-Spain has sacked National Team Manager Julen Lopetegui just two days before their World Cup opening match vs. Portugal. Lopetegui was set to replace Zinedine Zidane at Real Madrid at the end of the World Cup. The Spanish Federation fired him because the negotiations had occurred without their knowledge. Fernando Hierro will take over as Manager. Hierro (the then Sporting Director) had urged the Federation not to sack Lopetegui. The firing saved Real Madrid from paying Lopetegui’s buy-out clause. -Former England Manager Sam Allardyce is ‘extremely jealous’ that Southgate is leading England at the World Cup and wishes he was still inc charge. (Source Reuters UK Online)

-Former German International Stefan Effenberg stated that the German Federation should expell Mesut Ozil and Ilkay Gundogan following the controversy surrounding their photographs with Turkish President Recep Erdogan. He linked it to his own misadventure in 1994, when he was sent home after giving the middle finger to German fans who were booing him. He mentioned that himself and Uli Stein (in 1986) had been treated more severely by the authorities.
