For this interview, I continue to look back at Vittorio Pozzo’s era as Italy National Team Manager, with the 1945/46 and 1946/47 Seasons.

This will be a semi-regular and continuous series.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota is a former freelance journalist in Biella (Italy), living in Odense (Denmark) from 2013, working as a language teacher.

 

He is the author of “Danmark (1908-2018)” chronicling the history of the Danish National Team.

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): Nel 1945 e alla fine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, quale era la situazione della Nazionale ancora con Vittorio Pozzo alla guida?

Soccernostalgia Question: By 1945 and the end of the Second World War, what were the state of the affairs of the National Team still with Vittorio Pozzo at the helm?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): L´Italia era un Paese distrutto dai bombardamenti e da 5 anni di conflitto civile e internazionale. Molti collegamenti tra Nord e Sud erano complicati, a causa lo stato di strade e ferrovie, per questo bisognera´ aspettare l´autunno del 1946 per un nuovo campionato nazionale che copra l´intero territorio dello Stivale.

La Nazionale ovviamente ne risentiva, senza contare che l´Italia era un Paese che aveva perso la guerra e con cui pochi altri volevano avere a che fare.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Italy was a country destroyed by bombings and 5 years of civil and international conflict. Many connections between North and South were complicated, due to the state of roads and railways, for this reason it was necessary to wait until the autumn of 1946 for a new national championship that covered the entire territory of the Boot. The National team obviously suffered, without considering that Italy was a country that had lost the war and with which few others wanted to deal.

 

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): Pozzo è stato un po’ fortunato a poter costruire una squadra attorno a un unico club, il “Grande Torino”, la principale potenza del calcio italiano?

Soccernostalgia Question: Was Pozzo somewhat fortunate that he could build a team around a single club, the ‘Grande Torino’, the main power in Italian Calcio?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): No, non e´ stato "fortunato", ma ottimo pianificatore, visto che molti di questi giocatori del Torino li aveva consigliati proprio lui al presidente del Torino, Ferruccio Novo. Erano tutti talenti molto promettenti, come Mazzola, Loik, Ossola, Ballarin, Maroso, Castigliano, Rigamonti, ma in squadre minori, senza blasone: Pozzo voleva che potessero giocare nello stesso club di modo che creassero un blocco. E riusci´ nel suo intento, facendoli acquistare tutti dal Torino nel giro di qualche anno.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response:
No, he was not "lucky", but an excellent planner, since he had recommended many of these Torino players to the president of Torino, Ferruccio Novo. They were all very promising talents, such as Mazzola, Loik, Ossola, Ballarin, Maroso, Castigliano, Rigamonti, but in smaller teams, without a reputation: Pozzo wanted them to be able to play in the same club so that they would create a block. And he succeeded in his intent, having them all purchased by Torino in the space of a few years.

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): Pozzo aveva ancora la piena fiducia della Federazione Italiana?

Soccernostalgia Question: Did Pozzo still have the full confidence of the Italian Federation?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): Non poteva essere diversamente: chi meglio di lui conosceva il livello dei giocatori di tutta la nazione? Certo, Pozzo era un po´ avanti con l´eta´ ma pur sempre il tecnico piu´ qualificato di cui disponeva l´Italia, senza contare che molti club italiano di primo livello si affidavano ad allenatori ungheresi o britannici.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response:  It couldn't have been otherwise: who better than him knew the level of the players of the entire nation? Sure, Pozzo was a little advanced in age but still the most qualified coach that Italy had, without considering that many top-level Italian clubs relied on Hungarian or British coaches.

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): La prima e unica partita della stagione 1945/46 fu quella dell'11 novembre 1945 in casa Zurigo-Svizzera. La partita finì in pareggio (4-4). Pozzo ora stava costruendo la sua squadra attorno ai talenti di Valentino Mazzola ed Ezio Loik. Pozzo sperimenta e consegna gli esordi a Lucidio Sentimenti IV, Aldo Ballarin, Virgilio Maroso, Eusebio Castigliano e Carlo Parola. Come è stato visto dalla stampa questo risultato?

Soccernostalgia Question: The first and only match of the 1945/46 season was at Zürich vs. Switzerland, on November 11, 1945. The match ended as a (4-4) tie. Pozzo was now building his team around the talents of Valentino Mazzola and Ezio Loik. Pozzo experimented and handed debuts to Lucidio Sentimenti IV, Aldo Ballarin, Virgilio Maroso Eusebio Castigliano and Carlo Parola. How was this result viewed by the Press?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): L´Italia sostitui´ all´ultimo momento la Spagna, impossibilitata a partecipare. Pozzo scelse, anche per motivi pratici, solo giocatori di squadre del Nord, quindi vicini geograficamente alla Svizzera. Quasi tutti i giornali esprimettero giudizi positivi, parlando di "pareggio che vale una vittoria". Va anche considerato il limitato tempo di preparazione alla gara.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Italy replaced Spain at the last minute, unable to participate. Pozzo chose, also for practical reasons, only players from teams in the North, therefore geographically close to Switzerland. Almost all the newspapers expressed positive opinions, speaking of "a draw that is worth a victory". The limited time of preparation for the match must also be considered.

