Sofia. On the French side, on the other hand, there was not much doubt, and it was a question of going to win in Bulgaria. Serious mistake. After a good start to the match, the Blues conceded a goal from a corner (another weak point) and played backwards, missing clear chances and conceding a second goal from a corner, while Bats remained on five clean sheets. L'Equipe also pointed to a disappointing Stopyra, which will be much better a year later in Mexico.

Soccernostalgia Question: At the end of the month, Platini with his club Juventus, experienced the Heysel disaster. Was this in some way, the reference point after which Platini was never the same player due to the tragedy?

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation):  That's what he said anyway. He was marked by the drama, of course, but also undoubtedly by his attitude that evening after his goal on penalty in particular, which he celebrated in a not very correct way, at the foot of the platform where the Italian supporters had died. But he had a difficult 1985-86 season and will arrive in Mexico injured, we will come back to this. He had known his peak of form and efficiency in 1984. From 1985, he will begin to decline.

Soccernostalgia Question: Henri Michel did not experiment much this season, trusting the team that had won the Euros. The main novelties included Bibard and Ayache in defense and the main beneficiay of the season, Stopyra upfront. While Specht, Brisson, Sénac and Anziani made fleeting appearances. What do you think of the experimentations?

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation): They were certainly insufficient, and the Blues will pay dearly for it in 1986 in Mexico. But, in the defense of Henri Michel, he had only one friendly match in the calendar of this 1984-85 season, and it was at the beginning of September against Inter. So little opportunity to experiment, except at the limit against Luxembourg in October. In fact, he found himself somewhat in the position of Roger Lemerre between 2000 and 2002, with a certain "senatorization" of executives who had their place assured except for injury. The lack of competition and especially of an alternative did not leave much choice to the coach, who preferred not to take any risks.

Soccernostalgia Question: What is your assessment of Henri Michel’s first season in charge?

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation): To complete what I said at the start, it is not obvious that we have gained from the change with the departure of Michel Hidalgo. Henri Michel does not have the same legitimacy as him, he is very close to the executives due to the age difference (eight years apart from Platini, who was his teammate in the selection) but did not know 1982 and 1984 in the field. He is not a very good Public speaker, he explained after the fact that press conferences made him uncomfortable, and he has no experience as a club coach. So many characteristics that we will find at Platini between 1988 and 1992 moreover, with the same result (but not the same players, except Amoros and Fernandez).
