Soccernostalgia Question: When the 1981/82 season started, the 1982 World Cup qualifiers were at the halfway stage with Yugoslavia in a good position to accompany Italy to the Finals. What was the atmosphere in this early season with the National Team?

Mihajlo Todic Response in English:  The qualifiers were full of mistrust. The media were restrained, but the public, the fans, remembered what happened before the WC1974 and at that competition. Italy was considered the favorite to win the first place, and Yugoslavia had to fight for the second place with Denmark and Greece, which was below the part for football Yugoslavia. There was a belief that Denmark and Greece were not football-worthy Yugoslavia. Personally, I did not understand such an attitude towards Denmark. Danish clubs were not successful, but that is why the national team had many famous football players. In relation to Greece, I think there were political reasons. Yugoslavia as a state has never had such a friendly attitude towards Greece as the people of Serbia had. Greeks and Serbs have always been great friends. Yugoslavia and Greece had a political problem with Macedonia. Today it is Northern Macedonia. Fans have always suspected that the match of the semifinals of the European cup 1971 Panathinaikos – Crvena zvezda (3: 0) was sold for television.  Allegedly, the Red Star players received "Panasonic" TVs as gifts in order to let Panathinaikos win and place in the European Cup final. The story is not true, but it is a good excuse for a convincing defeat. The media have always hinted that Yugoslavia is a great football power. The fans were convinced of that, but there were no good results for a long time. Judges often helped the opponent, as in the final of the European Cup of Nations in 1968. The public opinion was that they did not like Yugoslavia as a socialist country. That is why before every away game in the qualifications for the WC82, there was a suspicion that something would happen and that Yugoslavia would not record a good result. The selector and the players were under a lot of pressure.

Mihajlo Todic Response in Serbian, in Cyrillic:

Soccernostalgia Question: Milan Miljanic had seemingly settled on a backbone of a team built around Petrovic, Slivjo and Surjak. In his mind was the team already settled ahead of the World Cup?

Mihajlo Todic Response in English: Miljanić worked very well.  Miljanić chose a good moment to return to the Yugoslav national team. He had a good group of older players and talented young players. I have already talked about this interesting fact. During 1980 and 1981, 40 football players played for the Yugoslav national team. In the match against Uruguay, on March 22, 1980 in Sarajevo, the players had an average of eight matches for the national team. At the end of the qualifiers, that number was increased to 25. During the qualifiers, a strong team was formed, with several standard players. Goalkeeper Ilija Pantelić, Velimir Zajec, Vladimir Petrović and Ivica Šurjak were four captains. Vladimir Petrović was the best player of the Crvena zvezda (Red Star) at that time. He was chosen as the "third Zvezda star", which is the biggest recognition of the club. He was at the peak of his career. Ivica Šurjak always played better for Hajduk from Split than for the national team. I think the problem was that he had to replace Dragan Dzajić on the left wing. He did not succeed in that. It is similar with Šljivo. He worked a lot on the field, the coaches loved him, but he was not attractive enough to the fans. Safet Sušić quickly took the place of Šljiva.

Mihajlo Todic Response in Serbian, in Cyrillic:

Soccernostalgia Question: For the first match and World Cup qualifier of the season on September 9, 1981, Yugoslavia came away with a key away win at Denmark (1-2). Let’s remember Denmark had defeated Italy (3-1) in June. Did this more or less end Denmark’s threat and pave the way to qualify?

Mihajlo Todic Response in English: The victory against Denmark is still considered one of the most important in the history of Yugoslav football. Since Yugoslavia is gone, we consider it one of the most important in the history of Serbian football. The reason is more the goal scored by Vladimir Petrović. He ran halfway across the field and passed the Danish goalkeeper and scored. That goal has long been in the opening credits of sports shows. Before the game, the pressure on the players was great. Denmark started the qualifications with three consecutive lost games, but six days earlier they beat Italy and thus became a competitor for the World Cup. Yugoslavia played great in Copenhagen. The 2: 1 victory enabled Yugoslavia to gain four points more than Denmark (then the victory brought two points), and there are only three games left until the end of the qualifications, against Italy, Luxembourg and Greece.

Mihajlo Todic Response in Serbian, in Cyrillic:

Soccernostalgia Question:
For their next qualifier on October 17, 1981, Yugoslavia hosted Italy at Belgrade. the match ended as a diplomatic (1-1) tie that satisfied both sides. In the end, Yugoslavia only dropped points in its matches vs. Italy. How do you assess this performance?

