International Season 1978/79, Part 9 (May 1979)


May

Argentina and its new star Diego Maradona started touring Europe. First on the agenda was a replay of the previous year’s World Cup Final.
The British Home Championship took place with the highlight being England’s (3-1) victory over Scotland.
France defeated USA (6-0) playing on a synthetic field.
West germany earned its first away points in its group by defeating Wales (2-0) at Wrexham.
Poland defeated Holland (2-0) in its Group.
Tsvetan Ilchev managed Bulgaria again in their qualifier win over the Republic of Ireland.
Brazil, making its first appearance of the year, defeated Paraguay (6-0) and defeated Uruguay (5-1) at the end of the month.
Ferenc Kovacs managed Hungary for the last time as they held USSR at Tblissi (2-2) in a Euro qualifier.
