Interview conducted in English and Italian:

Soccernostalgia Question: What were the state of the affairs of the National Team in the beginning of 1932/33 with Vittorio Pozzo at the helm?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Pozzo had by now been Sole Commissioner for 3 years and in this period, Italy had won an international cup (1929) and would then place second in the second edition, that of 1932. Notable results for a growing football movement. The championship, then, since it was organized in a single round, continually created players of great talent, not only goalkeepers and defenders, but also elements of full-blown offensive characteristics: Schiavio from Bologna ended the season with 25 goals, followed by Inter’s Meazza with 21. In double figures also Orsi of Juventus (19) and the young Ferrari (Juventus, 17), Piola (Pro Vercelli, 12).

In short, Pozzo had plenty of elements capable of scoring goals and shifting the balance.

In the autumn of 1932 at the FIFA congress in Zurich, it was decided that Italy, which won the competition from Sweden, would organize the next World Cup, that of 1934. There were all the prerequisites for setting up a squadron, it was enough to continue on this road, with Pozzo in command.

Soccernostalgia Question: The first match of the 1932/33 season for the National team was a Dr. Gerö Cup match vs. Czechoslovakia at Prague on October 28th, 1932. Italy suffered its only loss of the season (1-2). This was also Fulvio Bernardini’s last match for Italy. How was this loss viewed?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: As a fairly undeserved defeat. Two penalties against, one of which failed. The first on an alleged foul committed by Bernardini himself, who passed for being a very fair player. The Azzurri lacked the Juventus defensive trio (Combi-Rosetta-Caligaris), replaced by the three from Bologna (Gianni-Monzeglio-Gasperi). Cesarini was also absent. Italy had never won in Prague and so it was this time too, but the negative streak would end sooner or later.

Soccernostalgia Question: Italy’s next match was a friendy on November 27th, against Hungary at Milano. Italy won the match (4-2) with Orsi scoring twice. Pozzo called up for the first time Argentine Oriundis: Luisito Monti and Attilio Demaria. How significant was this decision and how was it viewed at the time?

Quanto fu significativa questa decisione e come fu vista all'epoca?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Two different naturalizations, even though both had come to Italy - their parents' homeland - just a year ago. Monti, a midfielder with a colossal physique, had 16 appearances to his credit for the Argentina national team, with which he had been a finalist at the 1930 World Cup in Montevideo. In 1932 he was already 31 years old and it was thought that he would not last long, also due to his propensity for brawling. He remained in blue until 1936, astounding everyone with his fairness and dedication to work. In training he worked three times as much as the others.

Demaria, on the other hand, a 22-year-old midfielder, had only 3 appearances for the Argentina national team and seemed to have to remain for a long time in the blue team, but he was used little, at least until 1934.

The local press did not comment at all on the decision by Pozzo and the FIGC to naturalize Monti, Demaria and other players: a process was underway to "bring home" talented elements who had Italian origins and the newspapers assumed that the procedures membership were regular, once approved by FIFA.

Soccernostalgia Question: The next match was another friendly match vs. Germany at Bologna on January 1st, 1933. Italy won (3-1) with four Bologna players in the lineup. How did the Press view this win?

L'Italia vinse (3-1) con quattro giocatori del Bologna in formazione. Come ha visto la stampa questa vittoria?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Like a good test, but Germany at the time was one step inferior to Central European squadrons such as Hungary, Austria and Czechoslovakia. It is interesting to note how the attacking trio, lined up for the first time in that way, with Schiavio in the centre, Meazza and Ferrari on the sides, would be the same a year later with the world championship victory in Rome. Almost all the Italian press appreciated Pozzo's tactical change. according to many, the blue game had become faster and more creative. Despite the quick away goal, Italy made a comeback for the Germans, crowning a brilliant and profitable first half. In all there were 24 conclusions in the mirror of the goal defended by Jakob and then by Buchloch.

