The Soccernostalgia Interview-Part 57b (Interview with French Author and Journalist Mr. Bruno Colombari, on France National Team under Henri Michel during the 1986 World Cup)

 

For this interview, I continue with the history of the France National Team under Henri Michel, season by season, with the 1985/86 season.

This Interview is a continuation of the previous interview and deals with the 1986 World Cup.

Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): Dans le Final 22 français, il n'y a pas eu beaucoup de surprises car Henri Michel a fait confiance aux habitués. Papin a peut-être été le choix surprise que personne n'aurait prédit en début de saison. Comment jugez-vous les choix?

Soccernostalgia Question: In France’s Final 22, there not many surprises as Henri Michel kept faith with the regulars. Perhaps Papin was the surprise choice that no one would have predicted at the beginning of the season. How do you regard the choices?

Bruno Colombari Response: (Original Response in French):  Le seul grand absent est évidemment José Touré, blessé avec Nantes en mars et forfait. Jean-François Domergue, proche de Michel Platini et héros de l’Euro 84, n’est pas retenu, au profit de l’ancien Nantais Michel Bibard. Le reste est classique et logique, même si on ne connait pas le niveau réel de Vercruysse, Ferreri ou Xuereb, qui ne seront pas titulaires mais qui pourraient faire la différence en cours de match. Il y a quand même sept trentenaires (dont les deux gardiens remplaçants) et une moyenne d’âge plutôt haute (près de 28 ans), alors que Papin est le plus jeune, à 22 ans et 8 mois.

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation): The only major absentee is obviously José Touré, injured with Nantes in March and forfeited. Jean-François Domergue, close to Michel Platini and hero of Euro 84, is not retained, in favor of the former Nantes player Michel Bibard. The rest is classic and logical, even if we don't know the real level of Vercruysse, Ferreri or Xuereb, who will not start but who could make the difference during the match. There are still seven players in their thirties (including the two substitute goalkeepers) and a rather high average age (nearly 28), while Papin is the youngest, at 22 years and 8 months.

Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): La Coupe du monde de la France au Mexique a débuté le 1er juin 1986 à León contre le Canada. La France a gagné (1-0) avec Papin marquant le vainqueur. Cependant, il a raté tellement d'occasions, remarqua-t-il plus tard en plaisantant dans Onze-Mondial, qu'il aurait pu terminer meilleur buteur de la Coupe du monde ce jour-là. Ce n'était certainement pas le meilleur début pour la Coupe du monde ?

Soccernostalgia Question: France’s World Cup in Mexico started on June 1^st, 1986, at León against Canada. France won (1-0) with Papin scoring the winner. However, he missed so many chances, he later jokingly remarked in Onze-Mondial, that he could have finished as the top goalscorer of the World Cup on that day. This was certainly not the best start to a World Cup?

Bruno Colombari Response: (Original Response in French):  On peut le voir de deux manières différentes. La première, c’est qu’il fallait absolument gagner ce match contre la plus faible équipe du tournoi (en tout cas la moins expérimentée, avec des joueurs qui n’avaient plus de club). Mission accomplie, l’essentiel est fait, et il faut remonter à 1958 pour trouver la trace d’une victoire française pour commencer une Coupe du monde. La deuxième, c’est qu’effectivement la manière est inquiétante, avec un déchet énorme en attaque (Papin n’est pas le seul à rater des occasions franches, même s’il les collectionne) et une fébrilité inexplicable en défense : les Canadiens se créent une belle occasion à la 10e minute, et gagnent les duels au milieu de terrain en fin de première mi-temps. Le but tardif de Papin est un gros soulagement, mais visiblement, l’équipe de France n’est pas encore prête à jouer en altitude, avec des ballons aux trajectoires flottantes. 

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation): You can see it in two different ways. The first is that it was absolutely necessary to win this match against the weakest team in the tournament (in any case the least experienced, with players who no longer had a club). Mission accomplished, the essential is done, and we have to go back to 1958 to find the trace of a French victory to start a World Cup. The second is that the way is indeed worrying, with a huge loss in attack (Papin is not the only one to miss clear chances, even if he collects them) and an inexplicable feverishness in defense: the Canadians create a great chance in the 10th minute, and win the duels in midfield at the end of the first half. Papin's late goal is a big relief, but obviously the French team is not yet ready to play at altitude, with balls with floating trajectories.

Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): La France s'est améliorée lors de son prochain match le 5 juin 1986, à León contre l'Union soviétique (ou devrions-nous dire le Dinamo Kiev). La France a pris du retard sur un impressionnant tir à longue distance de Vasily Rats. Quelques minutes plus tard (le nouveau joueur de Racing Club) Luis Fernandez a égalisé le match (1-1). Ce résultat satisfait les deux parties. Comment avez-vous vécu cette performance ?

Soccernostalgia Question: France improved in its next match on June 5^th, 1986, at León against the Soviet Union (or should we say Dinamo Kiev). France fell behind to an impressive long-range shot from Vasily Rats. Minutes later (the Racing Club bound) Luis Fernandez tied the match (1-1). This result satisfied both sides. How did you view this performance?

Bruno Colombari Response: (Original Response in French): Ce match n’était pas décisif, puisqu’en cas de défaite, la qualification se jouerait contre la Hongrie. Mais pour finir à la première place du groupe, et avoir un tableau plus facile, les Bleus doivent impérativement gagner car l’URSS terminera contre le Canada. Mais le 6-0 des Soviétiques contre la Hongrie fait peur, d’autant qu’en effet cette équipe est quasiment celle de Kiev, qui a impressionné en finale de la C2 contre l’Atlético de Madrid, renforcée par Dasaev, Larionov et Aleinikov.
Ce 1-1 est évidemment une bonne performance avec des Bleus qui jouent bas et cherchent la profondeur, et des Soviétiques dont la défense monte jusqu’au rond central. Platini manque d’un rien d’ouvrir le score sur un coup franc qui tape la barre de Dasaev. Dommage que Michel se trompe dans son coaching en faisant entrer Bellone à la place de Papin, plutôt que Rocheteau, qui sera décisif lors des trois matchs suivants.
L’URSS consolide sa première place qui lui ouvre un tableau plus favorable que celui des Bleus, avec la Belgique, l’Espagne ou le Danemark et l’Argentine ou l’Angleterre. Mais elle coincera dès les huitièmes. Comme quoi, il ne sert à rien de démarrer un tournoi à toute vitesse !
Les Bleus retrouveront l’URSS en octobre au Parc des Princes, et là, malgré une belle opposition, ils seront battus nettement (0-2).

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation): This match was not decisive, since in case of defeat, the qualification would be played against Hungary. But to finish in first place in the group, and have an easier table, the Blues must win because the USSR will finish against Canada. But the Soviets' 6-0 against Hungary is scary, especially since indeed this team is almost that of kyiv, which impressed in the C2 final against Atlético de Madrid, reinforced by Dasaev, Larionov and Aleinikov.

This 1-1 is obviously a good performance with the Blues playing low and looking for depth, and the Soviets whose defense goes up to the central circle. Platini just missed opening the scoring with a free kick that hit Dasaev's bar. Too bad Michel made a mistake in his coaching by bringing in Bellone in place of Papin, rather than Rocheteau, who would be decisive in the next three games.

The USSR consolidates its first place which opens up a more favorable picture for it than that of the Blues, with Belgium, Spain or Denmark and Argentina or England. But it will get stuck in the eighth. Like what, there is no point in starting a tournament at full speed!

The Blues will find the USSR in October at the Parc des Princes, and there, despite a good opposition, they will be beaten clearly (0-2).

La France a gagné (3-0) avec Stopyra, Tigana (marquant son seul but pour la France) et Rocheteau marquant les buts. Avez-vous eu l'impression que la France s'améliorait match après match?

Soccernostalgia Question: France appeared fully in form by the third and last group match on June 9^th, 1986, against Hungary at León. France won (3-0) with Stopyra, Tigana (scoring his only goal for France) and Rocheteau scoring the goals. Did it feel France were improving match by match?