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): In questa partita contro la Svizzera furono convocati eroi prebellici come Silvio Piola e Amedeo Biavati. Qual era il loro status a questo punto?

Soccernostalgia Question: In this match against Switzerland, Pre-War heroes like Silvio Piola and Amedeo Biavati were called up. What was their status at this point?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): Pur essendo entrambi due atleti esemplari, erano entrambi sopra i 30 anni (Piola 32) e quindi da molti giudicati in fase calante. Ma ebbero modo di smentire gli scettici: Piola e Biavati smisero infatti di giocare a 41 anni.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response:
Although they were both exemplary athletes, they were both over 30 (Piola 32) and therefore considered by many to be in a declining phase. But they had the opportunity to prove the skeptics wrong: Piola and Biavati stopped playing at 41.

 

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): Sarebbe passato un altro anno per la prossima partita dell’Italia mentre la Nazione si stava ricostruendo. Nella stagione 1946/47, la prima partita dell'Italia fu l'amichevole contro l'Austria a Milano il 1° dicembre 1946, con la vittoria dell'Italia (3-2). Come è stata coperta dalla stampa questa vittoria?

Soccernostalgia Question: It would be another year for Italy’s next match as the Nation was rebuilding. For the 1946/47 season, Italy’s first match was a friendly match against Austria at Milano on December 1, 1946, with Italy winning (3-2). How was this victory covered by the Press?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): Molti elogi, pochissime critiche: i giornali esaltarono il primo tempo sontuoso degli azzurri, lamentando forse un risultato piu´ ampio. Secondo il giornale Stadio bisognava modificare qualcosa in attacco, inserendo alcuni giocatori piu´ giovani, ma era fuori dubbio che Pozzo aveva allestito una volta ancora una buona squadra, molto competitiva, anche se si sarebbero dovuti aspettare ancora 4 anni per una fase finale di un Mondiale.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Much praise, very little criticism: the newspapers praised the Azzurri's sumptuous first half, perhaps lamenting a wider result. According to the newspaper Stadio, something had to be changed in attack, inserting some younger players, but there was no doubt that Pozzo had once again assembled a good team, very competitive, even if they would have to wait another 4 years for a final phase of a World Cup.

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): Giocatori prebellici come il campione della Coppa del Mondo del 1938 Pietro Rava (l'unico giocatore della Nazionale italiana ad essere stato testimone di tutte e quattro le vittorie della Coppa del Mondo dell'Italia) e Teobaldo Depetrini hanno giocato per gli Azzurri per l'ultima volta. La loro carriera è stata interrotta a causa della guerra?

Soccernostalgia Question: Pre-War players such as 1938 World Cup Champion Pietro Rava (the only Italian National Team player to witness all Italy’s Four World Cup victories) and Teobaldo Depetrini played for the Azzurri for the last time. Were their careers curtailed because of the War?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): La guerra aveva sicuramente messo il bastone tra le ruote, facendo saltare loro 2-3 stagioni, ma ebbero comunque entrambi una carriera lunga: Rava smise di giocare a 36 anni e Depetrini a 38.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: The war had certainly put a spoke in their wheels, causing them to skip 2-3 seasons, but they both had long careers anyway: Rava stopped playing at 36 and Depetrini at 38.

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): La partita successiva dell'Italia fu Firenze-Svizzera il 27 aprile 1947. L'Italia vinse (5-2) con una tripletta segnata dal debuttante della nazionale Romeo Menti II. In tutto hanno preso parte nove giocatori del Torino. Come ha visto la stampa questa vittoria e il continuo sviluppo del binomio Mazzola-Loik?

