19 year-old Emannue Petit made his International debut for France in a scoreless tie with Poland. Defending World Cup Champions West Germany with new Manager Berti Vogts played their first match since the title in a friendly vs. Portugal.
Austria’s Bruno Pezzey played in a farewell match in Austria’s loss vs. Switzerland. He played the first 42 minutes.
Nils Andersson managed in interim basis Sweden for their fisrt match since the World Cup.
Milan Macala made his national team debut as Czechoslovakia Manager in their tie vs. Finland.
USSR’s Dimtry Byshovets and Romania’s Gheorghe Constantin made their management debuts for their respective National Teams in their friendly in Moscow.
On August 26th, Holland's Franck Rijkaard announced his international retirement.
On August 26th, former manager Rinus Michels appointed himself as manager of Holland as suitable replacements could not be found.
