Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): La France a participé aux Jeux olympiques de 1984 à Los Angeles, quelques mois seulement après avoir remporté l’Euro. Quelles étaient les attentes du Public et de la Presse?

Soccernostalgia Question: France participated in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, just a couple of months after winning the UEFA European Championships. What were the expectations from the Public and the Press?

Matthieu Delahais Response: Il n’y avait pas de grandes attentes pour le public. Les amateurs de foot suivaient l’équipe de France A et les récents résultats les avaient comblés, avec un premier titre remporté en juin. L’impact des jeux était beaucoup moins important que celui de l’Euro, qui avait eu lieu en France. Et avec le décalage horaire, les matchs se déroulaient la nuit. Je pense que l’intérêt n'est venu que lorsque la France est arrivée dans le dernier carré.

Matthieu Delahais Response: There were no high expectations for the audience. Football fans followed the France A team and the recent results had filled them, with a first title won in June. The impact of the games was much less than that of the Euros, which took place in France. And with the jet lag, the matches took place at night. I think the interest only came when France got to the last four.

Soccernostalgia Question: Can you describe Henri Michel’s trajectory from retirement as a player in 1982 to Olympics Team Manager?

Matthieu Delahais Response: Henri Michel a pris sa retraite sportive à la fin de la saison 1982. Il a passé toute sa carrière à Nantes (trois titres de champion, une coupe de France). Il a joué en Bleu de 1967 à 1980. Il compte 58 sélections pour 4 buts et a participé à la coupe du monde 1978. Il embraye rapidement avec le rôle de sélectionneur de l’équipe de France olympique.

Matthieu Delahais Response: Henri Michel retired from sport at the end of the 1982 season. He spent his entire career in Nantes (three league titles, one French Cup). He played in Blue from 1967 to 1980. He has 58 selections for 4 goals and participated in the 1978 World Cup. He quickly took on the role of coach of the French Olympic team.

Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): Henri Michel a déjà été désigné pour prendre la relève en tant que sélectionneur de l'équipe nationale à l'automne. Comment a-t-il abordé ces Jeux Olympiques avec le plus gros travail qui l'attendait ?

Soccernostalgia Question: Henri Michel was already designated to take over as the National Team Manager in the Fall. How did he approach these Olympics with the bigger job just waiting for him?

Matthieu Delahais Response: L’édition des Jeux de 1984 était particulière pour deux raisons. Tout d’abord, alors que jusqu’en 1980 la compétition était réservée aux amateurs, lors de l’épreuve de Los Angeles, elle s’est ouverte aux professionnels, sous réserve qu’ils n’aient jamais joué en coupe du monde avec leur sélection. La seconde est que suite au boycott des Américains lors des Jeux olympiques de Moscou en 1980, l’URSS a refusé de participer à cette épreuve. La Tchécoslovaquie (médaille d’or en 1980) et la RDA (vainqueur en 1976) ont suivi le mouvement. Et le niveau de la compétition en a été affecté. Henri Michel et les Français ont peut-être pensé qu’il y avait une carte à jouer à ce moment.

L’objectif pour Henri Michel était de se préparer au rôle de sélectionneur national de l’équipe A. Ces deux années lui ont permis d’apprendre le métier. Mais comme l’équipe A était encore au sommet, son expérience avec les olympiques ne lui sans pas permis de découvrir des candidats potentiels pour l’après 1984.

Matthieu Delahais Response: The 1984 edition of the Games was special for two reasons. First of all, whereas until 1980 the competition was reserved for amateurs, during the event in Los Angeles, it opened up to professionals, provided that they had never played in the World Cup with their selection. The second is that following the American boycott of the Moscow Olympics in 1980, the USSR refused to participate in this event. Czechoslovakia (gold medal in 1980) and the GDR (winner in 1976) followed suit. And the level of competition was affected. Henri Michel and the French may have thought there was a card to play at this time.

The objective for Henri Michel was to prepare for the role of national coach of the A team. These two years allowed him to learn the trade. But as the A team was still at the top, its experience with the Olympics did not allow it to discover potential candidates for after 1984.

Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): Qui étaient les joueurs clés de l'équipe de France olympique ?