Mihajlo Todic Response in English: I believe, and I have a good reason for that, that the match against Italy was a friendly match. I talked to several players and they all suggested that it was played so that the game ended in a draw. It was a result that suited both Yugoslavia and Italy. The two best national teams from the group went to the WC82. Italy has two more easy matches left against Greece and Luxembourg, both in Italy. Italy should have won the first place in the group, and Yugoslavia the second. It happened that on November 14, 1981, Italy played a draw against Greece in Turin. This suddenly enabled Yugoslavia to win first place in the group with two victories against Luxembourg (5: 0) and Greece (2: 1). Due to the circumstances, Yugoslavia won the first place in the group. Football in Italy was in a great crisis. I believe you know what happened during the 1980 European Championships and what the consequences were of the affair over the rigging of results. I remind you that Paolo Rossi did not play for Italy in the World Cup qualifiers. You remember he was in jail.

Mihajlo Todic Response in Serbian, in Cyrillic:

Soccernostalgia Question: In November within days, Yugoslavia had two comfortable qualifiers, on November 21st, Luxembourg was defeated (5-0) at Novi Sad. Eight days later, Yugoslavia traveled to Greece and defeated the home team (2-1). How did the press view these wins, business as usual?

Mihajlo Todic Response in English:  In the former Yugoslavia, the press was moderate. The victories against Luxembourg and Greece were marked as something that was done according to plan. There were no big analyzes and comments at that time, like today. The report from the match was all that could be read and a few statements from the coaches and players. The next day, everything was put to an end. These were matches in which victories were expected. Coach Miljan Miljanic used the matches against Luxembourg and Greece to check some of the players.

Mihajlo Todic Response in Serbian, in Cyrillic:

Soccernostalgia Question: Yugoslavia qualified for the World Cup by winning a Group containing future Champions Italy and a rising Danish side. After such impressive displays, were there expectations in the Press for the World Cup?

Mihajlo Todic Response in English: Winning the first place is a great success. Yugoslavia has been in crisis in recent years. The national team did not play in the 1978 World Cup and the 1980 European Championships. The placement in the 1982 World Cup caused euphoria. Suddenly, the trust in the national team became great. Fans believed that Yugoslavia could win the World Cup. The placement in the semifinals was the least that was expected. The press praised our football players, individuals were declared the best in Europe.

I told you about the situation in Yugoslavia as a state at that time. The success of the national team helped the people of Yugoslavia to forget the financial and political crisis. Perhaps that is why it was deliberately neglected that Yugoslavia used the moment of the great crisis in Italian football. Success has not been realistically assessed in Yugoslavia. Winning the first place ahead of Italy was emphasized as a great progress of the national team.

Mihajlo Todic Response in Serbian, in Cyrillic:

Soccernostalgia Question: Can you explain the decision why Yugoslavia played no friendlies ahead of the World Cup? (For more than six months, the team played no matches)

Mihajlo Todic Response in English: I talked to several players on this topic and they all said that it was exclusively the decision of coach Miljanic. Miljanic always assessed the situation well. By winning the first place in the group, Yugoslavia changed the atmosphere that prevailed before the start of the qualifications. Playing friendly matches could bring a lot of problems. If Yugoslavia lost a friendly match, the media would immediately express distrust of the player's choice. At that time, it was considered that the current form of the players was a good reason for being selected for the national team. Another reason why friendly matches have not been played is the choice of opponents. Yugoslavia could play against a small number of national teams. Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Turkey, maybe Czechoslovakia ... Miljanic thought that matches against strong national teams would show better what the Yugoslav team is like, but that carried the risk of defeat and the problems I talked about. Only the show match against the selection of journalists was played. These were very popular matches. The A national team played against players chosen by journalists. This turned into a match of the A team against the B team of Yugoslavia. "Journalist" won with the result 2: 1 and, of course, coach Miljanic and the players of the A team were criticized.

Mihajlo Todic Response in Serbian, in Cyrillic:

Soccernostalgia Question: Looking at the Final 22 for the World Cup, were there players that you feel were omitted?