Bruno Colombari Response: (Original Response in French):  Oui, elle montait en puissance, même si la Hongrie était relativement faible et avait explosé en vol contre l’URSS pour son entrée dans la compétition. Un nul aurait suffi pour se qualifier, mais les Bleus avaient besoin d’une victoire nette pour se rassurer après deux matchs où ils avaient manqué d’efficacité en attaque. Il aura fallu une demi-heure pour ouvrir le score, mais après les occasions se multiplient devant la cage hongroise. Et c’est après l’entrée de Rocheteau (à la place de Papin) que la différence est faite, avec une passe décisive pour Tigana et un but sur un contre qui part de Bats, qui arrive sur Platini et qui est terminé par Rocheteau. C’est son dernier but en sélection, mais on ne le sait pas encore.

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation): Yes, it was gaining momentum, even though Hungary were relatively weak and had exploded in flight against the USSR for their entry into the competition. A draw would have been enough to qualify, but the Blues needed a clear victory to reassure themselves after two games where they had lacked efficiency in attack. It took half an hour to open the scoring, but after the opportunities multiply in front of the Hungarian cage. And it's after the entry of Rocheteau (instead of Papin) that the difference is made, with an assist for Tigana and a goal on a counter that starts from Bats, which arrives on Platini and which is finished by Rocheteau . It is his last goal in selection, but we do not know it yet.

Platini affrontait certains de ses coéquipiers de la Juventus. Dès lors, Henri Michel avait décidé de titulariser Rocheteau au lieu de Papin. La France a battu une équipe italienne décevante (2-0) avec les buts de Platini et Stopyra. Que pensez-vous de ce match ?

Soccernostalgia Question: In the Second Round, France faced defending World Cup Champions Italy on June 17^th, 1986, at Mexico City. Platini was facing some of his Juventus teammates. From this point, Henri Michel had decided to start with Rocheteau instead of Papin. France defeated a disappointing Italian side (2-0) with Platini and Stopyra scoring. What are your thoughts on this match?

Bruno Colombari Response: (Original Response in French):  Ce n’est pas un match spectaculaire, mais il a été parfaitement maîtrisé par les Bleus, comme le sera celui contre l’Uruguay en 2018 par exemple. L’Italie a mal joué le coup, mais elle n’avait pas les moyens de faire beaucoup mieux, et les Français ne lui ont laissé aucune chance. Le 2-0 est même flatteur pour les Italiens qui ont vite baissé les bras après le but de Stopyra. Très grand match de Bossis derrière et de Rocheteau devant, qui est à l’origine des deux buts. Effectivement, Papin n’avait pas le niveau à ce moment-là, et le sortir était logique.

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation): It's not a spectacular match, but it was perfectly mastered by the Blues, as will be the one against Uruguay in 2018 for example. Italy played badly, but they couldn't afford to do much better, and the French didn't give them a chance. The 2-0 is even flattering for the Italians who quickly gave up after Stopyra's goal. Very great match of Bossis behind and Rocheteau in front, which is at the origin of the two goals. Indeed, Papin did not have the level at that time, and taking him out made sense.

Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): En quart de finale, la France affronte le Brésil le 21 juin 1986 à Guadalajara. Ce match est devenu un classique de l'histoire de la Coupe du monde. Le Brésil a marqué le premier grâce à Careca avec Platini égalisant avant le mi-temps (son dernier but pour la France). Joel Bats a sauvé le penalty de Zico dans le temps réglementaire et le match s'est terminé par une séance de tirs au but avec Fernandez marquant le penalty décisif. Quels sont vos souvenirs personnels de ce match ?

Soccernostalgia Question: In the quarterfinals, France faced Brazil on June 21^st, 1986, at Guadalajara. This match has become a classic in the history of the World Cup. Brazil took the lead through Careca with Platini tying the match (his last goal for France). Joel Bats saved Zico’s penalty in regulation time and the match ended in a penalty kick shoot-out with Fernandez scoring the decisive penalty. What are your personal memories from this match?

