The Soccernostalgia Interview-Part 100- Interview with Italian Author and former Freelance Journalist Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota on Vittorio Pozzo’s era as Italy National Team Manager, 1940 /41 and 1941/42 Season.

For this interview, I continue to look back at Vittorio Pozzo’s era as Italy National Team Manager, with the 1940/41 and 1941/42 Seasons.

This will be a semi-regular and continuous series.

The Interview in in English as well as Italian.

The Interviewee is:

Italian Author Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota is a former freelance journalist in Biella (Italy), living in Odense (Denmark) from 2013, working as a language teacher.

He is the author of “Danmark (1908-2018)” chronicling the history of the Danish National Team.

Soccernostalgia Question: By 1940, the World was plunged into a World War and International Football was an afterthought. What were the state of the affairs of the National Team in the beginning of 1940/41 with Vittorio Pozzo at the helm?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: A situation of total uncertainty. Seven months passed from May to December 1940 before Italy managed to take the field for an international match. The Italian championship was played regularly, but communications became increasingly difficult. Furthermore, there was a generational change, but young people were often blocked by military commitments.

Soccernostalgia Question: As most potential opponents were invaded by the Nazis or now enemies (France, England, etc), this limited matches only against Axis Allies. How did Pozzo deal with this new reality?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response:
Taking note of it in a seraphic manner and trying to convey - as much as possible - serenity. It couldn't have gone any other way. In an article in La Stampa he wrote that the match against Hungary, Italy's ally, was one of the few possible at that time and he hoped - reading between the lines - that after the war, it would be possible to compete against everyone again.

Soccernostalgia Question: How did Pozzo continue his task as National Team Manager without regular International matches for some time?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response:  He simply followed the form of his players when he attended championship matches as a journalist, which, let's not forget, was still his main profession. Too old to be called back to the front, he left Turin to travel throughout Italy, paid by the newspaper he worked for, attending as many races as possible.

Soccernostalgia Question: The first and only match of the 1940/41 season was at Genova vs. Hungary, on December 1, 1940. The match ended as a (1-1) tie. Pozzo experimented in goal with Pietro Ferrari in goal, as well as Olmi and Trevisan. How was this result viewed by the Press?

Insomma, tanti giudizi severi, senza attenuanti.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: It was the first time ever that Italy played a match in a state of war. In the First World War, in which the country only participated from May 1915, the Azzurri had stopped from January 1915 to 1920. Among other things, it was not possible to play abroad, given that Italy did not grant expatriation permission to players of military age.

The press did not grant Pozzo many extenuating circumstances: there were those who criticized the lack of training, asking for the Azzurri to gather at least twice a month at the federal technical center in Florence, without considering that the championship and Italian Cup calendar did not allow it . The Ferrari debutant was considered among the best on the pitch, while Trevisan, despite the goal, was not considered up to par with his predecessors Meazza and Ferrari. Piola was not considered fit. In short, many severe judgments, without mitigating circumstances.

Soccernostalgia Question: In this match vs. Hungary, 1938 World Cup Champion Ugo Locatelli played his last match for Italy. How is career with the Azzurri regarded?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Locatelli played a good match, he was among the best on the pitch, but strangely, after the war, he was no longer called up to the national team. And he was only 24 years old. He probably struggled to adapt to the new game systems and at Juventus (the team he joined in 1941) he would no longer be at the same level as when he played for Inter.

However, he had a bright "second" career as a youth sector coach, discovering many talents.

Soccernostalgia Question: As the War continued, there was a gap of almost a year and a half for Italy’s next matches in April 1942. How did Pozzo conduct National team duties during this time as far as preparations and scouting, etc?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Practically non-existent preparation, given the difficulties in gathering the players at the height of the war. Scouting, as mentioned, was combined with his activity as a journalist, thanks to which he followed the Italian championship every Sunday.

Forse per necessità, Pozzo sperimentò e fece debuttare in Nazionale Luigi Griffanti, Giuseppe Grezar, Ezio Loik, Guglielmo Gabetto e Valentino Mazzola. .

Soccernostalgia Question: For the 1941/42 season, Italy’s first match was a friendly match against Croatia at Genova on April 5, 1942. Perhaps out of necessity, Pozzo experimented and gave International debuts to Luigi Griffanti, Giuseppe Grezar, Ezio Loik, Guglielmo Gabetto and Valentino Mazzola. Italy won (4-0) in convincing fashion. What were the lessons from this match and new players?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: It was Croatia that offered Italy the possibility of a friendly match. The created players came from Zagreb and Ljubljana and the journey to Genoa was not impossible. Pozzo had a plan: to build his new team with a block of players belonging to the same club. For this reason he was convincing the president of Torino, Ferruccio Novo, to bring some of the best Italian talents into his club: Loik and Mazzola, both from Venezia, Grezar from Triestina. Gabetto had been "discarded" by Juventus and at the end of the war Torino would also send goalkeeper Bacigalupo, Maroso, Ballarin, Ossola, Menti and Rigamonti to the national team.

