Tournaments-Part 3 - Ciudad de Mexico Cup / Azteca 2000 (1985)

In June 1985, Mexico hosted two triangular tournaments within days of each other. The tournaments were as part of their preparations for the following year’s World Cup Finals that they would be hosting. As is always the case in these situations, the hosts (managed by the Yugoslav Bora Milutinovic), tended to look favorably to these events, since they need to test themselves in a competitive setting rather than the usual diet of friendly matches. Their main absentee was Striker Hugo Sanchez who remained in Spain.
The European invitees (Italy, England and West Germany) saw the benefit of acclimatizing to the local weather and social/dietary conditions and atmosphere. Though, dissenters point out that players require much needed rest after grueling seasons with their clubs.
Other Nations’ Managers (Henri Michel of France and Guy Thys of Belgium) took the opportunity to spy on future opponents as well as supervising facilities, etc.
The defending World Cup Champions Italy, under Enzo Bearzot, had arrived under a cloud of tragedy. In the preceding days, the Heysel Disaster involving Juventus and Liverpool had occurred with most of the victims being Italian.
The Italian squad still included many of the 1982 stars (Rossi, Scirea, Tardelli, Cabrini,..), through they were ageing and in decline. Many players from the recent Serie A Champions Verona were now part of the set up (Di Gennaro, Fanna, Tricella, Galderisi).
Just like the hosts, the Italians welcomed the somewhat competitive nature of this tournament to test themselves.
The English, under Bobby Robson, were comfortably at the top of their World Cup qualifying group and already had their sights set to next year’s World Cup. The squad included a number of newcomers from recent League Champions Everton.
The West Germans were the most reluctant of the participants. In fact West German manager Franz Beckenbauer had been opposed to this tour, but since arrangements had been made prior to his appointment the year before, they were obligated to participate. The Germans were due to arrive in Mexico on June 10th, just two days after the completion of the Bundesliga Season.
The competition would be divided into two tournaments. The First one called ‘Ciudad de Mexico Cup’ would take place from June 2 to June 9 and would involve the hosts, Italy and England.
The second one called ‘Azteca 2000’ would involve the Mexican hosts, England and West Germany.
Since Mexico and England were involved in both, the last match of the ‘Ciudad de Mexico Cup’ involving both teams would also serve as the first match of ‘Azteca 2000’.  All the matches would be played at Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium.
Prior to the actual tournament, the Italians were able to get some much-needed practice when they took on Mexican league side Puebla FC. The match ended in a tie with Galderisi scoring from a penalty kick for the Italians and Roberto Tricella being sent off.
The ‘Ciudad de Mexico Cup’ tournament proper took place on June 2nd, with the hosts Mexico taking on Italy.

For the Italians, the Juventus contingent did not start as they had joined the squad late (they had remained behind for the ill-fated Champions Cup Final). The match itself was a tight affair. Mexico struck first at the stroke of halftime. Manuel Negrete took a corner from the right that Javier Aguirre scored with a near post header.

Italy tied up the score early in the second half. In the 54th minute, Galderisi struck a volley that hit the post. Antonio Di Gennaro took the rebound, evaded one defender and struck a low shot past the goalkeeper.

Four days later, Italy and England met for the second match, just less than two weeks after the events of Heysel involving their clubs.
Just prior to kickoff, the two squads stood together as a mark of respect. The Italians made three changes from the Mexico match. Giovanni Galli started as goalkeeper ahead of Bordon, Vierchowod came in place of Righetti and Galderisi replaced Giordano as striker.
For the English, Everton defender Gary M. Stevens made his debut. The English included three Serie A players in their lineup: Ray Wilkins, Mark Hateley and Trevor Francis.
This was another tight match. The first half was in poor quality and neither side impressed, clearly the heat and altitude conditions affecting the Europeans.
French Manager Henri Michel bluntly described the match as being of mediocre quality.

The match came to life in the last 20 minutes. In the 73rd minute, Italian midfielder Salvatore Bagni received the ball at the right side edge of the box. He attempted to cross it into the goalmouth, Peter Shilton misjudged the flight of the ball and it chipped over him into the net.

Within minutes, England equalized through Mark Hateley who headed in following a cross from the left by substitute John Barnes.
Near the end of the match, Gary Stevens was adjudged to have fouled Vierchowod in the box. Alessandro Altobelli scored from the ensuing penalty kick. Despite the Italian victory, many observers felt the penalty kick decision was harsh and a draw would have been a fairer result.