Mihajlo Todic Response in English: There was a saying that "Yugoslavia has 22 million selectors". There were so many inhabitants in Yugoslavia. There were always players who could play for the national team. For example, Dušan Savić is in the 1981/82 season. scored 16 goals for the Red Star, but was not invited to the WC82. Stjepan Deverić was invited. He was 20 years old, he played for Dinamo Zagreb and went to the WC82 as a debutant, he did not play a single game for the national team. Zvonko Živkovic, Partizan's center forward, was also on the list of players without playing a game for the A national team. Jurica Jerković (32 years old) was on the list of players, he played for Zurich, and Marko Mlinarić, one of the best Dinamo players who won the Yugoslav championship, was not invited.

Coach Miljanic had to make a national team according to political criteria. The team consisted of 10 Serbs, 9 Croats and 3 Muslims. Believe me, that was very important. Yugoslavia was a country of "brotherhood and unity", but borders have always existed. Rivalry between clubs from Belgrade, Zagreb, Split, Sarajevo, Rijeka, Mostar has always had national rivalries in the background. Coach Miljanić has always been a Yugoslav, but he was also a very practical man. He knew whose "advice" he had to obey.

Mihajlo Todic Response in Serbian, in Cyrillic:

Soccernostalgia Question:
Yugoslavia’s first match in the World Cup ended as a scoreless tie vs. Northern Ireland. Normally, Yugoslavia would have been favored to win this match. How was their performance viewed?

Mihajlo Todic Response in English: The draw against the "amateurs" from Northern Ireland was assessed as a catastrophe. I emphasized "amateur". In Yugoslavia, the Northern Ireland national team was considered bad because most of the players play in England. No one had any idea that players from Northern Ireland are not foreigners in English clubs. Opinion on Northern Ireland was based on the quality of the clubs. Pet Jennings, the Arsenal goalkeeper at the time, was an "Englishman" for us. No one has heard of Martin O'Neill and Norman Whiteside. It was thought that Northern Ireland would play "English style", the so-called "long balls". After the game, it was estimated that coach Miljanić made a mistake in choosing the players and tactics. Yugoslavia played with only one striker, Zlatko Vujović, who could not play against tall and strong Irish. It was also unusual that coach Miljanić did not make any substitutions.

The result of the match in Zaragoza is a consequence of everything that happened before the departure of the national team to Spain. This is the famous "shoes" scandal for us. The players left dissatisfied for the World Cup. Before the World Cup, the Yugoslav national team signed personal contracts with footwear manufacturers. Most of the players had a contract with the company "Puma". The contracts were great. The players told me that they could buy cars or an apartment from the footwear contract.

The problem arose when the Football Association of Yugoslavia (FSJ) demanded that players wear only "Adidas" shoes. The FSJ had a contract to wear Adidas equipment, and players could choose their own shoes. Before WCP82, the players were told that they had to play in "Adidas" shoes. That is why all the players who had a contract with the company "Puma" were left without lucrative contracts and a lot of money. This caused great dissatisfaction of the players and many went to the World Cup in a bad mood. The match against Northern Ireland is a consequence of the bad atmosphere in the team.

Mihajlo Todic Response in Serbian, in Cyrillic:

Soccernostalgia Question: The next match vs. World Cup hosts Spain has gone down in History for the refereeing decision favoritism shown by the Referee regarding the penalty kick. The Referee allowed Spain to retake their missed penalty kick after he had adjudged Pantelic to have moved before the kick. This certainly made caused an uproar with neutral fans, but how was it covered in Yugoslavia?

Mihajlo Todic Response in English: The match against Spain is remembered by the referee Sorensen from Denmark. The name of the Danish referee has become synonymous with the word "injustice". Every referee who judged badly or made unjust decisions was written to "judge like Sorensen".

The penalty that Sorensen awarded for Spain today could not be awarded. VAR would have shown that Velimir Zajec was standing about a meter outside the penalty area when Alonso passed by him, ran into the penalty area and fell. Even then, it was obvious on the television recording that the violation did not exist.

The decision of the bad referee Sorensen to repeat the penalty that the Spaniard did not use for the goal was a good one. Goalkeeper Pantelić came out almost to the line five meters before the shot. That only convinced us that Sorensen wants to help Spain in every way.

Here's another interesting thing. At the EURO2020 Championship, the referee damaged Denmark in the match against England. He awarded a penalty for England, the Serbian media assessed the injustice towards Denmark as "debt repayment" for Sorensen's decision to award a penalty against Yugoslavia. It has been 40 years, and Sorensen is still synonymous with injustice.