Soccernostalgia Question: Italy’s following match was on February 12th, 1933, at Brussels. Italy won (3-2) away from home with Meazza scoring twice. Pozzo ended his experimentation with Mario Gianni in goal and gave a debut to Pietro Serantoni (a member of the 1938 World Cup squad). What are your thoughts?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Even without Schiavio and Ferrari, the Azzurri dominated the Belgians. Serantoni was a choice due to the emergency. Pizziolo's performance was praised, but above all that of Monti, who returned to the levels of 1928, when he impressed everyone at the Amsterdam Olympics. Gianni was always in competition with Combi. In the end Pozzo preferred the Juventus player due to his regular performance. Even if they won only in the final, Italy, even though remodeled, dominated their opponents.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): Pur senza Schiavio e Ferrari gli azzurri dominarono i belgi. Serantoni era una scelta dovuta all´emergenza.

Soccernostalgia Question: The next match was part of the Dr. Gerö Cup. Italy faced Switzerland at Geneva on April 2nd, 1933. Italy won this match (3-0). For the first time this season, Pozzo recalled the Juventus defensive trio of goalkeeper Giampiero Combi and defenders Virginio Rosetta and Umberto Caligaris. Was there a reason, they were not selected in the previous matches this season?

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): La partita successiva faceva parte della Dr. Gerö Cup.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response:  Yes, they were injured or in any case not in excellent form, but Pozzo had never lost contact with them, often meeting them in Turin, where Pozzo himself lived. Pozzo clearly had in mind to let them play at the World Cup and didn't care about some criticism from the press.

Soccernostalgia Question: Italy faced Czechoslovakia for the second time in the season as part of the Dr. Gerö Cup. On May 7th, 1933, at Florence, Italy won (2-0). Was this an important win after losing against the same opponent in the beginning of the season?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Very important, because the Azzurri had understood that, at least at home, they had no problems beating the Czechoslovakians, even though their goal was defended by the champion Planicka and in attack there was the dangerous Nejedly, elements of international fame. In Florence it was a memorable day also for the beauty of the new Berta stadium, just built, a jewel of architecture.

Soccernostalgia Question: This season ended with an important high profile friendly vs. England at Rome on May 13th, 1933. The match ended as a (1-1) tie. How was Italy’s performance viewed against top opposition?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: There was talk of a "missed opportunity", because according to the commentators, Italy could have won. Pozzo also complained about Bastin´s suspicious offside position in the action of the equalizer. It's just a pity that the British, who for the first time had a Sole Commissioner - "I am doing for my country what you do for yours" said Herbert Chapman to his friend Pozzo - did not participate in the World Cup. It would have been the perfect ending.

Soccernostalgia Question: In this match vs. England, Raffaele Costantino played for the last time for Italy. What can you say about his International career?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: He was excellent, even if unfortunately without successes at the World Cup, he had talent and imagination. He also scored many goals playing as a winger, but was closed by other talents such as Orsi, Colaussi and Pasinati. In any case, he was the first high-class player from Southern Italy and left an extraordinary memory in his 5 seasons played with the Roma shirt.

Soccernostalgia Question: How important was Luisito Monti’s integration in the Team? Was he the missing link in the Pozzo’s puzzle for 1934?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: It was very important: they called it "double also", because it was as big as a two-door wardrobe. He was a great professional and when he got overweight, he trained with three sweaters on, sweating like an animal. He was physically unsurpassed, but also precise in his header and possessed good technique.

Soccernostalgia Question: In closing, what is your analysis of this season 1932-33 for the National Team?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: The figures speak for themselves: 7 games, 5 wins, 1 draw and only 1 defeat. The Azzurri could start the World Cup as favorites, together with Austria, Hungary and Czechoslovakia. It is no coincidence that 4 nationals with the most international experience. In Rome 34 the absences of England, Uruguay and Argentina had their weight, who showed up with a team of second choices. It remained to prepare physically in the last season (1933-34) and to hope that the Italian championship, demanding and long, did not produce serious injuries that would have limited Vittorio Pozzo's choices.
