For this interview, I start a new project as I look back at the Spain national tem history under Ladislao Kubala, season by season, starting with the 1969/70 season.
This will be a semi-regular and continuous series.

Question: How was the decision
taken to appoint Kubala as National Team Manager. Was it the failure to qualify
for the 1970 World Cup?
Mr. Josele Carbonell Response: (English Translation: The main supporter for
the hiring of Mr. Kubala for the National Team in June 1969 once the official
season was over, was José Luis Costa, president of the FEF at that time.
Despite the many detractors he had in the Federation itself and in the upper
echelons of the Spanish Sports Department.

West Germany, Kubala once more handed International debuts five players: Sol,

Mr. Josele Carbonell Response: (English Translation: As I have said before,
Lora is thanks to Mr. Kubala for playing in Seville. The rest were defensive

to the dangerous German forwards. One of Mr. Kubala's qualities was knowing the
players a lot, since he not only saw them in league games, but he even attended

Mr. Josele Carbonell Response: (English Translation: About the game itself,

and from that moment on, Mr. Kubala's men limited themselves to preserving the
result without making an excessive effort to seek a better result.

consensus about Kubala and his tactics at the end of this first season?
Mr. Josele Carbonell Response: (English Translation:During these first four matches
of the hope of Spanish football, Mr. Kubala, the label of considering our coach

tied with future World runner-up champions after trailing 0-2 and we beat
modest Switzerland at home. On the bulky victory against Finland in an official

contra el Hannover SV (clasificado por aquel entonces en los últimos puestos de
la Bundesliga) y los dos partidos Sub-23 contra Italia fueron convocados en las
diferentes convocatorias 51 jugadores para afrontar esos siete partidos.
El
señor Kubala quería jugadores que dieran el máximo de si y que se sintieran
orgullosos el jugar en la Selección. Con sacrificio y trabajo, ya vendrían los
frutos. De hecho, de los diez primeros partidos como seleccionador, solo perdió
uno. El más crucial y el que nos impidió asistir a la fase final de la Eurocopa
de Bélgica en 1972. Fue en Moscú contra la selección soviética el 30 de Mayo de
1971. Pero eso ya es otra historia… )