Soccernostalgia Question: Italy’s next match was at Firenze vs. Switzerland on April 27, 1947. Italy won (5-2) with international debutant Romeo Menti II scoring a hat trick. In all nine Torino players took part. How did the Press view this win and continuing development of Mazzola and Loik combination?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): Fu eloquente il titolo del Corriere dello Sport: "Differenza di classe". Trascinata dalla nuova stella, Valentino Mazzola, la squadra italiana aveva letteralmente demolito quella che in quel momento era una delle formazioni meglio allenate d´Europa, non solo perche´ aveva avuto la fortuna di non dover prendere parte alla guerra, visto che la Svizzera si era dichiarata neutrale. Gli uomini di Pozzo erano molto bene allenati al tiro in porta e per questo concludevano a rete con forza e precisione. In particolare proprio Menti, che tra l´altro conosceva bene il campo erboso di Firenze, avendo militato nella Fiorentina. Tra i migliori in campo va citato anche il mediano Castigliano, autentico motore della difesa e stantuffo di centrocampo.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: The title in the Corriere dello Sport was eloquent: "Class Difference". Led by the new star, Valentino Mazzola, the Italian team had literally demolished what was at that time one of the best trained teams in Europe, not only because they had been lucky enough not to have to take part in the war, given that Switzerland had declared itself neutral. Pozzo's men were very well trained in shooting on goal and for this reason they concluded with power and precision. In particular, Menti, who among other things knew the grassy pitch of Florence well, having played for Fiorentina. Among the best on the pitch, we must also mention the midfielder Castigliano, the true engine of the defence and piston of the midfield.

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): C'era un clamore da parte della stampa per selezionare i giocatori del Torino in blocco mentre la squadra dominava il panorama del Calcio?

Soccernostalgia Question: Was there a press clamor to select Torino players en bloc as the team was dominating the Calcio landscape?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): Clamore no, perche´ il Torino aveva comunque vinto il titolo nazionale nel 1943 e nel 1946, oltre alla Coppa Italia 1942-43, quindi era indubbiamente la miglior squadra italiana del momento.

In quel match con la Svizzera fu euguagliato il record di Italia-Belgio 1913, quando gli azzurri schierarono ben 9 elementi della Pro Vercelli, allora massima espressione del calcio italiano, ma fu una scelta logica.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: No sensation, because Torino had won the national title in 1943 and 1946, as well as the 1942-43 Italian Cup, so it was undoubtedly the best Italian team at the time. In that match with Switzerland, the record of Italy-Belgium 1913 was equaled, when the Azzurri fielded 9 players from Pro Vercelli, then the maximum expression of Italian football, but it was a logical choice.

 

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): La successiva e ultima partita dell'Italia della stagione 1946/47 fu un'amichevole in casa del Torino contro l'Ungheria l'11 maggio 1947. L'Italia vinse (3-2) con dieci giocatori del Torino insieme al portiere della Juventus Lucidio Sentimenti IV. Mario Rigamonti del Torino ha fatto il suo debutto in nazionale. Come è stata vista questa vittoria contro una squadra che includeva un giovane Ferenc Puskas?

Soccernostalgia Question: Italy’s next and last match of the 1946/47 season was a friendly at Torino against Hungary on May 11, 1947. Italy won (3-2) with ten Torino players along with Juventus goalkeeper Lucidio Sentimenti IV. Torino’s Mario Rigamonti made his international debut. How was this victory viewed against a team that included a young Ferenc Puskas?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): Pozzo fu abbastanza autocritico nel commento finale sulle colonne del suo giornale ("La Stampa"): disse che l´Italia non aveva giocato bene come nelle due gare precedenti, anche se di fronte aveva un avversario migliore. Ammise anche che la tattica del fuorigico sistematico, applicata dagli ungheresi aveva messo in difficolta´ i suoi uomini, impediti a mettere in pratica le contromisure studiate in allenamento.

Il fatto che in campo ci fossero ben 10 giocatori del Torino, va ripetuto: i granata erano la miglior squadra del momento ed erano in corso con un ciclo vincente simile a quello dela Juventus 1930-35. La mancanza di Parola (della Juventus), infortunato, obbligo´ Pozzo a chiamare un altro giocatore del Torino, Rigamonti appunto, che alla fine fu tra i migliori.

Puskas, pur essendo molto giovane (20 anni) era gia´ un giocatore esperto a livello internazionale, essendo alla settima presenza in Nazionale. I giornalisti italiani rimasero impressionati dalla sua classe. In un´intervista a fine gara Puskas confesso´ la sua frustrazione per aver perso la gara proprio negli ultimissimi minuti, in occasione della rete di Loik.

 

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Pozzo was quite self-critical in his final commentary in the columns of his newspaper ("La Stampa"): he said that Italy had not played as well as in the two previous games, even though they faced a better opponent. He also admitted that the systematic offside tactic, applied by the Hungarians, had put his men in difficulty, preventing them from putting into practice the countermeasures studied in training.

The fact that there were 10 Torino players on the pitch, must be repeated: the Granata were the best team at the time and were on a winning cycle similar to that of Juventus 1930-35. The absence of Parola (of Juventus), injured, forced Pozzo to call another Torino player, Rigamonti, who in the end was among the best.

