1990s
The
sides would meet one another only twice in this decade (three time including
Slovakia).
The
first one would be in the 1990 World Cup, where Italians won on home soil (2-0)
with a memorable strike from Roberto Baggio that is often referenced as one of
the greatest goals ever.
This
was Italy’s first win over Czechoslovakia since 1953.
This
was Italy’s first match vs. Czechoslovakia in the Finals of a World Cup, since
the 1934 World Cup Final itself also at Rome.
The
next encounter in the decade would be during the 1996 Euro Finals in Liverpool.
This would be the first time the sides had met in a neutral setting.
By
now Czechoslovakia had been split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
It
was the Czech Republic that won (2-1) with the likes of Pavel Nedved catching
the eye of Italian club recruiters (he would eventually join Lazio before
ending up at Juventus).
In
1998, Italy would defeat Slovakia (3-0) in a friendly in Catania.
