April
The
European Champions France came away with a scoreless draw at Yugoslavia.
Italy
defeated Portugal in a friendly that was its 200th official
international match at home.
Portugal’s
Rui Aguas, son of Jose Aguas, made his debut for Portugal.
Bulgaria
defeated East Germany with only a few minutes left.
Uruguay
qualified for the World Cup after defeating Chile.
Hungary
qualified for the World Cup after defeating Austria at Vienna (3-0) and
maintained its 100% percent record (having won all its five qualifiers).
Austria’s
Hans Krankl asked to be left out from the National team afterwards, effectively
retiring from the national team.
Brazil
(without its European based stars) played its first match of the year with
Evaristo de Macedo at the helm. His turbulent short spell was exemplified by
losing at home to Peru a few days later.
West
Germany won its fifth straight qualifier and heavily defeated Czechoslovakia in
Prague (5-1). Lothar Matthaus scored for the first time for West Germany after
being five years in the national team set up.
Wales
defeated Spain in a qualifier, where Mark Hughes scored one of his most
memorable goals. Spain goalkeeper Luis Arconada played his last match ever for
Spain.
