1970s
The
most historically important matches between the Natiosn took place in the year
1973 during the World Cup Qualifiers. By now, Poland had become ome of the best
teams in Europe, while England were declining.
The
first qualifier on June 6th, 1973 at Chorzów, saw Poland win (2-0)
to virtually end England’s (wearing yellow) hopes for World Cup qualification.
England’s
Alan Ball was sent off, while Poland’s Lubanski was injured from a foul by
England’s Roy McFarland. Lubanski’s injury ruled him out of the 1974 World Cup.
This
remains Poland’s only win over England to date.
The
return qualifier at Wembley on October 17th, 1973, ended in a (1-1)
tie that sealed England’s elimination. It was also the end of the road for Alf
Ramsey who was replaced in the coming months after an over a decade at the
helm.
The
best Polish side in Histiry finished Third at the World Cup in West Germany in
1974.

1980s
It
took over a decade for the sides to meet again. This time in Mexico during the
1986 World Cup. The match marked Gary Lineker’s hat trick that revived
England’s hopes.
This
was their first win over Poland in twenty years.
This
was the only match between the Nations at a Neutral venue and at the Finals of
a major Tournanent.
Three
years later in 1989 the sides were grouped once more in a World Cup qualifying
Group. This time the English edged ahead, Lineker scored once more in a (3-0)
win at Wembley and the return leg ended in a scoreless tie and England
qualified for the World Cup.
