-Match number 674 for England and number 575 for Germany.

-This was the first meeting between England and a unified Germany since 1938.

-This was the 20th meeting between the two nations.

-This was England’s first loss under Graham Taylor after 12 matches and the first loss since July 7, 1990 when England lost to Italy in World Cup 1990 third place match.

-Germany’s last victory at Wembley was a 2-1 win on October 13, 1982. German captain Lothar Matthaus was the only player from both sides who played in that match.

-England would not defeat Germany until June 17, 2000 when they defeated Germany 1-0 in the 2000 UEFA European Championship.

-The first match between the two nations since 1990 World Cup Semifinal.

-For Germany, 8 players who played in the 1990 Semifinal were present, while Moeller,
Kopke and Bein were on the bench that day.
For England only 4 players remained: Parker, Platt, Steven and Lineker. While Woods, Dorigo and Seaman remained on the bench that day.

-This is the first time Germany has worn its green colored (away) uniform since that 1990 semifinal vs England.

-For most of 1991, Chris Waddle and Peter Beardsley were out of favor with England manager Taylor.
The exclusion of Waddle, who was having an excellent season with French club Olympique Marseille, baffled France manager Michel Platini. He claimed that not only would Waddle be an automatic selection (were he French), but he would remain in the team indefinitely.

-During the off-season German captain Lothar Matthaus nearly joined Real Madrid, but Inter refused his demand.

On September 7, 1991, Germany announced that Rudi Voeller, Thomas Helmer and Stefan Kuntz would be out injured.
Stefan Kuntz injured himself as he slipped while he was getting off his club Kaiserslautern’s team bus before a league match with Bayern Munich.

-The German squad selected for this match was announced on September 2, 1991