Puskas, despite being very young (20 years old) was already an experienced player at international level, being at his seventh appearance for the national team. Italian journalists were impressed by his class. In an interview after the match, Puskas confessed his frustration at having lost the match in the very last minutes, when Loik scored.

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): In questa partita contro la Spagna, un altro campione della Coppa del Mondo del 1938, Pietro Ferraris II, giocò per l'ultima volta per l'Italia. Come è stata considerata la sua carriera in azzurro?

Soccernostalgia Question: In this match against Spain, another 1938 World Cup Champion, Pietro Ferraris II played for the last time for Italy. How was his career with the Azzurri regarded?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): Un finale di carriera piu´ che dignitoso il suo, a 34 anni e con la fascia di capitano. Ferraris II forse fu penalizzato dalla pausa bellica piu´ del dovuto. Ai Mondiali del 1938 colleziono´ solo una presenza, con la Norvegia, ma nel 1942 sarebbe stato titolare, se i Mondiali si fossero svolti. Dopo il calcio, fu proprietario di un piccolo hotel nella sua citta´ di origine, Vercelli.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: A more than dignified end to his career, at 34 years old and with the captain's armband. Ferraris II was perhaps penalized by the war break more than he should have been. At the 1938 World Cup he collected only one appearance, with Norway, but in 1942 he would have been a starter, had the World Cup taken place. After football, he owned a small hotel in his hometown, Vercelli.

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): Alla fine di questa stagione, c'era la sensazione che Pozzo avesse ricostruito un'altra squadra forte per il futuro?

Soccernostalgia Question: At the end of this season, was there a feeling that Pozzo had rebuilt another strong side for the future?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): Certo: Piola e Ferraris II avevano altri giovani rampanti pronti a sostituirli, come Gabetto e Ossola. Il calcio italiano stava di nuovo fornendo una buona generazione di talenti, ma dal 1947 al 1950 tante cose sarebbero dovute ancora succedere, non un nuovo conflitto, come vedremo, ma una sfortunatissima tragedia che decise per molti anni le sorti del Torino e della Nazionale.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Of course: Piola and Ferraris II had other young up-and-coming players ready to replace them, like Gabetto and Ossola. Italian football was again providing a good generation of talent, but from 1947 to 1950 many things were still to happen, not a new conflict, as we will see, but a very unfortunate tragedy that decided the fate of Torino and the National team for many years.

 

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): Com’era l’interesse del pubblico in questi anni dell’immediato dopoguerra rispetto agli anni prebellici?

Soccernostalgia Question: How was the interest of the public in these immediate post-war years compared to the pre-war years?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): Un interesse fortissimo: finita la paura della guerra, delle riunioni di massa, c´era tanta voglia di uscire a divertirsi, a godersi le manifestazioni sportive, soprattutto ciclismo e calcio. 50 mila spettatori a Firenze e 65 mila a Torino parlano chiaro. Si era sulla via della rinascita e del ritorno alla normalita´. Una gara della nazionale era un evento straordinario: pallone fatto cadere da un aereo a Torino; tante belle corografie, come a Firenze, con la sfilata pre-gara in costumi rinascimentali, per sottolineare il parallelo tra calcio fiorentino e football moderno. Due ottimi spettacoli.

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: A very strong interest: once the fear of war and mass gatherings was over, there was a great desire to go out and have fun, to enjoy sporting events, especially cycling and football. 50 thousand spectators in Florence and 65 thousand in Turin speak clearly. They were on the road to rebirth and a return to normality. A national team match was an extraordinary event: a ball dropped from a plane in Turin; many beautiful choreographies, like in Florence, with the pre-match parade in Renaissance costumes, to underline the parallel between Florentine football and modern football. Two excellent shows.

Soccernostalgia Question (In Italian): In chiusura, qual era lo stato della Nazionale al termine della stagione 1946/47 e il ruolo e lo status di Pozzo?

Soccernostalgia Question: In closing, what was the state of the National Team at the end of the 1946/47 season and Pozzo’s role and status?

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response (In Italian): Pozzo aveva di nuovo in mano le redini azzurre e una panoramica completa del calcio italiano. Ci sarebbe stato, secondo molti, spazio per nuovi successi internazionali, ma un tragico episodio del destino, tarpo´ le ali al calcio italiano. Superga era in agguato…

Mr. Davide Eskelund Rota’s response: Pozzo had the blue reins in his hands again and a complete overview of Italian football. There would have been, according to many, room for new international successes, but a tragic episode of fate clipped the wings of Italian football. Superga was lurking…