For his part, Bobby Robson emphasized on the difficulties with the heat and altitude experienced by his squad and also the fact the Italians were better conditioned since they were playing their third match.
The Italians departed to take part in the final rounds of Coppa Italia.
On June 9th, Mexico hosted England in a match that, as stated earlier, counted for both triangular tournaments.
England made some changes from their previous match. Gary Bailey, Viv Anderson, Glenn Hoddle, Terry Fenwick, Dave Watson and John Barnes came into the side. Robson rested Shilton, Stevens, Steven, Wright, Butcher and Waddle. English substitutes Kerry Dixon and Peter Reid would also make their National team debuts in the match.

For the match itself, England had more possession, but Mexico struck first and won. In the 20th minute, Miguel Espana received the ball in the middle and laid it on for Flores on the right side that struck with an angled shot.

It was generally a more open attacking game than the previous two matches. Viv Anderson scored on a header for England, which was called off after a push on Mexican goalkeeper Larios.
This match was England’s third straight defeat, including the Rous Cup defeat vs. Scotland in May (The first such occurrence since 1959).
After this match, the Serie A based English players (Wilkins, Hateley, Francis) left to rejoin their squads in time for the final stages of Coppa Italia.
Three days later, the English took on the West Germans for the second match of the ‘Azteca 2000’.
The Germans had only arrived 48 hours before the match. They were ill prepared and not yet acclimatized to the weather conditions.
This would go a long way to explain their poor displays during this tournament.
For the English, Shilton was back in the net, defenders Stevens, Wright and Butcher were back in as was winger Chris Waddle.
Peter Reid, Gary Lineker and Kerry Dixon started in place of the departed Serie A based trio.

The Germans were also without Serie A based duo of Captain Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (Inter) and Hans-Peter Briegel (Verona), who were not released because of Coppa Italia commitments.
Karlheinz Forster also missed the Tour due to injury; Bayern Munich Captain Klaus Aughentaler was called up as his replacement.

The better-prepared English took the lead in the 34th minute. One of the best English players that day, Glenn Hoddle, sent a cross into the box, Dixon chested it down for Robson to volley home.
Just before halftime, in the 41st minute, Mark Wright fouled Uwe Rahn in the box and the Germans were awarded a spot kick. Peter Shilton came to England’s rescue and saved Andreas Brehme’s effort.

In the 54th minute, Terry Butcher dispossessed Aughentaler and ran towards the goal. Schumacher knocked the ball from Butcher’s feet, but Dixon immediately tapped in the loose ball into the net.
Dixon scored England’s third and his personal second in the 67th minute. John Barnes, once again after coming on as substitute, crossed from the left side and Dixon’s header lobbed over Schumacher.

The tournament’s closing match pitted Mexico vs. the West Germans. Beckenbauer rested Schumacher and started Uli Stein in goal. Rudi Voeller and Bayern Munich debutant Ludwig Koegl came into the side replacing Littbarski and Berthold.
The Germans still reeling from their heavy defeat days earlier were behind as early as the third minute.

Mexican captain Tomas Boy took a corner from the left. Uli Stein misjudged his exit and failed to connect with the ball. The ball went past him to an unmarked Manuel Negrete who headed home at the far post.
Mexico could have gone further ahead in the 15th minute, but Flores missed his spot kick.
Early in the second half, Boy got the ball in the middle and immediately released Flores who shot past Stein.

The Mexicans won the ‘Azteca 2000’ tournament and gave positive performances despite the pressure from their own media. They gained valuable experience for next year’s World Cup. Not much could be analyzed from the Europeans’ performances. They either had Heysel still in their mind or just would have preferred to be on vacation.

Notes:
1-There have been doubts about the fact that these were two tournaments or one. Many sources have referred to all these matches as Azteca 2000.
It is possible that due to scheduling conflicts (Italians leaving early, Germans coming late), the tournaments were divided. Most likely this was devised to be one proper tournament that would have included all four teams.

2-On June 16th, 1985, the English also played USA in a friendly in Los Angeles and won 5-0. Gary Lineker and Kerry Dixon each scored twice in that match.

  1. That Mexico versus England game must be the only time that one game was part of two different tournaments.
