The events took place at the end of (1981/82) season. Standard were League leaders with only two points more that rivals Anderlecht going into the last match of the season, on May 8th, 1982, vs., Waterschei.

The players suspended Standard Liège players led by captain Eric Gerets under the knowledge of manager Raymond Goethals approached certain Watershei players. They promised them their match victory bonuses if Waterschei players allowed them to win and become champions.

Standard won the match 3-1 and became champions.

Twenty-one months later at February 1984, prior to Belgium’s match with West Germany the scandal broke.

On February 29, 1984, Roger Petit and Raymond Goethals resigned. Léon Semmeling took over as manager of Standard.
