International Season 1986/87, Part 3 (October 1986)

October

Poland started under new Manager Wojciech Lazarek by tying North Korea (2-2) at home.
Italy also started under new Manager Azeglio Vicini and defeated Greece (2-0).
France realized the depth of its problems after a loss at home vs. The impressive Soviets (0-2).
Portugal started its first match under new Manager Rui Seabra. This was also the first match after the World Cup squad’s Players’ strike. As a result the squad contained many new and inexperienced players.
England defeated Northern Ireland (3-0) with Gary Lineker scoring twice. Northern Ireland Manager Billy Bingham had gotten married earlier in the day.
Lothar Matthaus was sent off in West Germany’s unexpected defeat vs. Austria (1-4).
Ivica Osim took charge of his first sole match as Yugolvavia Manager (Yugoslavia 4-Turkey 0).
