Soccernostalgia Question: What were the state of the affairs of the National Team in the beginning of 1934/35 with Vittorio Pozzo at the helm, armed with the World Cup?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: There was a lot of enthusiasm and naturally the desire to repeat oneself. Italian football was experiencing a dizzying growth in popularity, it was almost reaching the levels of cycling. Furthermore, a new generation of top-level players was ready to relieve some of the new world champions, who were now getting on in years and ready to retire.

Soccernostalgia Question: The first match of the 1934/35 season and Italy’s first as World Cup Champions was against England at London on November 14, 1934. Was this a symbolic match to determine the best team in the world. As many believed England were the strongest Nation in Europe?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Virtually everyone knew that the British were the "masters" of the game. There was a lot of curiosity in challenging them, because they hadn't taken part in the two world championships, but they always considered themselves the strongest. Vittorio Pozzo himself, who spoke English well, given his youthful years as a student in England, was sent by the Italian Federation to London to make arrangements for the match.

Soccernostalgia Question: Italy lost this match (2-3) but it is a match mostly remembered for being violent. Monti was sent off and the match has been dubbed as the ‘Battle of Highbury’. What was the reason for the violence?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: It was a bad foul by Ted Drake. He was not expelled, but forced out for a broken toe. According to Pozzo, Monti was paying for his unjustified reputation as a "beater" and Drake's ugly foul was the result of the prejudices of the English press.

Soccernostalgia Question: As far as the match itself, Italy were down (0-3) within the first 12 minutes. England even missed a penalty by Eric Brook (saved by Ceresoli). The positive aspect for Italy was the fightback with one less man and the two goals by Meazza to reduce the deficit. How was this match reported in Italy?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: The Italian press, despite the defeat, appreciated the stubbornness and desire to fight of the Azzurri who, despite remaining ten, came close to a sensational comeback. Upon returning to Italy, Pozzo's men were hailed as "heroes".

Soccernostalgia Question: Italy’s next match was a friendly match on December 9th, against Hungary at Milano. This was Italy’s first match at home as World Cup Champions. Italy won the match (4-2). How was this comfortable win viewed?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: It wasn't too easy, given that the Hungarians took the lead first and ended the first half in a draw (2-2). Italy, with the same players from Highbury, with the exception of the returning Ferraris in place of Monti, is playing a good level match in terms of grit, but not in terms of technique and teamwork. In particular, the right wing Orsi had many breaks. Pozzo was beginning to understand that, in view of the 1938 World Cup, it was necessary to change much more than 2-3 elements.

Come sono state viste dalla stampa queste sperimentazioni?

Soccernostalgia Question: The next match was another friendly match vs. France at Torino on February 17th, 1935, at Roma. Italy won (2-1) with Meazza scoring again in his third straight match. Pozzo gave debuts to Mascheroni, Pietro Ferraris, Varglien and Scopelli (For Varglien and Scopelli, this would be their only appearances). How were these experimentaions viewed by the Press?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: With great curiosity, but also cautiously given that it was known that some players not present in that match, such as the full-back Allemandi and Monti himself, would soon take back a starting position. Scopelli and Mascheroni had a short life with the blue shirt, also because for different reasons, they left Italy in the following months. Mascheroni for a quarrel and Scopelli because he was afraid of being drafted into the army and sent to war in Africa.

Even those of Varglien and Pietro Ferraris II were temporary solutions.

Pozzo was aware that by now Italy was the team to beat for all the other teams in the world and he knew that every match, even friendly ones, presented difficulties. In any case, the Azzurri played a good match and deservedly won.

Soccernostalgia Question: This match against France was also the last for World Cup Champion Attilio Ferraris. How would you describe his career with the National Team?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: It was a high-level career, but with long breaks due to his slightly too wild life. Pozzo put him back in shape and allowed him to win the 1934 World Cup as a protagonist, but Attilio was already advanced in years and allowed himself too many vices, alcohol and cigarettes. Greased and out of shape, he took part in a meeting of veterans in Montecatini in 1947 and a fatal heart attack killed him at just 47 years of age.

Soccernostalgia Question: Italy’s last match of the season was a friendly against rivals Austria at Vienna. Pozzo handed debuts to Faccio, Corsi and Silvio Piola. Piola took the opportunity by scoring twice. How was this win against Meisl’s squad viewed?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Certainly historic victory, the first in Austria, after 22 years. Pozzo was still betting on Meazza, but the Ambrosiana-Inter star was hurt in the last training session before the match. The decision to deploy Piola in attack was practically obligatory. Pozzo, who had already used him 6 times in the B national team, knew the value of this provincial boy, who grew up in Pro Vercelli and then moved on to Lazio, but didn't want to be in a hurry to avoid "burning" him.

Soccernostalgia Question: Silvio Piola, destined to be one of Italy’s greatest pre-War players, surely grabbed all the headlines with his display. Can you describe him at this stage of his career?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Piola was only 22 at the time of his debut in Vienna, but he had already played in Serie A for 5 years. Slender, athletic, of few words and cold sills, he had exceptional talent. His was a devastating debut: two goals in front of 60,000 opposing spectators. The 2-0 of the Azzurri in Vienna was decisive for the second international cup. A star of world football was born, destined to shine for many years.

Soccernostalgia Question: This match against Austria was also the last for Argentine Oriundis and 1934 World Cup Champions Orsi and Guaita. How would you describe their careers with the National Team and was there a reason for their departures?

Gioco´ comunque ancora fino a 40 anni, prima in Argentina, poi in Brasile e Uruguay, infine lavoro´ come allenatore in Cile.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: For both it was the fear of being drafted and sent to Ethiopia. The 25-year-old Guaita was the protagonist of a sensational escape by car, together with Scopelli and Stagnaro, from Rome to France and then to Spain to return to South America. They were accused of treason and never seen again in Italy. Orsi, who in any case was already 34 years old, decided not to renew the agreement with Juventus and set off again by ship from Genoa. However, he still played until he was 40, first in Argentina, then in Brazil and Uruguay, finally he worked as a coach in Chile.

Soccernostalgia Question: Vittorio Pozzo’s Italy played only four matches this entire season. Was this due to fatigue after the pressures of the World Cup at home, the previous season?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response:  Exactly, Pozzo didn't want to "squeeze" the Azzurri too much, considering the pressures and the busy schedule (the national team, the championship and the Mitropa Cup would soon be joined by the Italian Cup). He aimed only at the international cup, which he won for the second time, after his success in 1933.

Soccernostalgia Question: Within a year, Italy had lost many of its 1934 stars: Combi, Schiavio, Orsi, Guaita, Ferraris. Was Pozzo consciously rebuilding the side?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response:  Yes, Pozzo wanted to give the new recruits time, letting them gain international experience, but without exposing them too much to the criticisms of a press that was by now very demanding and thought that success at the 1938 World Cup was a fait accompli.

Soccernostalgia Question: In closing, what is your analysis of this season 1934-35 for the National Team?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: A short, relaxing season, after the triumph of 1934, but also characterized by the splendid success in Vienna and by the explosive debut of the great Silvio Piola. Winning is difficult, but confirming oneself is even more so: Pozzo, an expert in football, knew it very well and kept away the pitfalls of media pressure.