Bruno Colombari Response: (Original Response in French):  Un émerveillement de tous les instants. Autant la demi-finale de Séville avait été très tendue et violente, autant ce match-là a sublimé le jeu des deux équipes, et le score ne dit rien de toutes les occasions qui arrivaient par vagues. Le Brésil s’en est créé plus et aurait sans doute mérité de gagner, mais les Bleus ont été admirables de sang-froid et de talent, et auraient pu l’emporter avant les tirs au but.
Evidemment, ça n’allait pas aussi vite qu’aujourd’hui, et le pressing était beaucoup plus relâché, mais c’était magnifique, sans doute le plus beau match des Bleus que j’ai vu dans ma vie. Il y avait tellement de bons joueurs des deux côtés ! Junior, Socrates et Zico avaient du mal à accélérer, comme Giresse et Platini d’ailleurs, mais Careca, Muller, Josimar, Alemao, c’était du très haut niveau. Et en face, Amoros, Fernandez, Tigana, Rocheteau et Stopyra n’étaient pas mal non plus. Et Bats fait le match de sa vie : on avait l’impression qu’il était imbattable ce jour-là. C’est toute la différence avec 1982 : sans un très bon gardien, impossible d’aller au bout.
Quand ça s’est terminé, je suis sorti dans les rues de ma ville, près de Marseille, avec mon frère qui avait neuf ans et qui était stupéfait de voir les gens klaxonner comme des fous, certains étaient assis sur les toits des voitures, c’était n’importe quoi. On ne reverra ça qu’après le titre de 1998. C’était presque déjà une victoire en Coupe du monde !

 

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation): A constant wonder. As much as Sevilla's semi-final had been very tense and violent, this match sublimated the game of both teams, and the score says nothing of all the chances that came in waves. Brazil created more and would probably have deserved to win, but the Blues were admirable in composure and talent, and could have won before the penalty shootout.

Obviously, it was not going as fast as today, and the pressing was much more relaxed, but it was magnificent, without doubt the best match of the Blues that I have seen in my life. There were so many good players on both sides! Junior, Socrates and Zico had trouble accelerating, like Giresse and Platini for that matter, but Careca, Muller, Josimar, Alemao, it was very high level. And opposite, Amoros, Fernandez, Tigana, Rocheteau and Stopyra were not bad either. And Bats is having the match of his life: we felt like he was unbeatable that day. That's the difference with 1982: without a very good goalkeeper, it's impossible to go all the way.

When it ended, I went out in the streets of my city, near Marseille, with my brother who was nine years old and who was amazed to see people honking their horns like crazy, some were sitting on the roofs of cars, it was nonsense. We will only see that again after the 1998 title. It was almost already a victory in the World Cup!

Bruno Colombari Response: (Original Response in French):  Oui, de toute évidence. C’est un sommet qui est arrivé trop tôt, ça aurait pu être la finale si ces deux équipes ne s’étaient pas retrouvées dans la même partie du tableau. Mais, comme c’est souvent le cas en Coupe du monde, les meilleurs matchs ne sont pas les finales. Evidemment, on espérait très fort après cette qualification que les Bleus iraient au bout, mais ce n’était plus possible.

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation): Yes, obviously. It was a summit that came too soon, it could have been the final if these two teams had not ended up in the same part of the table. But, as is often the case in the World Cup, the best games are not the finals. Obviously, we hoped very much after this qualification that the Blues would go to the end, but it was no longer possible.

 

Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): Ce match était le dernier match de Rocheteau pour la France. Que pouvez-vous dire de sa carrière avec l'équipe nationale de "L'Ange Vert" ?

Soccernostalgia Question: This match was Rocheteau’s last match for France. What can you say about his career with the National Team for ‘L’Ange Vert’?

Bruno Colombari Response: (Original Response in French):  Avec le recul, on voit tout ce qu’il a apporté aux Bleus, alors que ses stats ne sont pas vraiment spectaculaires (49 sélections, 15 buts, 11 passes décisives). S’il est passé à côté de l’Euro 1984, ses trois Coupes du monde sont très bonnes. Son évolution en tant qu’attaquant est aussi intéressante : il a commencé comme avant-centre avant de devenir un pur ailier droit à Saint-Etienne, avec une technique de dribbleur à la George Best (ou Kevin Keegan), puis il est revenu dans l’axe en allant au PSG. En équipe de France, il a su s’adapter à une configuration différente avec Stopyra, et son rôle a été déterminant au Mexique. Il était aussi très élégant sur le terrain, et d’une correction absolue.

