I look back at the history of the Holland National Team players
who made a solitary appearance for the National Team in the 1990s.
The aim is to
look upon the reason, background and circumstances why a certain player was
selected for a match but never again.
Presentation
of the one-capped players for Holland/Netherlands in the decade of the 1990s:
24-year-old
defender Marcel Benjamin Peeper of
Twente Enschede made his only appearance vs. The Soviet Union on March 28th,
1990, at Kyyiv (1-2 loss). He was replaced in the 24th minute by René Eijkelkamp.
He played under
caretaker Manager Nol de Ruiter.
He made his
debut with Haarlem in 1985 and remained with the club until 1989.
He joined
Twente Enschede in 1989 and remained with the club until 1992.
The rest of his
career comprised of spells at Spart Rotterdam (1993), Belgian side Lokeren
(1993 thru 1997), Groningen (1997 thru 1999) and German side Wuppertaler SV
(1999/2000).

Erik Meijer
23-year-old
striker Erik Meijer of MVV made his only appearance
in a World Cup Qualifier vs. San Marino on March 24th, 1993, at Utrecht
(6-0 win).
He
was Dutch manager Dick Advocaat’a only one-cap wonder.
He started at
Fortuna Sittard (1988/89) before drifting from club to club: Belgian side
Antwerp (1989/90), Eindhoven (1989/90), back to Fortuna Sittard (1990-91), MVV
(1991 thru 1993), PSV Eindhoven (1993 thru 1995), German side FFC Uerdingen
(1995-96), German side Bayer Leverkusen (1996 thru 1999), English side
Liverpool (1999-2000), English side Preston North End (2000, on loan), German
side SV Hamburger (2000 thru 2003) and German side Alemania Aachen (2003 thru
2006).

Michel Kreek, Franciscus Maria 'Frank' Verlaat and Geradus Theodorus Thomas ‘Edwin’ Vurens
24-year-old Michel
Kreek (Padova), 26-year-old defender Frank Verlaat
(Auxerre) and 26-year-old striker Edwin Vurens (Twente Enschede) made their
only appearance in a friendly vs. Portugalon February 22nd, 1995, at
Eindhoven (0-1 loss).
Edwin
Vurens was replaced by Eric van de
Luer in the 46th minute.
The
trio were selected by Guus Hiddink, after the Ajax block (8 players) withdrew
from this match due to a busy schedule.
Michel Kreek started out with Ajax in 1989 and remained with the club
until November 1994 and joined Italian side Padova (1995/96).
The rest of his
career comprised of spells at Italian side Perugia (1996-97), Vitesse (1997
thru 2002), Greek side AEK Athens (2002 thru 2004) and Willem II (2004 thru
2006).
Frank
Verlaat started out at Ajax in 1986. He remained with the club until 1989
before joining Swiss side Lausanne (1989 thru 1992).
The rest of his
career comprised of spells at French side Auxerre (1992 thru 1995), German side
VfB Stuttgart (1995 thru 1999), back to Ajax (1999-2000), German side Werder
Bremen (2000 thru 2003), Austrian side FK Austria Vienna (2003-04) and Austrian
side Sturm Graz (2004 thru 2007).
Edwin Vurens
started out at Spart Rotterdam in 1987 and remained with the club until 1992.
He then joined Twente Enschede in 1992 and remained with the club until 1995.
The rest of his
career comprised of spells at Roda JC Kerkrade (1995-96), Swiss side St Gallen
(1996 thru 1998) and Swiss side Servette (1998 thru 2001).

John Fitzgerald
Veldman
28-year-old defender
John Fitzgerald Veldman of Sparta made his only
appearance in a friendly vs. Germany on April 24th, 1996, at Rotterdam
(0-1 loss).
He
was replaced by Jaap Stam in the 81st minute.
He
was selected by Guus Hiddink.
He
was a member of the 1996 Euros squad.
He
started out at PSV Eindhoven in the mid-1980s but left in 1989 after only a
single appearance for the senior side.
The rest of his
career comprised of spells at Willem II (1989 thru 1991), Sparta (1991 thru
1996), Ajax (1996-97), Vitesse (1997 thru 2000) and RBC Roosendaal (2000-01).

Jacobus Faber
27-year-old central
defender Ernst Anthonius Jacobus Faber of PSV
Eindhoven made his only appearance in a friendly vs. Mexico on January 24th,
1998, at Miami, USA (3-2 win). He replaced Winston Bogarde in the 58th
minute.
He
was Dutch manager Guus Hiddink’s last one-cap wonder.
He
made his debut with PSV in the 90s and remained with the club until 2004 before
retiring.
In
between he had loan spells at NEC (1990-91), Sparta (1991-92) and Groningen
(1994).

Franciscus Reuser
23-year-old
midfielder Martijn Franciscus Reuser of Vitesse
made his only appearance vs. Ghana on October 13th, 1998, at Arnhem (scoreless
tie).
He
replaced Jeffrey Talan
in the 46th minute.
He
was Dutch manager Frank Rijkaard’s first one-cap wonder.
He
started out at Ajax in 1993 and remained with the club until 1996. In between
he was loaned to Vitesse (1997 thru 1999) and Ipswich Town (2000).
The rest of his
career comprised of spells at English side Ipswich Town (2000 thru 2004),
Willem II (2004 thru 2006), RKC (2006 thru 2008) and NAC Breda (2008 thru
2010).
