Notes:
-Match number 460 for France and number 306 for USSR.
-France employed a 4-3-3 formation, with Jeannol as Libero, Tigana and Fernandez as defensive midfielders and Ferreri on the right wing.
-France’s Paris Saint-Germain contingent consisting of Bats, Ayache, Jeannol and unused substitute Poullain , as well as Racing Paris’ Fernandez were all playing in their club’s home stadium.
-Soviet managaer Lobanovsky was concurrently the manager of Dinamo Kiev as well.
-France players Battiston, Le Roux and Genghini were all unavailable. The Soviet Yarmechuk missed this match through injury.
-France’s Platini was the only foreign based player on either side.
-This was USSR’s first away win in France since 1967.
-This was France’s first home loss in an official qualifying match since losing 0-2 to Hungary in a European Championship qualifier in Colombes on October 9, 1971.
-Soviet Manager Valeri Vasilevich Lobanovsky (born January 6, 1939) passed away on May 13, 2002.
-France was severely weakened and in rebuilding phase following the retirement from the national team of many of its senior players, such as Alain Giresse, Maxime Bossis and Dominique Rocheteau.
Not to mention, the impending retirements of Platini, Battiston and Tigana, who all retired from the national team within a year.
Though Battiston and Tigana were temporarily recalled in 1988-89 when Platini became the national team manager.

-USSR qualified from this European Championship qualifying group.
-The last match between the two nations was a 1-1 tie on June 5, 1986 during the Mexico 1986 World Cup.
France players: Bats, Amoros, Ayache, Fernandez , Platini, Vercruysse, Tigana, Papin, Bellone and Stopyra and USSR players: Dassayev, Bessonov, Demianenko, Yakovenko, Rodionov, Zavarov, Blokhin, Kuznetsov, Belanov, Aleinikov and Rats were the players still remaining from that match.
Both managers also were present in this match.
Rats also scored and was booked in both matches.
Luis Fernnadez scored France’s goal.
-Luis Fernandez had up to this point scored two goals for France and both were vs. USSR. The first one in March 23,1 983 (1-1 tie) and the second in the World Cup match mentioned above.

-USSR’s previous victory over France was a 1-0 win on May 23, 1980 in Moscow.
France players: Platini and Tigana and USSR players: Dassayev, Bessonov, Chivadze and Khidiatullin were the only players still remaining from that match.
-France’s previous victory over USSR was a 1-0 win in a World Cup Qualifier in Paris on October 13, 1972.
France manager Henri Michel played in that match.
The only remaning player from that match was Soviet player Oleg Blokhin.
-The next match between the two nations as well as the last (due to the break up of the Soviet Union) would be the return leg on September 9, 1987 in Moscow.
The match ended as a 1-1 tie. By that point France had effectively no hope of qualifying and were using that match as a preparatory match for the upcoming World cup qualifiers.
France players: Bats, Ayache, Boli, Amoros, Fernandez, Stopyra , Papin, Poullain and Martini and USSR players: Dassayev, Kuznetsov, Rats, Belanov, Yakovenko, Aleinikov and Khidiatullin were the only players still remaining from that match.

-This was French player Phillipe Jeannol’s one and last cap. He was a member of the 1984 Olympic title winning team coached by Henri Michel.
-France’s Jean Tigana started this match with his fetish number 14 jersey, though later he would be refused such a request by UEFA and FIFA. As they required non-tournamnt matches’ starting jerseys to be from 1 to 11.
-Four past, present and future Euroepan player of the year winners took part in this match.
France’s Platini was the current France Football Magazine’s Ballon D’Or (European player of the year). The soviet Igor Belanov would be awarded the trophy that year.
Soviet player Oleg Blokhin was the winner in 1975.
French player papin would win the award in 1991.

-Platini eventually became the national team manger of France. Fernandez managed Israel.
Lobanovsky also managed Ukraine, as did (does) Blokhin.
Lobanovsky managed Gulf countries UAE and Kuwait.
Chivadze managed national team of Georgia.
French manager Henri Michel also managed many other nations, such as Cameroon, Morocco, UAE, Tunisia and Ivory Coast.
-This loss early in the qualifying campaign, as well as the comprehensive domination of the soviet team during the match signaled the end of the Platini generation.
France would not qualify for this tournament nor the next World Cup.
-After this match, Platini stated that qualification for the Euros is effectively over and France must concentrate on preparing younger players for the World Cup Qualifiers.
-France had not won a match since the win against Belgium on June 28, 1986. They would not win until April 29, 1987 vs. Iceland (Platini’s final match for France).
-The soviet starting lineup consisted of 7 Dinamo Kiev players.
-Soviets Zavarov and Aleinikov and French captain Platini were present and future Juventus players.
-Soviet players Khidiatullin, Zavarov and Yakovenko joined french clubs later in their careers. They played for Toulouse, Nancy and Sochaux respectively.
-It is to be noted that USSR caps are the recognized numbers prior to April 3, 1991. On that date the Soviet Federatuion decided to recognize certain matches by the Olynmpic team as Internationals. Therefore, the numbers may vary from source to source.