Soccernostalgia Question: Who were the key players for the French Olympic Team?

Matthieu Delahais Response: Il n’y avait pas vraiment de joueurs clés. Ce qui faisait la force de cette équipe, c’était la volonté de réussir un gros coup ensemble. Tous ces joueurs n’avaient pu accéder à l’équipe de France A et ils voulaient montrer leur valeur. William Ayache explique « Nous, on était un peu l’équipe B et on n’avait jamais rien gagné. Automatiquement on ne voulait pas être ridicule, on voulait aller loin. Je crois que ça nous a mis une pression supplémentaire. »

Après, s’il faut vraiment mettre des joueurs en avant, je citerai sans doute Daniel Xuereb. Il a fini meilleur buteur (5 réalisations), mais a surtout marqué dans tous les matchs à élimination directe. Je pense aussi que le gardien Albert Rust, qui était présent à l’Euro en tant que troisième portier, a dû apporter une expérience de gagneur acquise avec l‘équipe A.

Matthieu Delahais Response: There weren't really any key players. What made the strength of this team was the desire to achieve a big hit together. All these players had not been able to join the France A team and they wanted to show their value. William Ayache explains “We were a bit of the B team and we had never won anything. Automatically we didn't want to be ridiculous, we wanted to go far. I think that put extra pressure on us. »

Afterwards, if it is really necessary to put players forward, I will no doubt quote Daniel Xuereb. He finished top scorer (5 goals), but mostly scored in all knockout matches. I also think that goalkeeper Albert Rust, who was present at the Euros as third goalkeeper, must have brought some winning experience acquired with the A team.

Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): Au premier tour, bien qu'invaincue, la France a eu des difficultés. Une victoire contre la Norvège et deux matchs nuls contre le Qatar et le Chili. Pourquoi la France a-t-elle eu du mal dans les premiers tours ?

Soccernostalgia Question: In the first round, despite being undefeated, France had difficulties. A win over Norway and two ties vs. Qatar and Chile. Why did France struggle in the early rounds?

Matthieu Delahais Response: Les matchs du premier tour se sont déroulés à Annapolis, à 5000 kms de Los Angeles. Les joueurs ont sans doute eu du mal à se mettre dans le cadre d’une compétition officielle. « On n’avait pas la sensation d’être aux JO », avoue Dominique Bijotat. Les Français ont profité de cette ville maritime et de ses distractions (notamment la pêche au gros). Les rencontres ont donc été compliquées à gérer. Ce n’est qu’une fois cette phase de poules passée, que l’équipe est partie à Los Angeles et que les joueurs se sont vraiment retrouvés dans une ambiance olympique.

Matthieu Delahais Response: The first round matches took place in Annapolis, 5000 kms from Los Angeles. The players undoubtedly struggled to put themselves in the framework of an official competition. "We didn't feel like we were at the Olympics," admitted Dominique Bijotat. The French took advantage of this maritime city and its entertainment (notably deep-sea fishing). The meetings were therefore complicated to manage. It was only after this group stage that the team left for Los Angeles and the players really found themselves in an Olympic atmosphere.

Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): En quart de finale, la France a battu l'Egypte (2-0) mais a perdu Touré sur blessure. Comment la France s'est-elle ensuite adaptée tactiquement à sa défaite ?

Soccernostalgia Question: In the quarterfinals, France defeated Egypt (2-0) but lost Toure to injury. How did France adapt to his loss afterwards in tactical terms?

Matthieu Delahais Response: José Touré était sans doute le joueur le plus doué de l’équipe. Il comptait d’ailleurs trois sélections et un but avec la grande équipe de France. Il avait participé à tous les matchs jusqu’à sa blessure, aligné aux côtés de Xuereb et Brisson (qui a remplacé Garande blessé lors de la deuxième rencontre). Mais à partir de la demi-finale, Henri Michel a changé son système en ne jouant plus qu’avec deux attaquants (le duo lensois composé de Xuereb et Brisson) et a renforcé son milieu de terrain en le passant à quatre joueurs au match suivant et même cinq lors de la finale.

