Republic of Ireland’s 1990
Adidas kit
The Republic of Ireland
made its World Cup in Italy in 1990. Naturally, the kit used for that
Tournament would be a classic.
During the 1988 Euros,
the Adidas designed Irish kit had two white stripes on the sleeves.
This design was to be
used for the last time on March 28, 1990, in Ireland’s friendly vs. Wales.
The new Ireland kit made
its debut on Ireland’s next friendly on April 25, 1990, at Dublin vs. the
Soviet Union (1-0).
Liam Brady would wear
this kit for his final match for the Republic on May 16, 1990, vs. Finland.
Republic of Ireland made
its World Cup debut with this kit vs. England (1-1 tie) in Cagliari on June 11,
1990.
Just days later on June
17, 1990, at Palermo vs. Egypt, the Irish played with their away kit in white
in a scoreless tie.
Incidentally, Ireland
would wear the white away kit three times during the World Cup, vs. Egypt,
Holland and Italy).
John Aldridge would score
his first hat trick for his Nation on October 17, 1990, in a UEFA European Championship
qualifier vs. Turkey (5-0).

Ireland would wear this
kit until the end of 1991/92 season. This included the World Cup qualifier on
May 26, 1992, at Dublin vs. Albania (2-0 win).
Ireland wore this green
shirt for the last time in the US Cup in June 1992 with numbers in the front
(vs. USA on May 30th and Italy on June 4th).
They would wear the white
away version of this kit (with numbers in front) on June 7th, 1992,
vs. Portugal for the US Cup.
From the 1992/93 season,
Ireland unveiled a new Adidas design, the Adidas Equipment design of having
three thick stripes on the left side of the shoulder and on the right side of
the shorts.