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation): Looking back, we see everything he brought to the Blues, while his stats are not really spectacular (49 selections, 15 goals, 11 assists). If he missed Euro 1984, his three World Cups are very good. His evolution as a striker is also interesting: he started as a center forward before becoming a pure right winger at Saint-Etienne, with a dribbler technique à la George Best (or Kevin Keegan), then he returned to the axis by going to PSG. In the France team, he was able to adapt to a different configuration with Stopyra, and his role was decisive in Mexico. He was also very elegant on the pitch, and absolutely correct.

La France était épuisée après le match contre le Brésil et a perdu (0-2) contre une équipe ouest-allemande peu impressionnante. Était-ce l'impression générale ?

Soccernostalgia Question: For the semifinals, France once again faced West Germany (like in 1982), on June 25^th, 1986, at Guadalajara. France were exhausted after the match vs. Brazil and lost (0-2) against an unimpressive West German side. Was this the general impression?

 

Bruno Colombari Response: (Original Response in French):  C’est un match qui s’est aussi joué sur les nerfs, un peu comme la finale de Coupe du monde perdue contre l’Italie en 2006. Les Allemands ne s’attendaient pas à se retrouver là après un parcours médiocre au premier tour et un tableau très favorable en huitièmes et en quarts, mais ils n’avaient aucune pression. Beckenbauer a très bien compris comment prendre les Bleus, en mettant beaucoup d’impact et en jouant les contres à fond. Stopyra a été agressé après dix secondes de jeu par Brehme, comme Henry le sera par Cannavaro en 2006.
Et après, tout part de travers : Bats fait une erreur technique sur le coup franc de Brehme, Bossis tire au-dessus de la cage vide, Platini est dans un mauvais jour, et l’absence de Rocheteau se fait durement sentir. Dommage, car cette RFA-là était moins forte techniquement que celle de 1982, mais elle était plus disciplinée.

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation): It's a game that was also played on the nerves, a bit like the World Cup final lost against Italy in 2006. The Germans did not expect to end up there after a mediocre run in the first round and a very favorable table in the eighths and quarters, but they had no pressure. Beckenbauer understood very well how to take the Blues, putting a lot of impact and playing the counterattacks thoroughly. Stopyra was attacked after ten seconds by Brehme, as Henry will be by Cannavaro in 2006.

And afterwards, everything goes wrong: Bats makes a technical error on Brehme's free kick, Bossis shoots over the empty cage, Platini is having a bad day, and Rocheteau's absence is felt badly. Too bad, because this West Germany was less technically strong than that of 1982, but it was more disciplined.

Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): Alain Giresse a joué pour la dernière fois pour la France dans ce match contre l'Allemagne de l'Ouest. Que pouvez-vous dire de sa carrière avec l'équipe nationale qui a vraiment décollé assez tard dans sa carrière ?

Soccernostalgia Question: Alain Giresse played for the last time for France in this match against West Germany. What can you say about his career with the National Team that really took off rather late in his career?

Bruno Colombari Response: (Original Response in French):  J’en avais déjà parlé quand nous avions évoqué la saison 1976-1977. C’est probablement une erreur de Michel Hidalgo de n’avoir vu en lui qu’un remplaçant de Platini et de ne pas avoir fait appel à lui pour la Coupe du monde en Argentine. Mais il est aussi la preuve qu’on peut se révéler au plus haut niveau international à partir de 30 ans. Il en avait près de 34 au Mexique, et vu les conditions de jeu (chaleur, altitude), c’était clairement trop dur pour lui.

Bruno Colombari Response: (English Translation): I had already spoken about it when we mentioned the 1976-1977 season. It is probably a mistake by Michel Hidalgo to have seen in him only a replacement for Platini and not to have called on him for the World Cup in Argentina. But he is also proof that you can prove yourself at the highest international level from the age of 30. He was almost 34 in Mexico, and given the playing conditions (heat, altitude), it was clearly too hard for him.

 

Soccernostalgia Question: (Original Question in French): Tout comme en 1982, pour le match pour la troisième place face à la Belgique le 28 juin 1986 à Puebla, Henri Michel sélectionne de nombreux joueurs qui n'avaient pas pris part à la Coupe du monde, comme Bibard et Albert Rust disputant son unique match pour la France. La France s'est imposée (4-2) avec de jeunes joueurs comme Ferreri et Papin parmi les buteurs. Tout comme en 1982 contre la Pologne, j'imagine que personne n'avait beaucoup d'intérêt pour ce match ?