Matthieu Delahais Response: José Touré was arguably the most gifted player on the team. He also had three selections and a goal with the great French team. He had played in every game until his injury, lining up alongside Xuereb and Brisson (who replaced the injured Garande in the second game). But from the semi-final, Henri Michel changed his system by only playing with two attackers (the Lensois duo made up of Xuereb and Brisson) and strengthened his midfield by passing it to four players in the following match. and even five in the final.

Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): La demi-finale contre la Yougoslavie a été un match divertissant qui a été remporté en prolongation (4-2). La Yougoslavie était une équipe solide avec de nombreux Internationaux A. Était-ce peut-être le meilleur match de la France dans la compétition ?

Soccernostalgia Question: The semifinals vs. Yugoslavia was an entertaining match that was won in overtime (4-2). Yugoslavia was a strong squad with many full Internationals. Was this perhaps France’s best match in the competition?

Matthieu Delahais Response: La Yougoslavie était un très sérieux postulant au titre. « Ils avaient quand même dix joueurs qui avaient participé à l’Euro 84, se rappelle William Ayache. On les avait vus sur la côte Est, ils se la racontaient un peu. » D’un point de vue résultat, c’est sans doute le match le plus abouti des Bleus. Mais si on regarde le déroulé du match, c’est un peu différent. La France a vite mené 2-0 (grâce à des buts de Bijotat et Jeannol dans le premier quart d’heure), mais les Yougoslaves ont réussi à égaliser alors qu’ils se trouvaient en infériorité numérique. Ils ont même terminé le match à neuf et pourtant les Français ont dû attendre les prolongations pour faire la différence.

Matthieu Delahais Response: Yugoslavia was a very serious contender for the title. “They still had ten players who had participated in Euro 84, remembered William Ayache. We had seen them on the East Coast, they talked about it a bit. From a result point of view, this is undoubtedly the most successful match for the Blues. But if we look at the course of the match, it is a little different. France quickly led 2-0 (thanks to goals from Bijotat and Jeannol in the first quarter of an hour), but the Yugoslavs managed to equalize when they were outnumbered. They even finished the match at nine and yet the French had to wait for extra time to make the difference.

Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): La France a remporté la médaille d'or en battant le Brésil (avec le jeune Dunga) en finale (2-0). Quels sont les souvenirs de ce match pour vous ?

Soccernostalgia Question: Franc won the Gold Medal by defeating Brazil (including a young Dunga) in the Final (2-0). What are the memories of this match for you?

Matthieu Delahais Response: Je n‘avais que 9 ans et pour une raison que j'ai oubliée, j’avais dormi avec mon frère chez mes grands-parents la nuit de la finale. Je me souviens juste que mon grand-père était venu nous réveiller vers 4 ou 5 heures du matin pour qu’on puisse regarder le match. J’ai le souvenir d’avoir été heureux de la victoire, mais je crois aussi que je trouvais cela normal. C’est l’un de mes premiers souvenirs de football et je pensai naïvement à l’époque qu’il était normal que la France gagne. Ce n’est que lors de la coupe du monde 1986 que j’ai découvert le goût amer de la défaite.

Matthieu Delahais Response: I was only 9 years old and for some reason Me and my brother had slept at my grandparents the night of the final. I just remember my grandfather coming to wake us up around 4 or 5 in the morning so we could watch the game. I remember being happy with the victory, but I also think that I thought it was normal. It is one of my earliest football memories and I naively thought at the time that it was normal for France to win. It was not until the 1986 World Cup that I discovered the bitter taste of defeat.

Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): Le duo Lensois Brisson et Xuereb ont été les héros des JO. Selon vous, quels autres joueurs méritent d'être reconnus dans cette aventure ?

Soccernostalgia Question: The RC Lens duo Brisson and Xuereb were the heroes of the Olympics. Which other players do you feel deserved recognition in this adventure?

Matthieu Delahais Response: Je pense que c’était un groupe de joueurs revanchards, qui n’avaient pas eu leur chance en A et qui voulaient prouver leur valeur. Je ne suis pas sûr qu’on puisse mettre des joueurs en avant. Leur force, c’était vraiment le groupe plus que les individualités.

Matthieu Delahais Response: I think it was a group of vengeful players, who hadn't had their chance in A and wanted to prove their worth. I'm not sure we can put players forward. Their strength was really the group more than the individuals.

Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): En ce qui concerne les joueurs, à part William Ayache (jusqu'à Mexico 1986), aucun des joueurs ne s'est imposé avec l'équipe nationale. Une poignée de sélections pour la plupart et pas beaucoup plus. Jose Touré est une exception, sinon pour les blessures, il aurait peut-être mieux réussi. À votre avis, pourquoi ce groupe n'a-t-il pas franchi le palier ?

Soccernostalgia Question: As far as the players, apart from William Ayache (until Mexico 1986), none of the players established themselves with the National Team. A handful of selections for most and not much more. Jose Toure is an exception, if not for injuries, he may have been more successful. Why do you think this group failed to take the step above?

Matthieu Delahais Response: Tout simplement parce que c’était l’équipe B. Ces joueurs étaient à leurs limites. Ils n’avaient pas le potentiel pour aller plus haut et prétendre à l’équipe de France A, ou alors dans un rôle de remplaçants. Et puis, il faut aussi reconnaître que l’équipe de France A de ces années était à un sacré niveau et qu’il était très difficile de s’y faire une place.

Matthieu Delahais Response: Simply because it was the B team. These players were at their limits. They did not have the potential to go higher and claim the France A team, or in a role of substitutes. And then, we must also recognize that the France A team of those years was at a sacred level and that it was very difficult to find a place there.

Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): Dans un article d'Onze-Mondial, Guy Lacombe regrette que ce triomphe soit passé quelque peu inaperçu. Il estimait que l'euphorie suscitée par l'euro monopolisait l'intérêt du public. Êtes-vous d'accord avec lui ?

Soccernostalgia Question: In an article in Onze-Mondial, Guy Lacombe expressed some regret that this triumph went somewhat unnoticed. He felt that the euphoria over the Euros monopolized the public’s interest. Do you agree with him?

Matthieu Delahais Response: J’étais très jeune à l’époque et je n’ai pas trop de souvenirs. Mais il est clair que la victoire des Bleus à l’Euro a dû accaparer les médias, d’autant plus que cette équipe avait encore la possibilité de gagner la coupe du monde deux ans plus tard. Mais j’ai souvenir qu’en fin d’année, dans France Football, on avait parlé d’une année en or pour la France et que le titre olympique avait autant mis en avant que le triomphe de Platini et sa bande à l’Euro.

Matthieu Delahais Response: I was very young at the time and I don't have too many memories. But it is clear that the victory of the Blues at the Euro must have monopolized the media, especially since this team still had the possibility of winning the World Cup two years later. But I remember that at the end of the year, in France Football, we talked about a golden year for France and that the Olympic title had put forward as much as the triumph of Platini and his band at the Euro.

Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): En terminant, comment ce triomphe a-t-il été considéré dans les annales de l'histoire du football français ?

Soccernostalgia Question: In closing, how was this triumph regarded in the annals French Football history?

Matthieu Delahais Response: S’il est sans doute vrai que ce succès olympique n’a pas eu autant de retombées que la victoire à l’Euro, elle compte quand même dans l’histoire de l’équipe de France. En 2013, les u20 français sont devenus champions du monde. La France est devenue à ce moment le premier pays à avoir remporté tous les titres masculins internationaux. Ce titre olympique a donc son importance. De plus, les Français n’ont plus brillé aux Jeux olympiques depuis 1984 (deux participations, pour un quart de finale en 1996 et une élimination au premier tour en 2020). Le succès de 1984 est donc souvent rappelé et une deuxième médaille d’or est espérée, pourquoi pas dans deux ans à Paris. Kylian Mbappé souhaite y participer ce qui montre l’importance de cette compétition.

Matthieu Delahais Response: While it is undoubtedly true that this Olympic success did not have as many repercussions as the victory at the Euro, it still counts in the history of the France team. In 2013, the French u20s became world champions. France then became the first country to have won all international men's titles. This Olympic title is therefore important. In addition, the French have not shone at the Olympic Games since 1984 (two participations, for a quarter-final in 1996 and an elimination in the first round in 2020). The success of 1984 is therefore often recalled and a second gold medal is hoped for, why not in two years in Paris. Kylian Mbappé wants to participate, which shows the importance of this competition.
