The Week that was (in Football (Soccer)): Review of the top Leagues in Europe-part 4 (Week of May 1-May 7, 2018)

Note:
The purpose of this section is to summarize the week in question, it is not meant to give a full statistical analysis of the matches.
We live in a viral age and all that information can be accessed.
I welcome all contributions from anyone, even for the Leagues that I did not cover.

I.  England

The week started with Liverpool’s Champions League match vs. AS Roma. Liverpool qualified to the Final for the first time since 2007, however, it got closer than expected and Liverpool’s continuous defensive frailties were exposed.
Stoke City were relegated after a decade in the Premier League.
The week ended with Chelsea getting in the fight for CL places with a win over Liverpool (1-0). Arsene Wenger also made his farewell at Emirates Stadium in a win (5-0) over Burnley.
But the biggest news that overshadowed all was off the field, as Sir Alex Ferguson had to undergo an emergency operation for a brain hemorrhage.
The football world was united in offering support for the veteran Manager.

II.  Italy

Roma fought bravely but were unable to overcome the (2-5) deficit vs. Liverpool in the CL Semifinal.
Two weeks ago it appeared that Napoli had the momentum to overtake a demoralized Juventus in the title run-in.
However, Napoli did not build on that momentum and Juventus’ two victories coupled with Napoli’s loss at Fiorentina, the previous week and a home tie with Torino (2-2) on Sunday virtually handed the title to Juventus for a seventh consecutive season.
Juventus now needs a single point to clinch the title officially.
On the Managerial front, it appears that Roberto Mancini is about to be unveiled as the National Team Manager in the coming weeks.

III.  Spain

The Week started with both Madrid clubs qualifying for European Cup finals. Real Madrid struggled at home but qualified for its third straight CL Final.
Atletico Madrid defeated Arsenal (1-0) to qualify for the Europa League Final.
The only talk during the rest of the week was of the ‘El Clasico’. The interest seemed overblown, as this was the most inconsequential Barcelona-Real Madrid match in years. However, the match itself was a different matter as all the tensions came to the fore and was as expected a fiery match ridden with fouls, drama and one sending off.
Cristiano Ronaldo was slightly injured and pulled off, as Zidane did not want to risk him before the CL final.
Barcelona march on hoping to finish the season undefeated.

IV.  Germany

Bayern Munich failed in its attempt to eliminate Real Madrid in the CL, but they fought bravely and were probably the better side.
Bayern goalkeeper Sven Ulreich made a huge blunder that gifted a goal to Real.
As far as the Bundesliga, it was another week another Bayern victory.
However, the headlines in their win over Koln (3-1) centered on Lewandowski’s anger at being substituted. This fueled the fire for an impending transfer out.

V.  France

The main interest in France centered on OM’s quest to reach the Europa League Final and all the nostalgia surrounding OM’s past in European Cups. They did so in dramatic fashion when Rolando scored in overtime against Salzburg.
The Final of the Europa League will be held in Lyon and this has further exasperated the tensions between Lyon and Marseille.
The National Team received bad news when on the same day that OM qualified for the Europa League Final, Arsenal’s French defender Laurent Koscielny suffered a bad injury in the Europa encounter vs. Atletico Madrid that ended his World Cup dreams.