The 4-0 defeat to Croatia was without history: the gap between the two teams was too wide. Just a good training test for the Azzurri.

Soccernostalgia Question: The Mazzola-Loik combination would soon join Torino and would transform the club to ‘Grande Torino’. Was it self-evident at this point in 1942 as to how talented and influential this duo would be?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Not at the moment, but it was clear that they were two great promises, because winning an Italian Cup with a team that was certainly not as renowned as Venezia was no small feat.

Soccernostalgia Question: Italy’s next and last match of the 1941/42 season and in fact Italy’s last match until the end of the War, was two weeks later at Milano vs. Spain on April 19, 1942. Italy won (4-0) once again with Mazzola and Loik scoring. Was there a belief that the National team was competitive or were people conscious of the realities of the War masking any objective judgement of the team’s potential?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: We were optimistic but circumstances did not allow us to look too far ahead. The newspapers spoke of the team being adjusted, of good performances against Croatia and Spain, but without having certainties about the next World Cup and Olympics it was difficult to make predictions. Furthermore, the 1942-43 Italian championship, which ended with great difficulty, was the last before the three-year suspension.

Soccernostalgia Question: In this match against Spain, another two 1938 World Cup Champions, Alfredo Foni and Michele Andreolo, also played their last matches for Italy. How were their careers for the Azzurri regarded?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Excellent, both for Foni and for Andreolo. Foni finished with 23 appearances, one world title and one Olympic title, before closing (in 1947) and embarking on a good career as a coach, with two national titles with Inter and the role of Azzurri selector. Andreolo, born in Uruguay to an Italian family, was a fighter, someone who never backed down. Probably one of the best Italian defenders of all time, very strong on high balls. He never left Italy again, despite the war.

Soccernostalgia Question: As far as these 1938 World Cup Champions like Locatelli, Foni and Andreolo. They were still relatively young at this point, were there careers with the Azzurri curtailed because of the realities of the War?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Certainly, even if Serie A footballers enjoyed a particular "status" and were left at home, without being sent to the front. Some players at the end of the 1930s no longer played for the Azzurri for age reasons, others due to the arrival of a valiant new generation, the one that gave shape to the "Grande Torino", champion of Italy 5 times in a row between 1943 and 1949.

Soccernostalgia Question: Piola, Biavati and Rava were still active, soon to be complemented with the ‘Grande Torino’ players. Did Pozzo express that in the future with the War over, he could build a new team with the new players?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Yes, the three "survivors" of 1938 were also helped by the fact that they did not have very serious physical problems, especially Piola, who despite having inevitably become slower, still had an extraordinary athletic structure. Pozzo counted on them as "veterans", but he clearly had a plan in mind: to bring the Torino block to the national team.

Soccernostalgia Question: The Allies invasion of Italy in 1943 effectively stopped any further International matches until the end of the war. How did Pozzo continue with his work?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: He took a break in the period 1943-44, also because it was practically impossible to travel by train from the North to the Central-South of Italy. He retired from some relatives near Biella and secretly collaborated with the partisans, helping to make some of them flee the country.

Soccernostalgia Question: This is speculation, but how do you think Italy would have fared in the 1942 and 1946 World Cups had there been no War?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Very good, but I don't like to make imaginative considerations. On principle. I hate “fantasy football”. Could Italy have become world champions twice more? Who knows? These are just hypotheses.

Soccernostalgia Question: In closing, what was the state of the National Team at the end of the War in 1945 and what was Pozzo’s role and status by the end of the War?

E solo uno come Pozzo, tecnico esperto, poliglotta e abile nelle relazioni diplomatiche, poteva farlo

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Pozzo immediately takes back the baton of command in an extremely difficult situation. Italy lost the war due to the unfortunate choices of the fascist regime and the Italian players, when they play abroad for the first time, even in neutral Switzerland, will be greeted by whistles, insults and throwing objects. We also needed to work on this: to make it clear that the footballers had nothing to do with political choices and to insist on becoming accepted again by the international sporting public. And only someone like Pozzo, an expert technician, polyglot and skilled in diplomatic relations, could do it