Mihajlo Todic Response in Serbian, in Cyrillic:

Soccernostalgia Question: Irrespective of the penalty decision, how was Yugoslavia’s general performance vs. Spain?

Mihajlo Todic Response in English: Yugoslavia played great against Spain. Gudelj scored in the 10th minute for 1:0. Maybe the result at half time would have been better if the referee had not invented a penalty for Spain.

Referee Sorensen was not the only problem at the match in Valencia. At the halftime of the match, the Yugoslav players could not enter the locker room. Yugoslavia's locker room was full of smoke. Smoke was released through the ventilation and the players could not enter the locker room and wash water, towels, new jerseys. The players stayed in the hallway, physiotherapist Randjelović and doctors of national team massaged the players on the floor of the hallway, the players rested on the steps. It was clear to the players then that Spain would do everything to win. Spain played a draw in the first game of the WC82 against Honduras (1: 1). Spain needed a victory against Yugoslavia, otherwise it would have dropped out of the competition. Yugoslavia had to lose that game.

Mihajlo Todic Response in Serbian, in Cyrillic:

Soccernostalgia Question: Yugoslavia concluded its World Cup with a win over Honduras, with a late penalty kick. Despite the win, Yugoslavia were eliminated and ended the World Cup in a disappointing fashion. What were the root causes of this failure in your opinion?

Mihajlo Todic Response in English: For the affair, I told you about the problem of assembling a team on a national basis, the "boots" affair and the events in the game against Spain. The last reason for the failure is the belief that Spain and Northern Ireland set the result of the last match. Northern Ireland beat Spain 1-0 in the last match of the group. That was the result that led both national teams to the second phase.

Maybe the result of the match was really agreed, but the bad game of Yugoslavia against Honduras also helped. The victory with Vladimir Petrović's goal from the penalty spot in the 88th minute was assessed as a "national shame". An expected victory of at least 5: 0. No one in Yugoslavia paid attention to the fact that Honduras played a draw with Spain (1: 1) and Northern Ireland (1: 1) and that with the victory against Yugoslavia, they could have qualified for the second phase of the competition. The match against Honduras was supposed to be a stronger training. The opponent is much underestimated.

Yugoslavia played really well against Honduras, but the ball "did not want in goal". Honduras also played well, he could have won.

In addition, Yugoslavia needed a 2-0 victory, and Spain and Northern Ireland would have to play a different game.

Mihajlo Todic Response in Serbian, in Cyrillic:

Soccernostalgia Question:
The likes of Halilhodzic, Surjak and Slivjo failed to shine in the only World Cup of their career. How do you assess the individual performances of some of the key players in the World Cup?

Mihajlo Todic Response in English: Vladimir Petrović and Ivan Gudelj played best at WC82.

At that time, Petrović was the best player in Yugoslavia. He was supposed to move from Crvena Zvezda to Arsenal in January 1982, but he did not get permission to go abroad before he turned 28. He missed six months, he was 27.5 years old. He signed a contract with Arsenal in December 1982.

Ivan Gudelj was the new star of Yugoslavia. A leader of the new generation. He was only 22 years old and was among the best players in the First League of Yugoslavia.

Ivica Šurjak, Edin Šljivo and Vahid Halilhodžić have always been good in clubs, but they have never played at such a good level in the national team. At WC82, they once again showed that there is a problem when they play for the national team. Maybe because of the tactics, everyone in the clubs played much better.

Mihajlo Todic Response in Serbian, in Cyrillic:

Soccernostalgia Question: In closingdo you feel Yugoslavia had reached the end of a cycle and new players were needed and was that Miljanics view who also left?

Mihajlo Todic Response in English: The WC82 concluded a cycle of almost four years during which the Yugoslav national team made great progress. Club football has also made great progress. The most important thing is that the way of working has changed. Clubs have dedicated much more work to young players in their academies. There were a lot of great coaches in the clubs. Unfortunately, Miljanić left due to a bad result at the WC82. He had to leave under pressure from the public and the media. He left a good team and a large group of good players. Yugoslavia qualified for EURO1984, although it is another and equally exciting story.

Mihajlo Todic Response in Serbian, in Cyrillic:  Првенство света 1982.
