1990s
Just
a few months after the 1989 friendly, the sides met for the Third Place match
in the 1990 World Cup in Bari. In a match that marked Peter Shilton’s
retirement, Roberto Baggio scored a goal that was clearly offside, while
another legitimate Italian goal by Nicola Berti was waived off as offside.
The
sides met three times in 1997, twice in World Cup qualifiers and once as part
of ‘Le Tournoi’ in France.
Italy
were victorious in Wembley, in Matthew Le Tissier’s last match for England.
English based Gianfranco Zola scored for Italy.
England
were victorious in June, and a
scoreless tie in Rome in October earned England top spot in their
qualification group (Italy later qualified through the playoffs).
